Too early to say but there is a history of Islamist attacks on Christians at times of religious festivals. Such as the 2016 Berlin truck attack and the 2017 Palm Sunday church bombings in Egypt. Rome is currently on high alert for fear of attacks on the Vatican and this week Anti-terrorism police foiled a planned attack in Seville.

"A foreign intelligence agency has reported that the NTJ (National Thowheeth Jama'ath) is planning to carry out suicide attacks targeting prominent churches as well as the Indian high commission in Colombo," said the alert.​

The NTJ is a Muslim group in Sri Lanka that came to notice last year when it was linked to the vandalisation of Buddhist statues.​

The LTTE have effectively been defunct for a decade, meanwhile Sri Lanka (and every other country, really) has had concerns about fighters returning from IS. The targets and symbolism immediately indicated Islamic terrorism.

I'm not right across Islamist terror attacks in SL but posted on the other thread this seems to have more a european flavour to it in the targets, ambition, coordination and the big numbers of deaths
