Polson to surprise

Looks like he has the support from the coaches. If he can perform more like the Adelaide game will be a bonus for the season/best XXII
http://m.carltonfc.com.au/news/2019-02-08/bolton-shares-lessons-learned.mobileapp
“Pressure forward Cam Polson, who lives near Bolton, is one to have benefited from a lift home in recent weeks. During their trips, the Carlton coach has emphasised the importance of the defensive role the 20-year-old will play this season, regardless of his weekly output.

"He could have limited touches, but knowing that the coaches value it is something that takes a little bit of time to understand. We've been selling that really strongly," Bolton said”

The VFL and AFL seasons not being aligned is a big problem in my opinion. How can guys left out build match fitness?

Bye round 1 for the NB’s (rest) but I’d dare say practice matches will be set up leading into their season (though perhaps without action for 2 weeks if they have spell the week before the season commences > our bye).

Newman Weitering Cuningham
plowman Jones Simpson

Phillips Cripps Kennedy
Obrien Walsh Murphy

Curnow Curnow Polson
Fisher McKay SPS

Setterfield Silvagni Dow McGovern

Unlucky: Thomas Garlett Stocker

Is this the second year in a row that NB have a bye in round 1? If so, that’s bloody ridiculous and poor fixturing

I think you may want to revisit Garlett in the backline.

Thought Gibbons did alright across half forward.

Did you attend the game?

Not writing off anyone yet.

I like Gibbons but who goes out?

JSOS out for Gibbons.

I know JSOS had a nice moment where he smothered the ball in the centre, ran forward and kicked the goal but apart from that, he didn't show enough to be considered best 22. Think there are other players ahead of him. Needs time to continue his development in the Northern Blues.

Gibbons was always applying pressure on the ball carrier whenever he didn't have it. I was actually really impressed. He's playing like a guy who really wants to make the most of his chances.

Garlett out for Thomas. Garlett found a lot of the ball and turned it over almost every time. He would have had a DE of less than 20%. There's bad days, then there's what he produced today. As talented as he is, you can't have a player with such a large gap between their best and their worst in your starting 22. Needs to develop consistency in his game at the lower level.

Believe Garlett slaughtered 4 turnovers in the space of 20 odd minutes in defence.
Its only Feb but the wheat has to be sorted from the chaff at some point so lets hope he cleans up his disposal against *

Hey guys,
Great to see you have SPS as a starting mid, I really rate him and think he is going to be an out and out gun.
Do you actually think he will be a starting mid this year?

Gibbons has to play round 1 in my opinion. Last year we lacked any sort of spark at ground level in our forward line, he has it in spades. Tackles hard, links up well and I think with experience he'll gain composure and get to the right spots. Playing SOS or Polson ahead of him is a recipe for disaster.

Not sure how much spark Gibbons provided yesterday, really felt like he was still trying to find his feet and adjust to the pace.

You know who provided spark? Cuningham, and in spades.

My round 1 team as it stands:

FB: Plowman, Weitering, Newman
HB: Thomas, Jones, Simpson
C: Murphy, Cripps, O'Brien
HF: Cuningham, Curnow, Petrevski-Seton
FF: Fasolo*, McKay, McGovern
FOL: Kreuzer*, Fisher, Curnow
INT: Walsh, Kennedy, Dow, Setterfield
EMG: Lobbe/Phillips, Jack, Garlett, Gibbons/Polson

*assuming fit by rd 1

Cuningham is a lock for me. What I liked about Gibbons was his sidestep and agility. Laid a really nice tackle and linked up well a couple of times. I don't think he played well though but with a bit more experience I certainly think he'll come good.

Time for a revisit with more information now at hand.

Doc will not be there, and you would think both Marchbank and now Fasolo will be on the sidelines also.

Looking at something like this for now - not settled on the final bench spot yet.

B: Plowman - Jones - Simpson
HB: Thomas - Weitering - Newman
C: LOB - E Curnow - Walsh
HF: McGovern - C Curnow - Murphy
F: Fisher - McKay - Polson
R: Kreuzer - Cripps - Dow
Int: SPS - Kennedy - J Silvagni - Garlett/Bugg

Quick update on the back of yesterday's game vs Hawthorn -

B: Plowman - Jones - Simpson
HB: Thomas - Weitering - Newman
C: Murphy - Kennedy - Walsh
HF: McGovern - C Curnow - Fisher
F: E Curnow - McKay - Polson
R: Kreuzer - Cripps - SPS
Int: Dow - LOB - J Silvagni - Cuningham

Out - Garlett/Bugg
In - Cuningham

A few positional shifts but just the one change in personnel for now.

Cuningham works his way into the side on the back of a strong preseason and terrific performance yesterday. Garlett the one to drop out, who had assumed that final bench spot with Bugg retiring.

Was at the game yesty and based on my reading, I reckon our Rd1 team looks like this:

Notes:
1) WE NEED DAISY IN, need senior guys like this even if it's on for 10 touches a game. Ideally want him popping up as a fwd pocket for a sneak snap from boundary, but he'll sit in the backline this year.

2) Please leave Ed in the middle. Please! We lose way too much having him sit in the FP.

3) As good as Walsh looks, Newman will be the baggers best pick up. Our Docherty saviour.

B: Newman - Jones - Plowman
HB: Daisy - Weitering - Simpson
C: Murphy - E Curnow - Walsh
HF: Gibbons - C Curnow - Dow
F: Cunners - McKay - Polson
R: Kreuzer - Cripps - Fisher
Int: SPS - Kennedy - McGovern* - Setters**

*Underdone, lazy, I'd prefer he earn his spot by a bag in the twos. But he'll start.
**Not sure he'll be in, but I want him in as he'll be a 150+ gamer for baggers.

O'Brien - Just not convinced.
Garlett - Was putrid yesty and really his disposal was the issue in 2018 so it clearly aint changing, DON"T play him back, get him around goal if anything. On the flank.
Goddard - To be honest, he could be in for weiters.
JSOS - Sorry mate, you will/should struggle to get a game.
Fasolo - Needs to earn it.
TDK - in 2 years he'll be an absolute lock.

Williamson and March both come straight in when fit. Problem is our depth is shocking. Need to have our fingers crossed we keep kreuzer on the ground, these new rules are so important to have a BULL in the middle and a gun ruck. Yesterday we lost so many centre bounces and it showed on scoreboard.

Did you neglect to factor in its a practice match without a ruck and blokes on and off and tried out everywhere.....looks like it to me. Maybe wait till 6 weeks in before writing off half the list.

our depth is shocking? how many of the one player can you fit on a list of 40 odd players ya think?
