his brother is confusing norf supporters - they are persisting with ben up back and it ain't going well - they too are questioning the amount of time he spent in the twos last year as some were here re harry - seems to be coming up roses now.......who knew bolts knew stuff like that?

Carlton Football Club: The Round Three Review

Another loss. Another review. Another chance for people to come at me with derogatory comments and ill-constructive feedback.

Do remember that I am no qualified writer or journalist. Just an everyday person. I'll keep bringing this up if I have to. Take my views lightly.

Went to the game with some Sydney supporting rellies. Said to them pre-game, we're playing 2 good quarters of footy a game, 1 ordinary quarter and one absolute tripe. That turned out to be prophetic.

I'm not sure if its opposition sides adjusting after a good term from us, or if we're getting too caught up with adjusting to try and counteract the opposition. Maybe a bit of both. Our quality football seems to be built on dominant stoppage work, and the occasional quick play from the backline.

We're lacking the discipline and consistency of execution to play the slow build-up game, and it's pretty much down to personel. We have some guys who can drive off half back, but by and large they lack a high class defensive game. We have some guys who can work over their man, but for the most part they're not reliable users or decision makers with the ball. Really missing Doc and Willo from that mix.

We neeeeeed a small forward or two. Ed did a great job, but that performance is the exception not the rule for him. Gibbons and Polson try hard, but given our number of entries, 4 touches each is really underwhelming. They were both in position to impact sometimes, but both were guilty of over-running the ground ball. Maybe they'll work through it, but I'd rather we use the mid-season draft as an opportunity to grab a livewire quick like Matt Parker at St Kilda and see what effect that has.

Need to keep getting the ball in the hands of Walsh and SPS forward of centre, and Newman and Weiters down back. They're our most creative players by a mile. That needs to be complimented by better positioning and running to provide options for them to kick to. Nearly spat my Fanta watching Newman look down the line (nobody on) then for the switch (nobody moving there) then back to the wing (still nobody making space) and then kicking it on the full trying to gain as much territory as possible.

Same goes in the forward line. Multiple times there were ground ball contests around our 50m arc, and when one of our players got hands on the ball and slammed it on the boot, we had nobody within 25m of goal. Sydney certainly did though...

Now, if you'd asked me which of our players would show the most discipline in lowering their eyes coming into the forward line, Casboult's name wouldn't have even entered my mind. But FMD, the bloke's match tape should be shown to every other player in the side. Chip kicks into space for players to run on to. Works a helluva lot better than sitting a high ball on the head of a 2 on 4 in Sydney's favour. Well done, Levi, justified your selection in my eyes.

Need a big lift in intensity and physicality next week. GC are showing more than anyone expected this season, but if we can't knock them over the heat is gonna get turned up real high by all and sundry. Need to get some points on the board early in the season.
Good post, agree re Levi. Had 7 i50’s.

Not really. They had 7 former first round picks in their team today - we had 12.

A lot of their lineup are mid-range draft selections or players they’ve brought in for token draft picks (Witts, Miles, Hanley etc).

I’d imagine the games played comparison would be very similar.
Correct their now a cobbled together side with a lot of players from other clubs most of the quality players they received from their original draft concessions have bailed and left for mostly victorian clubs .
The concessions they received originally are now irrelevant .

Didnt mention Walsh last night. Head on his shoulders this one. Some decisions he makes and you think...ahhh yes. Thats what 300 games will do....oh its only 3.
Just amazing to think what he's going to be like after 50 games.

While watching live. Every time I saw Sinclair get the ball Lobbe was 10-20m away. He ran on the spread but followed Lobbe when we had the ball. Why is it that when we have ball teams are tight on us but when they have the ball they have players everywhere. I don’t get it. I still think Bolton is over complicating the zone. Just tell them to go man on man v GC.

Very evident and a good reason Sydney had 100 extra possessions.
They found and created space at will, whilst we mostly clustered ourselves around the ground.

Sydney played a game that probably wouldn't win them that many games, but they were simply too mature and wise for us.
I feel we're still a little too conservative in our game. May minimise the loss margin, but won't win us many games, as things stand.

Haven't read all the pages, but I have to vent my spleen.
Was at the game, screamed mu guts out, voice still croaky.
I sent a message at 1.49pm Friday, say we would have 2 goals in the 1st 4 min. Well we should have.
We must learn to take our chances when they come.
I'm not going to blame umpires, because we didn't deserve to win. But I counted at least 3 clear push in the backs, the umpires didn't see and gifted goals to Swans. Buddy gets away with alot of crap. I think the umpires get sucked in or over awed with the star.
I was one the called for Kennedy, I will let this one go, because I understand he was underdone and sore.
Hopefully he is good for this week.
You can't win a game when there is 110 difference in possession.
Our run and spread is crap. Our delivery needs a lot of work.
Simpson well down on last years standard. Dow very sloppy with delivery.
Swans just more solid and mature. Heeney killed us. Was probably the difference.
We really miss Charlie and McGov and Kruezer. Let's not forget what a champion Kruezer is.
Gibbons & Polson OUT!! LOB not far behind, LOBE not at this level.
THE POSITIVES:
  • Cripps, what can we say. Probably MVP in the league
  • Harry, great hands, breaks a record. Highly regarded from the inner sanctum at Carlton. Will be a star
  • Liam Jones, won the points against Buddy, great game
  • Ed - surprised all the critics with his performance
  • SPS - looking more and more like he belongs
  • Walsh - covered 16.2 Kms wow!!. Just needs to get quicker & cleaner. Another star
  • Good first up game from Marchbank
Very frustrated, think we will lose to suns. Hope I am very wrong.

Something else that has to be said. Why, when our forwards kick goals, is it "great work", but when the opposition kick goals it's because our defenders were "unacceptable"?

Feels like a double standard. We expect our defenders to never be beaten by an opponent, and when they are we crucify them as being below the required level. Yet if our forwards kick goals they're outstanding players beating the competition's best, and our midfielders are delivering it lace out.

Seems to me it should be somewhere in between. Sometimes the opposition get a mark and goal because the delivery was superb, or their forward was just too good, not because our defender is shit one on one amd needs to be dropped.
People are critical of Plow because Heeney who is a very good player out bodied him on a ball kicked to his advantage. Would have liked a better effort but can't win them all.

Conversely Haywards and Sinclairs marks were poor defending and very dissapoiniting

Pffft at least you have seen a flag, look at the positives at least. Its not 2015 being coached by Malt with no kids of any promise apart from Cripps and Doc.
We are playing better this year by far from any of Bolts other years and yes I include 2016 and 2017 because we are not flooding endlessly and bringing games down to what was our level to stay competitive.

Indeed. It was in fact Sydney who brought the game down to their level for a half as the only way they had to control the outcome of the game. For the 1st and last quarters they did not have that control, and we would have won except for their superior goalkicking accuracy.

Our 2015 draft class is:
Weitering
Mckay
Charlie
Cuningham
JSOS.

Weitering, McKay, and Charlie are looking amazing! Cuningham was looking great before his injury, and JSOS is an important fringe play (not bad for a late pick).
Pretty fair haul from SOS.

Hayward's mark in the first was a clear push-out, as blatant a free kick as you can get.

Was Sinclair's the mark in the 3rd which wasn't even a mark? Can't remember the player.

Positives:
First quarter offence - leads strong, smalls in good spots
Cripps a star once again
Walsh's overall fitness is fantastic, needs to work on kicking with his non preferred
Jones did a good job defending the attacks coming into Buddy
Ed Curnow playing his best game of the year
Murphy looking better week by week

Negatives
First quarter defence - this is where we lost the game, couldn't cement a lead without so many marks inside 50 for the Swans.
Allowing Aliir to be loose for so long. He was untouched for most marks. Tactical error in not putting someone on him as a defensive forward.
Weitering and Jones had 18 touches between them, not enough in modern footy proving we failed to have much control of the ball. Simpson (12 touches) noticeably absent in this regard too.
Tackling (-18 on this stat) too many broken tackles, not enough pressure around the ball
Fitness? I thought we looked off the pace in the final quarter
Mids must be embarrassed that they were taken to the cleaners by Zak Jones

Thoughts on changes:
After two positive efforts, thought the two unforced changes were unnecessary and added almost nothing to our game. With two forced changes, think match committee should have held their fire for another week.

Players on Chopping Block:
Lobbe
LOB
Plowman
Setterfield
Gibbons
Polson

Takeaway: A thoroughly disheartening match. I am enjoying the improvement in the kids and seeing the development of the team as a whole but this was a good chance at a win and felt our leaders went missing when the game was on the line. Gold Coast are looking a hell of a lot better than most thought they would, but its time for the team to stand up - a lift in pressure and a lift in defence and we will be a good chance for a win.

I lost my shit when that play happened. Ball wasn't within the 5 metre area when the push occured. Utterly woeful umpiring.

If someone is blaming Plowman for that I suggest they didn't actually watch the game.

Not sure which mark in the first you are referring to, maybe Blakey's where Buddy pushed out Jones prior to the mark.

I was referring to Hayward's late in the second where 4 swans did their best to spoil Hayward, who barely held it. Not a Carlton defender in sight it the contest. Unacceptable

While we were screwed by the umpires ( we can add the Kennedy goal which only happened because Papley caught Cripps high and the dodgy ruck infringement decision in front of goals at the start of the 3rd), Sydney would have stepped up and found a way to get the job done on the day without the umpires assistance.

What disappointed me was that we were on top in the midfield in the first and Walsh was starring, he was just as damaging as Cripps, then they went to work on him. He copped a fair work over off the ball and not one of our senior boys did a thing to help from what I saw, I could be wrong. To his credit, he worked himself back into the game, he is amazing to watch.

Bolton has access to Dave Rath, the guy who taught Hawthorn how to kick, please use him for Dow who does a lot of good but lets himself down with his kicking.

Jones killed us in the 2nd and should have been tagged.

We need 2 senior bodies and 2 youngsters in the middle to support the young blokes, otherwise they will be stuffed by mid year as they are being bashed from pillar to post. (Gibbons, Ed, Murphy)

Polsen looked great when he went the ball and intercepted, every other time he was ball watching and waiting for them to grab it then apply a tackle, really dumb football which was indicated in his stats, Gibbons was much the same. If we wanted a forward pocket why didn't we get one instead of a midfielder who is not going to play there?

Levi needs to stay at the moment, what he adds is the hurt factor of crashing packs as Charlie, Mackay and even at this stage, Gov. What this does is put doubt in the minds of defenders who want to block the holes.

I thought the umpiring for front on contact was very poor, with Mackay and Levi both copping heavy front on hits in the last and then Heeny gets one paid at the other end?

Lower the eyes going forward ffs, if the crowd can pick up what we are doing, then so can the opposition, Sydney outnumbered us in the air and also at ground level when we bombed it in, where were our numbers?

We have to get the **** out of Marvel and play as fewer games there as possible.

We just don't play good football there.

Gotta play where they tell you...

When this group hit the 30-50 game together mark it won’t matter where the game is...

Hayward's mark in the 1st was the blatant free to Carlton. Goal.

There was a mark paid in the 3rd where 2 Sydney players grabbed it at the same time, neither had any control, the ball spilled to the ground. Mark paid, 35 out directly in front, goal.

Buddy, 2 handed shove to Jones' back in the 2nd. As blatant a free kick as there is in football. Mark paid. Goal.

And the ruck infringement you mentioned in the 3rd. Sinclair had a fist-full of Lobbe's jumper, but received a holding free kick. Goal.

Those 4 goals had a massive influence on the game.
And that's without even considering Buddy's free in the 1st, and Heeney's in the last, both written up in the Hun's match report as bad decisions.

Harry took a mark that was judged a play on as well.

Dustin Martin complaining of being scraggged, ROFL compared to Cripps!

However, I believe the result flatters us and Sydney let us get close. We were at "home".
