He was a fine CHF.
Better hands than stewart loewe and a much better kick at goal
Great mark, but his goal kicking from my recollection was not quite that good, but in comparison to Wade of his era, not many were.

Moving back, I'm not sure why Brownless has been left out of the argument.
Prefer him to Lindner, who was brilliant but flaky.
Ablett and Brownless for me.
Ablett and Brownless were both individually brilliant, but I don't recall either of them being part of a really great 2 man setup tbh. Maybe Billy was a decoy for Ablett. We had Stoneham, Ablett and Brownless for a while. Also Lindner- hard to fit all those heads (egos) together in the one forward line at times.
Stoneham could have been Carey-like, but was often used to patch up ruck issues.
Great memories though, and those guys were so superior to some predecessors in the early 80''s- Peter Johnston and Glen Middlemiss- both those players had the attributes of the latter's surname- good marks, tall forwards ( Middlemiss 188 cm)both really struggled to kick goals from dead set in front, particularly PJ.
Middlemiss was a really talented kid- I recall him playing junior footy against us when I was a kid playing for the Joey's Nullas. He was so awesome, took speccy marks, everyone was in awe of him, strong, quick, tough, skilled, so it was no surprise he "made it" at Geelong eventually as a utility. Interesting how greats at school level appear way less awesome when they meet their peers at VFL/AFL level, or how ordinary we were as players.

Yeah, and I guess we tend to forget that Ablett only played forward for the latter years. So there really wasn't a consistent two-man set up in those years.

Donahue deserves a mention too. Hit the ton twice if I recall correctly.
And in that era, REX HUNT was a super CHF for us; pity we only had him for a year. And we never saw the best of Gary Sidebottom.
Hunt nearly won a Brownlow with us, he had such a dominant season.

Yep...or Rex the **** as we cleverly dubbed him. Was a mounted cop in his day job?

Have to wonder how good Brownless would have been if Ablett wasn't there
Very good the year Ablett went awol--81 goals 1991, 79 goals 1992.
Excellent v Doggies in finals series when GAS was in the stands suspended. 9 goals 1992-- Was sitting in the stand, Ablett right behind us, cameras on Ablett every time Brownless got a goal. We got fair exposure that night.
Billy should have been a superstar, but lacked some confidence and possibly hard work ethic.

How soon we forget...

1984 Ablett 33 goals Jackson 74 goals
1985 Ablett 82 goals Jackson 33 goals
Took my NZ born wife to her first ever AFL game, rd 1 1985 iirc, in her first year here. Ablett 6 goals, Jackson 6 goals, we kicked something like 20 goals 8 behinds to beat the Hawks. Hugely entertaining game at Waverley Park. Instant Cats supporter she became that day. (It was a condition of marriage anyway...)

When we kicked our record score 37-17 v Bears, 1992, Ablett 9, BROWN 6, Brownless 3, Stoneham 3...star studded forward line. Forssman and Riccardi also got 3 goals.
Paul Brown, another forgotten part-time forward hero.

Can we extend this discussion to opine on who we regard as the best ever dual combo throughout the comp?
I would have to say
1. Dunstall- Brereton
2. Longmire- Carey
3. Lockett-Loewe

No1 for me. Dunstall didnt miss and was way ahead of his time for forward pressure.
Dermie was awesome and went up a level in finals.
Obviously so did Carey, but Longmire is a long way behind the other FF's on that list.
Stuey Lowe underated too.

Also who was FF when Vander haar was playing? I've heard plenty about how good he was.
Paul Salmon?
Also for the opposite combo I reckon either,
Brennan-Jakovich
Or
SOS-Peter Dean

Salmon VDH, Salmon Merrett, Salmon TD
VDH defended a bit too.
What about Lynch Brown Lions?

In defence
Moore- Knights- brilliant
Moore-Mew
Langford-Mew
Southby- McKay
Leppa- Michael
Scarlett- Harley/Taylor

You must be just a couple of years older than me! lol

"Bill Ryan and Doug Wade"....and I'm thinking didn't Ryan back across the half back or something? When I was a kid I had a memory of him at Moorabin coming from the backline and challenging Paddy Guinane who was getting stuck into Ken Newlands. From then on I have always remembered him playing in the backline. Just checked his goals kicked. Oh. Ha ha.

From memory Ryan had the double handed ball drop which looked awkward but was effective in front of the big sticks.
His mark V Saints where he stood on the shoulders of a guy who was also in the air riding another bloke remains one of my all time favourites

Wade was the man though - those huge torps sailing well over post height straight thru the middle from huge distances out were unforgettable - note some exaggeration possible from my memories as a young tacker :)

This Club has given me so much enjoyment over the last 55 or so years
