Charlie Curnow just needs to clunk some marks. He legit gets his hands on everything. He doesn't have to take the spectaculars in large packs but simple marks leading up on the wing/half forward just needs to hold them. Think he is confidence player and didn't get off to a great start this game and never got going from there. If he takes some marks early in a game and gets confidence he has the potential to be anything.

Hate's us almost as much as GWS. So I don't see it.

Though, cynical me thinks that a fat paycheck would sooth any irritation or the stress of selling out.

Yeah, for no particular reason I get the feeling that money talks even louder to Roos than to most others.

Regarding his apparent hatred for us, I’m old fashioned (or naive) enough to think that his childhood loyalties might count for something in his later life, even if he has an axe to grind with us from his playing and coaching days. Here he is writing about how he barracked for us as a kid, to the point of attending both our 1972 and 1973 grand finals against the Tigers - https://www.playersvoice.com.au/paul-roos-loudest-mcg-crowd-in-my-life/#GuRdqL2gD8Zu3Yj6.97 ... I guess it’s often the case that there’s nothing more vicious than an ex (I believe that Mussolini began his political life as a revolutionary socialist!).

Charlie out of form more than anything

Ball movement was on the brink of laughable in some passages

Dow always tries to make something happen and I appreciate that - keep at it kid.

Very pleased with Weitering, Walsh, Newman, Fisher, Cunningham, Setterfield

I think we did okay a 6/10 type of performance. Richmond are clearly the better team top four and we missed Kreuzer and Docherty in a big way last night.

Missing run from defence - Garlett start running boy.

FMD we played the premiers of 2017 and the best team of 2018 -except for a poor game against the pies, they could easily have gone back to back.
Even though Lynch got some cheap goals and i didnt rate his game, he does make them stronger, and he got their hormones flowing early- just because he was their prize recruit. The tiges had a point to prove and they came out of the gate HARD, but then the wonderful thing about our youngsters, was that they absorbed the assault , then regrouped and for the next 2 quarters outplayed them. Lets not underestimate that feat. Lots to like and we will build and learn from that exciting effort.

This is it.

The good: we have a lot more guys who can be relied on now, guys who can be part of the future. Walsh, Setterfield, Newman, Cuningham all played well. Weitering’s confidence grew and he looked fantastic. We are getting closer to having an AFL caliber list - add Docherty (sigh) and Kreuzer and we are a 22 man team that isn’t an eyesore at least. It feels like we are watching most of the next decent Carlton team, not a bunch of temps, which is nice at least.

Also good to see a lot better play from our outside players. Walsh and Newman, but also Murphy playing off a wing. It meant we went head to head in the center against the top team in the comp with Cripps + Dow (19) Fisher (20) and rotated Cuningham (21), SPS (21) and Setterfield (21) through. All said, midfield did very nicely for such an insanely young group

We went heavily man on man at times and it worked well. Sure, some young guys got pushed off the ball by bigger bodies but you could see the talent and our fitness/running held up

The bad: a few players seem down on confidence - prticularly for round 1. Charlie Curnow and SPS examples. McGovern looked afraid of contact. McKay got better as the game went on. Garlett has absolutely no idea. And the whole team really dropped their heads when it wasn’t going well - first quarter and mid last. That’s more bottom team in round 22, not round 1.

Ugly: our setup and structure in the first quarter was hideous. In 6-6-6 your wings and how they adjust are critical. We played a first gamer and a 3rd gamer. When Houli started on the back of the square and ran into defence to give an extra man we didn’t pick this up, and just hacked the ball forward and this killed us in q1 - it was only after quarter time that we adjusted and went sideways to Walsh who had an entire half the ground to himself. We also started McKay on the bench, then brought him straight on into the ruck - it was the 17 minute mark before he set foot inside 50, which was bizarre. Had some issues with zone placement too - new rules mean either setting the zone further back, or playing much looser. Got some of this sorted, particularly the defensive side but it was too late.

Bottom line is, for 400 odd possessions, we kicked 1.3 in 60 minutes of footy.

Having said that, can’t remember too many times in the last 5 years we’ve won the uncontested possession count and controlling the ball for longer periods

That was a positive to me, we are spreading much better.

But the forwards need to work so much harder

Trying to be positive after a 6 goal loss, there were some passages of play where our kicking made us look like a completely different side, 30 to 40 metre passes opening up the corridor then for periods where Richmond were on top we went into our shell and kicked down the line.

The side is young we should focus on taking the game on for four quarters, it might get ugly some weeks but the foot skills are there to do it, still just not fit enough to do it a whole match.

Didn’t turn up for the start of the game, played 2 good quarters and then ran out of steam.
Walsh, Cripps, Newman were fantastic. Dow, Fischer and Cuningham made some dumb decisions but there were promising signs.
C Curnow had a mare, Garlett and Phillips are not good enough. Thought Nankervis was best on ground, walked in 3 goals and slaughtered Phillips.
Still a chance against Port next week.

I love how every s**t Carlton supporter decides to come out the first game of the year if we start to lose... really... we are young... we won two games last year... it’s not going to change over 1 pre season... but seriously have a think about your comments before you post... derogatory comments cannot help and makes me think if you are really Carlton supporters or just trolls trying to bring us down... might be a smart thought of us all to sign up as opposition members and post that they are s**t, to see if we can bring their confidence down... but really!!!On iPhone using BigFooty.com mobile app
This bears repeating..........

I saw Charlie absolutely tanked a couple of Saturday nights ago, stumbling across the road and almost falling in the gutter. I really hope this hype hasn’t gotten to his head. I hope Bolton is brutal with him in the match review because his performance tonight was unacceptable.
A couple of weeks back but you managed to keep it to yourself till after the match. Yeah right.

As a tiger who hates carlton if he gets done for that I’d almost give the game away

All Jack’s media mates and ex FWD’s will squeal about it for the whole weekend.

Hey presto - come Monday “2 weeks”.

Not too many ex DEF’s have roles in the media - I.e Fox pre game McGuire plus Little dick Reiwoldt(NR cousin)Lyon/Brown. Not that they would be biased in any way......

Gonna nip this in the bud first chance I can get. Phillips was one of our worst on ground, by a fair way. Nankervis kicked 3 goals all running goal side of Phillips, who was unable to go with him. Phillips did nothing offensively either, then... In the last quarter Mckay was forced to ruck about half of it, maybe longer because Phillips is simply not fit enough.

Disagree. I watched Phillips closely and his work around the stoppages with the mids was very good. Did his role. First game in a long while and will get better and better

Were we really improved?? I really dont think so, this is the best list we have had in years on PAPER. But the output was equal to or below much of what we served up last year with an inferior list.

Dont let the good 35 mins of footy fool you. That was a piss weak display tonight.

I saw lots of improvement from last year and it’s only round one. Playing the best side in the comp. we will learn so much.

Ed should be in the midfield make no mistake, but he isn't deserving of the hate he is getting. Had to have had the most assistants on the field and would have to be up there with pressure acts. Yes fumbled but as did everyone else, it was contagious tonight. The hate for Ed should be directed at the coaching panel for playing him in the fwd line. Only clear drop for next week is Phillip for me.

He did play his role Soapy but with such a young midfield we need a ruckman that can do more than just try to get the hitouts. We would have been better off with Cas in the ruck tonight playing a Mumford style basher and crasher in the middle.

Really enjoyed Weiterings game, much stronger now and able to body players, even threw some love Lynches way early with a big bump, love the confidence it has afforded him.

Dow started like a house on fire, faded a little but found enough of it. Look out once he has completely grown into his body.

Walsh was fantastic, already making others arpund him better, so wrapped we kept pick 1.

Setterfield has a lot of presence, can't wait to see him play with a fully mature and fit body with 50 games in him. Will be a big brownlow vote poller.

Harry looked threatening the more the game went on, good signs.

Crippa, a slight off night, by his standards (a few fumbles) but overall a solid game and at least a vote.

Fasolo, under done.

Gartlett, soft.

Murphy, just as soft, maybe softer.

Gov, better as game wore on, can't wait to see him fit.

Charlie, struggling with expectations. Will come good without a doubt.

Gibbons, quite but showed good smarts and will only get better with more exposure at this level.

Fish, solid game, loved his tackles on dusty (who is struggling with his dads situation as it has truly sunk in and would be missing him heaps understandably).

Ed, unobtrusive game but had the most score involvements.

Phillips, just good to see him fit, plays again next week.

Newman, solid debut and a fantastic pick up. A gem of a goal when we needed one. Good players do those things.

Plow, solid, mister consistency.

Cunners, really looks to be playing with a lot of confidence, great to see, might just make it after all.

Jones, didn't stand out bit that's not a bad thing.

Simpson, god bless him.

SPS, not his best night, some good things, especially his delivery.

Thomas, was solid, his experience is a bonus to our side.

It’s one game.

First quarter, Charlie wasn’t hungry for it and sps did nothing.

The rest by in large worked hard and did alright. At this stage of our development we can’t afford to have
guys like that not be in involved

There was some terrible umpiring decisions against us early and two or three small mistakes and that’s how we ended up 30 odd down.
Very good observation
