Scape Goat The Cam Guthrie Echo Chamber

My view is that Constable has made Cam redundant in the midfield

You could be right.

The modern game is making him redundant. He's a terrible player defensively - relatively soft, not physical, poor tackler. You can't carry it, it's the main reason we've been dispatched from finals in recent years. It should have been clear after both the Tigers and Dogs won flags, then the Pies adopted that mentality.

You're more useful as a defensive midfielder today than a ball carrier, plain and simple. You need your talented players too, but not if they're refusing to be physical and defend.

Cam will get another opportunity in the side, he either changes to suit or the team continues to carry him. I just wonder how honest 'softy' Scott is with him.

I joined this website to say this one thing: GET RID OF CAMERON GUTHRIE AND MENEGOLA.

Shouting. We got it all ready. You have joined to be part of the negatives group (or just rebadged)?

Anyway.
Good luck with that. IMO Menegola is now integral to this teams effort. Guthrie is depth. Might be moved on but still a lot to happen before he does go.

So is this that Blighty guy under another name?? LOL. Should've joined the Negative Nuffies website me thinks.
Anyway fishing is only fun if catch a few...
So please so don't consider this post as a fish, it's just an acknowledgement that some people are here for different things.

:(

Poor Cam. Wasn't so long ago #guthintheguts was the key to our next premiership tilt.

It was such a sure thing, I just don't get it..

Cam Guthrie is like every player. If the quality of the players in the picking order below you improves and you don't, the day comes when you are on the list as a back up. For the last 2 years anyway Cuthrie has been selected purely because injuries and lack of experience in the kids meant there was a lack of better options. Those better options have arrived or been developed. Hopefully Cam gets the message and lifts because his best was pretty good.

Game high 8 tackles, 22 touches, 4 clearances and 0 clangers. He gives us a defensive toughness in midfield we seriously lack without him. He's clearly best 22 on performance and it's not close. He can be a key player for us this year.
Really? The 19 yo guy he replaced was as good if not better in his first ever game.

Thought Guthrie was good yesterday played a defensive role on Jeager and did well on and off the ball. I’m not always a fan of his but he can play a good role in the midfield either on a wing or in the middle.

Yeah I agree. I do find it interesting that he has become the new whipping boy. It's escalating by the day. The Blitz and Kolo haters have gone very quiet lately due to their good performances, and with Murdoch gone, I guess they need somebody else to replace them. That man is Guthrie.

Guthrie did okay yesterday, he clearly has limitations but is nowhere near as bad as he is being made out. He's also likely to get better with more games under his belt as he had a limited pre-season and has only played one game in the VFL. The intensity was there yesterday, so he can't be criticised for lack of effort. He's best 22 seven days a week and twice on Sunday.

I'm not a Guthrie fanboy, just a realist.

No he wasn't. Guthrie plays a key defensive role for the team and is one of the reasons our bad clearances early didn't turn into easy escapes for them because his pressure was excellent. Constable played as an inside accumulator and did well in the first 3 weeks but wasn't even in our couple of ball winning mids in any of those games. And let's be honest if Guthrie had played like Constable did in week 4 there would be calls to banish him from the country let alone the AFL team.

Guthrie is an important member of our midfield because his strengths make us vastly better balanced. Constable is an inside mid who's not in our best 4 or 5 in that area right now but deserves opportunities to develop and improve and may be best 22 depending on injuries, opponents, form and improvement. That's perfectly fine for a second year inside mid and he's progressing well but right now he's well behind Guthrie in value to the team. Frankly anyone even putting those two on the same level can only be doing it based on blindness to the excellent things Guthrie does while looking through massively rose tinted glasses at constable's games so far.

I don't really understand the hate for this Cam TBH. Played well yesterday, that's undeniable.

I thought he was played out of position down back the last couple of years, but it could have been really beneficial for him. Having a tagger, especially one who can find the ball themselves is still an important weapon to have. In the past 2-3 years we have tried Blitz, Menners and Scooter in that role with mixed success. Blitz is now an important part of our back line, Scooter can't get on the park and I dont think it is where Menengola plays best. Cam is now 1-0 this year in that role, having beaten O'Meara comprehensively.

If Cam Guthrie is depth - the pool must be pretty shallow!

Cam is now 1-0 this year in that role, having beaten O'Meara comprehensively.

O'Meara had 26 touches (12 contested), 5 tackles, 8 clearances, 1 Goal, 1 Behind

Guthrie had 22 touches (11 contested), 8 tackles, 4 clearances, no score

I don't know how these stats suggest a comprehensive 1 on 1 defeat, could you explain in more detail please? I'd suggest it was relatively even, if not O'Meara may have had the better of it if anything.

8 clearances is high IMO for a player being 'tagged' if that's what Guthrie did. My issue with Guthrie compared with other mids is he's not competitive enough, he's not desperate to win the football when it's his turn, he's not damaging unless he's on the end of a handball. It's just not enough in a hot game against a great opposition midfield to curtail a player to the above, not without being damaging offensively. Just getting his hands on the ball isn't enough.

Hawthorn's midfield right now is one of the worst in the league.

I thought Guthrie was relatively good yesterday too, I think for a 150 game senior player though he needs to improve to a higher standard more consistently. Otherwise the time is better invested in these hungry youngsters.

He didn't tag O'Meara yesterday. He was on him for a decent amount of the time but it wasn't a hard tag. For example in the first quarter it was about 50/50 him and Menegola who were matched up with O'Meara.
