Carlton is a big club and GC are the AFLs lovechild. We are nobodies.
Not anymore and havnt been for a while.
They have lost their part as one of the so called " Vic Big four". Hawks or Geelong have taken their spot.
Dont get me wrong im not saying we are any better. At least Carlton do have a history of success from long ago unlike us.
But Carlton have been a poorly run AFL Club for a very long time. Their aura is gone forever IMO.

Report on 7 just now that Hanneberry has a mild hamstring tear. Bit confusing though, St Kilda says they're monitoring and awareness but 7 says it's an actual tear

I'd say the "problem" is more likely that we performed too well for our own good during our rebuild.

Teams like Carlton and Brisbane have just stayed down the bottom sucking balls, but all the while collecting elite talent from the top of the draft, whereas we went from spoon to missing the finals by percentage (and finishing two wins clear of the next 9 teams) within two years, and then winning 11 games the next year on top of that, so we only had the 3 years in a row there with access to top 5 picks.

And one of those 3 that we picked up with those picks was always going to be a long term project, but has been made even longer, by 6 concussions, a broken collarbone, broken foot, and broken thumb.

Then we delayed our first pick by 12 months the following year, which was a move hopefully good for the long term, but not necessarily so much the short.

We'll have a much clearer idea of the quality of our drafting during this rebuild by the end of this season, once we see how the likes of Billings, Acres, Gresh, Paddy, Sincs, Battle, Long, Lonie, Marshall, Clark and Coffield go, with another preseason under their belts, hopefully better coaching and so-on.

the days of stacking talent from falling down the bottom of the ladder for a significant period of time, no longer works. it costs you too much.

its all about the continuation of elite standards and innovation.

stay down long enough and you get a disconnect, which is very hard to rebuild.

its why one of the most important aspects to WCE premiership was the involvement of the previous generation of players and administration.

The report is from Tom Browne who has turned into Damien Barret v2 so take anything he says with a grain of salt.

All the latest premiership winners have spent time down the bottom of the ladder sometime in the previous decade. Literally the only team who hadnt was Sydney who had legups through COLA and academy picks for years.

The difference is that those winning clubs didnt have a 5 year period of throwing away 4/5ths of all their draft picks on nobodies like we did.

WCE hadn't spent 7 years out of finals. neither had their rival the pies.

richmond and adelaide hadn't. the key here is dimma only took 3 seasons to make finals, but their rebuild was also formed during the previous era, where you had a decent priority pick, no access to free agency or the current father/son zoned model.

i'm not saying it hasn't worked, i'm just stating it no longer works under the current model.

now its about not falling down the ladder and doing everything you can to stay competitive and handing over that winning culture.

the sink down the bottom, collect picks, trade everything not in the next build and rebuild from nothing model is gone. it no longer works.

I missed the "Signifiant time" part but my point still stands that doing everything you can to "stay competitive" also doesn't work as literally one team who works that model has won a premiership and that was 7 years ago.

God how I wish that were true. But if they ever do get their sugar properly back together, you'll see the sleeping giant reawaken. We should merge them with GWS while they have half their personnel.

The campaigners are even using orange in their training tops FFS. Do it AFL, pleeeease because they won't be irrelevant forever.

Anyone seen richos interview on the saints website. He thinks were going to be strong this year. Hahahahaha give that man some floppy shoes.

Contrary to anything Richo does I think we will be a much improved side this year. He will be forced to use players in positions and in a manner he hasn't previously considered. Our setups and structures will be more proactive and positive with the players belief in the new assistants. Also with Ratten in the Co Pilot seat we have him to steer the ship when Richo is overwhelmed.

Having said that we wont have to improve much to be a step up on last year's results.

What's he meant to do? Say we're going to be poor to below average at best?

This type of criticism is bizarre.

Let 'em rot...

Article on Fox Sports with comments from Steele and Coff about Slater’s impact at the club.. not a great deal of detail but I feel as though Steele has now been the voice in a number of pieces over the summer period. I’m wondering if this is a deliberate effort from the club and a possible pointer towards our next captain after Gears?

Would be great if it happened this year. Geary is a shocking captain. Worst in the AFL.

Couldn't go past this without taking a shot too, because well …. Carlton bashing is just fun. 2 of my favourite stats are below.

Fitzroy (1981 - 1996) - 137 wins, 212 losses, 39% winning percentage, 2 wooden spoons (kicked out of the comp)
Carlton (2002 – 2018) - 124 wins, 246 losses, 33% winning percentage, 5 wooden spoons

And as bad as Carlton have been until now, consider this. Only 3 of the top 10 in their 2018 B+F will actually even still be there in 2 years. They have a couple of quality players 30+, then Cripps, Curnow, Docherty (2 knees) and a bunch of high draft picks with potential that have realistically shown absolutely SFA.

1st - Patrick Cripps (166 votes)
2nd - Kade Simpson (108 votes) - 35 this year
3rd - Ed Curnow (98 votes) - 30 this year
3rd - Charlie Curnow (98 votes)
5th - Dale Thomas (71 votes) - 32 this year
6th - Liam Jones (48 votes) - 29 this year
7th - Zac Fisher (47 votes)
8th - Sam Rowe (43 votes) - gone
9th - Matthew Wright (39 votes) - retired
10th - Marc Murphy (39 votes) - 32 this year

They list has been faarked for more than 15 years and is actually more faarked now than ever! Despite the hole we are in, we are not even close to Carlton level screwed. On behalf of everyone that remembers what they tried to do to us, lets all sit back and enjoy it!!

The Roar reckons we win one game all year, Wallace doesnt rate us.
I am getting more confident everyday.
All we need is Roly Poly Kings prediction

So that means we beat the suns round one then spend the rest of the year in the sack Richo and trade threads...

That Roar prediction is beyond a joke. To suggest we could win one game this year is just absolutely laughable and setting themselves up for a massive failure. Even if we were absolutely crap and worse than last year I'd still expect us to win the same number of games given our better draw. I get it that when you're down on a team you see them losing every game and he probably did the ladder predictor and it just came out that way, but the chances of us winning one solitary game would be about 2000-1. Hilariously bad prediction.
