Hey guys,
Great to see you have SPS as a starting mid, I really rate him and think he is going to be an out and out gun.
Do you actually think he will be a starting mid this year?

Yes, he'll be a starting mid.

He didn't have the endurance to play midfield in his first two seasons so the club positioned him at half forward.

I think the club will aim for a 70/30 split between midfield and half forward.

We'll obviously know a lot more come round 1, but hopefully he'll stay engaged in the game for longer periods.

I'm anticipating a good year for SPS with improved production, and hopefully a breakout year in 2020.

My Round 1 team;

B: Plowman Jones Newman
HB: Thomas Weitering Simpson
C: Walsh Cripps Fisher
R: Kreuzer Kennedy Dow
HF: SPS C. Curnow Murphy
F: Fasolo McKay McGovern
I: O’Brien Cuningham E. Curnow Setterfield

E: JSOS Goddard Polson Garlett

- Can’t see Fasolo missing if he’s fit. Proven goal kicker player albeit with some question marks.
- Daisy an absolutely lock and can’t believe some have him out of the 22. He was 5th in the BnF and has a mature body which we desperately lack.
- might be one utility short on the bench (ie Marchbank) but the tigers don’t have a tall team so not an issue
- Without meaning to open old wounds, my goodness S. Docherty would make our backline look a whole lot different.

I’d feel reasonably optimistic going in against the Tigers with this team. Not saying we’ll knock them off but we should be very competitive. It would be the first time in a long time that we don’t have guys running out simply to make up the numbers.

Best team (mid year no injuries)

B: Plowman Marchy Gartlett
HB: Willo Weitering Simpson
C: Walsh Cripps SPS
R: Kreuzer Setters Dow
HF: Cunners C. Curnow Fish
F: Fasolo McKay McGovern

I: O’Brien Murph E. Curnow Kennedy

Has skill, pace, toughness, flair.

?’s:
Gartlett ( who knows but has what we need here).
Simpson : will he keep form up ( Newman in or thomas, if not)
Cunners: love his package, can he put it together ( stocker may take this if not)

2020: Murph or ed make way for the rabbit. If Fasolo doesn’t work out Rioli (dreams)..

Round 1 team

B: Plowman Jones Newman
HB: Gartlett Weitering Simpson
C: Walsh Cripps Murph
R: Kreuzer Kennedy Dow
HF: SPS C. Curnow Fish
F: Cunners McKay McGovern

I: O’Brien Polson/jsos E. Curnow Thomas / setters (if cleared)

Updated for Round One after Practice Match

Garlett Jones Newman
Plowman Weitering Simpson
Kruezer Kennedy SPS
Murphy Cripps O’Brien
Cuningham Charlie Fisher
McGovern McKay Curnow
Setterfield Dow Walsh Jack
E: Polson Thomas Gibbons

The thought of Walsh and LOB on either wing in the future has me villainously rubbing my hands together. Also fish, SPS and Cunningham rotating from HFF to mid 🤯

FB: Plowman - Jones - Simpson
HB: Thomas - Weitering - Newman
C: Murphy - Cripps - LOB
F: Kreuzer - Kennedy - Ed Curnow
HF: SPS - Chas Curnow - Cuningham
FF: McGovern - McKay - Fisher
Int: Walsh - *Setterfield - Gibbons
then think we may go for JSOS as a utility or even Fasolo if fit
E: *Dow - Garlett - Polson - TDK/Flip
**whoever is fitter/better prepped come 21st March (or Gibbons out in place).

The problem with our best 22 is structuring our backline with Marchbank, Docherty and Williamson out.

I reckon the obvious solution is for McGovern to play down back until Marchbank returns.

With the marking power of Charlie and Harry, we can probably get away with having four smaller options surrounding them.

Lets be realistic here. The ball will probably spend a lot more time in Richmond's front half. Extra reinforcement and intercepting ability down back is probably going to be more valuable to us than a one off pack mark in the goal square.

All this means is we have another resting mid play across half forward. Just seems to be the simplest and most logical option in my eyes.

Round 1:

FB: Plowman -- Jones -- Simpson
HB: Thomas -- Weitering -- Newman

C: Dow -- E. Curnow -- Murphy
R: Kreuzer -- Cripps -- Fisher

HF: Setterfield -- C. Curnow -- Petrevski-Seton
FF: McGovern -- McKay -- Cuningham

Int: Walsh -- O'Brien -- Kennedy -- J. Silvagni

Round 1

FB - Simpson Jones Plowman
HB - Newman Weitering Thomas

C - Walsh SPS O'brien
R - Kruezer Cripps Dow

HF- Fisher Charlie Murphy
FF- McGovern McKay Fasolo

Int- Cunningham, E.Curnow, Setterfield, JSos

E- Kennedy,Polson,Lobbe, Garlett, Schumacher, Gibbons

Midfield hardest to chose right now. Think we will have to rotate some midfielders through HF and midfield (sps, fisher, Murphy, setterfield)

Backline worries me. How much better would it look with a fit Doc, Marchbank and Williamson? Maybe setterfield can run off the backline whilst he finds his feet.

Interesting to see if any I have listed as emergency can try to cement a spot through the JLT.

I hate criticizing players but if Thomas plays we lose. Last year was evidence, we played him off half back and he just provided very little leadership, run, mobility, disposal and defensive pressure. Yet it was his best year in Navy Blue - embarrassing.

We need to lift the bar and he is one that should see very little senior footy, if we are honest.

Hopefully our mids can provide more pressure up the ground so we’re not as exposed constantly. But I’m in the same boat as you with jsos nudging out Kennedy because he’s more versatile with a lean back six.

If we are honest he was one of the better players last year, he showed he had leadership and he put up the kms with the best in our team. If you look past the weird brain snap banana kick he actually provides tremendous voice. Hell be a regular this year. Hopefully getting phazed out in 2020

love how everyone is jumping on cuningham.... jet

He was sensational on Thursday against Hawthorn.

On a side note, I don't think the club will announce it but I reckon they're really keen to try and get Fasolo up for round 1.

Post Trade Period:

B: Plowman - Weitering - Williamson
HB: Docherty - Marchbank - Simpson
C: Fisher - Cripps - O’Brien
R: Kruezer - E.Curnow - SPS
HF: Dow - Charlie - Murphy
F: Pickett - McKay - McGovern

Pre-JLT:

B: Plowman - Jones - Newman
HB: Daisy - Weitering - Simpson
C: Fisher - Cripps - O'Brien
R: Kruezer - E.Curnow - SPS
HF: Dow - Charlie - Murphy
F: Cuningham - McKay - McGovern

- Jones for Marchbank
- Newman for Docherty
- Cuningham for Pickett
- Gibbons for Williamson
Thats the exact round 1 team i would have
Gartlett possibly could be in there if he plays well in the next couple practice games

Starting to build some depth in some areas and it’s going to be hard to pick those last couple spots. These are my locks at the moment:

Newman Jones —1—
Plowman Weitering Simpson
Kruezer —2— SPS
Murphy Cripps O’Brien
—3— Charlie Fisher
McGovern McKay —4—

Setterfield Dow Walsh Jack

1. Thomas Garlett or maybe even Curnow. I think he’s wasted inside 50 unless he has a forward tagging role which he may have but it’s clear they weren’t going to be going defensively last Thursday v hawks and focussed on offence only.
2. Curnow or Kennedy. If we revert to Curnow as a midfield tag this is what I’d prefer. I’d give Kennedy a role off the bench.
3 and 4. Both the small forward roles. I’d like to go Fasolo and cuningham. Fisher is already locked as the mid/fwd role.

Bench looks like setterfield, SOSAJ, Dow and Walsh. But will have to add in the players I’ve missed in deciding on 1-4 above. Some are going to miss out. And some are AFL quality NOW. So competition is going to be fierce. If we had Pickett, docherty, Williamson and Marchbank available it’s bloody very difficult who we put up.

Players I’m not really considering at the moment who could come in Kerr, Polson, Schumacher and Goddard.

Last years round 1 team. Lol

Simpson Jones Marchbank
Thomas Byrne Plowman
Mullett cripps Murphy
Kruezer Kennedy SPS
Fisher Casboult Curnow
Wright Curnow lamb

Silvagni Weitering Dow SOSAJ

Yeah, significant changes for sure.

Marchbank >>> whoever
Newman = Byrne
Fasolo = Wright
Walsh >>> Mullett
McKay >>> Casboult
McGovern >>> Lamb

- Marchbank out is a big loss, we don't have anyone of his calibre to replace him
- Newman replaces Byrne's output reasonably
- Wright's output is tough to replace but he declined significantly after a strong round 1 and Fasolo's goalkicking record speaks for itself
- Walsh, McKay and McGovern are significant upgrades on whomever they replace
- Weitering, O'Brien, Dow, SPS, Fisher, Kennedy, Cuningham, C. Curnow, McKay, Silvagni and even Cripps are significantly better after full pre-seasons and another year under their belts

I don’t think Marchbank is that great a loss as his kicking has been poor and it also forces us to go smaller in the backline.

Sounds like Garlet has been at least half the difference in the sides

I’d compare McGovern to the Marchbank exclusion as we are kind of going from 3 tall defenders down to two while going from 2 tall forwards to 3 this year. Which is why I don’t care too much about missing Marchbank.

Because we have significant upgrades on this team. Garlett got injured in JLT v hawks and didn’t play.
That game against the Tigers was an outstanding effort so I don’t think derision is deserved. Garlett played and kicked a couple of goals.
