Federal Treasury scolds Coalition for exaggerating impact of Labor's proposed negative gearing overhaul

The revelation blunts the Government's attacks against the proposed overhaul of housing tax concessions.

The Australian Labor Party (ALP) wants to curb negative gearing deductions by limiting the tax break to new investment properties.
Since 2016, the Coalition has continued to claim the plan would "smash" housing values with a "sledgehammer".

But it can now be revealed Treasury explicitly told the Government it should not even claim home values "will" fall under the proposal.

Gotta make up for that crazy spending Coalition

Debt has skyrocketed under the economically irresponsible Coalition

That is spot on & the problem for Bill & Co is there is not the piggy bank to raid that Messrs Rudd & Swan had.

Canning coal exports directly or indirectly will do nothing for our standard of living. The Chinese may be doing Australia favour not accepting our coal now.

Any way you look at it housing values have fallen, no matter who claims they havent.

Did you miss the point entirely?

Dont think so .... owning property is a well accepted measure of wealth & aspired to by many Australians - negative gearing is a step to that aspiration, the tax deduction is but one peice of that aspiration.
IF your point was property ownership by politicians ... balance, are you inferring those named are the only property owners? Why

So house prices dropped under the Governments ecenomic mismanagement?

Or is that headline only for other Governments policies?

Housing price rises have been unsustainable in some markets, there was always going to be a day of reckoning, see Perth at the end of the mining construction boom not Government policy, supply & demand : yes/no?
Its a State Govt revenue problem.

What role if any did the banking Royal Commission have ... how long will it continue to dampen demand?

I was correct...you totally missed the point

I don't think it's in the interests of any political side for their wealth to be questioned, especially those who negotiated pay deals for union members for kick backs from construction firms.

Those who have wealth are usually very happy for others to come up to their level, it usually means even more growth for them.

If you want to just be jealous and use that as fuel to discredit some ideas then that's your right.

How much effect did the anti Chinese rhetoric have ?
Under employment ?
Unstable employment ?
Cuts in penalty rates?
Fears of massive government debt levels
I think you will find we are in a recession already masked by immigration
and lots of predictions of global recession to spook the banks and the borrowers

Anti Chinese rhetoric or action in real estate ownership? The rhetoric probably relates to the bulk coal ships held up outside Chinese ports.

Dont disagree on recession sentiment, the real estate boom has fuelled State Government surpluses (nothing to do with the party in Govt) & both NSW & Vic have infrastructure expenditure locked in well into the 2020s - the Perth Stadium spend is an example of how the carry over in ongoing spending was predicated on continued 'boom' revenues. Same thing may well happen on the east coast regardless of who is in power.

Anti Chinese one was taxing them for not occupying their properties
....the Australian government introduced a new foreign resident capital gains withholding payment of 12.5 per cent on dwellings of more than $750,000.

The Morrison government has pledged to reduce the migration rate but figures released on Wednesday show that without migrants fuelling consumption, Australia's economic growth would be going backwards.

Easier abortions for all. If right wing nut jobs weren't obsessed with the culture wars they'd support Shorten's Labor on this. Means less disobedient little shits from unenthusiastic parents running around late at night 13-17+ years from now.

The left wing were always going to head this way. The party for those who want big government interventions, the sort of people who think "someone should do something about this, get the government to handle it" are the sort most likely to shirk their responsibility to the life they created if there is a government provided way out.

Long story short, you don't really want to walk down that path of selectively choosing who gets to exist. Otherwise you'll find someone looking at the stats books and asking which group of people cost the most in welfare and incarceration per population percentage and nobody wants to live in THAT world.
