We are at a point where it is all about quality for FA and trades.

We aim high, so Cognilio, Martin and Papley, great if we land them.

If we don’t land all of them, then the lessons are there of what not to do (and so we think very carefully if we instead take B. Crouch, S. Gray, etc.):

North 2018 - Polec, Hall, Pittard, Tyson

Port -
2018 - Lycett, Burton, Mayes
2017 - Rockliff, Watts, Motlop

Tippett and Franklin at Sydney are others.

Forgetting current ladder positions for those sides, it is a fine line when bringing in established players.

At the end of last year North brought in mature players and delisted/traded 9 of 11 of their youth. I think that list could be in trouble

Sydney and Port still have quality youth

I reckon Martin could be done for a 2nd rounder with maybe a 3rd for a 4th (as rumoured). Why would SOS include Casboult for peanuts when he’s worth far more to us as a versatile tall.

Papley is worth Adelaide’s 1st rounder not just because he’s an excellent player but because he’s the player we need. Sydney have an abundance of forwards, so i reckon this trade get done.

I’m also firmly of the view that if COGs leaves GWS he’s coming to Carlton. Clarkson pitching to COGs during the season is a desperate act. Without COGs Hawthorn are gonna slide down the ladder and that’s the end of ‘destination club’ for them.

Gil chiming in will have exactly zero influence on Conogilo’s decision and nor should it.

If I was COGs and I was offered a fat salary to play for a top four club that pulls crowds and is destined for finals, possibly even premierships, all that other ‘noise’ is not going to sway my decision one iota.

COGs, Martin, Papley - SOS drops mic and signals over to you Teagey.

Brotherly insight:

Would the McLachlan brothers be right or might the Lloyd brothers be right?

(and why the huge change of ❤ for ‘Llordo’?)

it may not actually be our best 22 but it‘s probably more about the highlights and the news breaking marker.

I would love to see one more season of Doc and Simmo.

That’s a huge call Coops. Personally, I can see both franchises deserving to fold, but I can’t see the AFL actually allowing it to happen, because Gil & Co need a meaningful presence in those sizeable markets (horrible corporate speak, I know, but let’s face it - TV and corporate sponsors are a crucial driver in the game).

No, if required, I think that the AFL will simply pour obscene amounts of money into GWS and the Suns to artificially keep them afloat, until such time that technological advances allow those clubs to attract and retain players who are strong, reliable, and loyal to those frontier franchises. I’m thinking of players along the lines of these prototypes, who should have no problem coping with the atmosphere at GIANTS Stadium and Metricon Stadium:

They'll artificially keep them afloat as long as possible but at some point they'll have to drop them, more move them. .

I'm more concerned about GWS that the Suns tbh. The Suns get similar crowd numbers despite not being able to win, and when they were winning (relatively speaking, they still didn't make the 8) they were averaging over 16,000 to a game, about 5-6 thousand more than GWS now. If the Suns can find some on field success I think they'll be alright, they just have to get there!

But that's why I'm concerned about GWS moreso, they're winning and are perennial premiership contenders yet still only get 10,000~ to a game. What will that drop to if they aren't contenders anymore? Not good.

It'd cost all our picks and all our salary cap headroom - and totally be worth it. I don't yet dare to dream of this actually happening. But those three added to our growing squad would see a quantum leap in performance, I think.

It's effectively:

Dow -> Coniglio
Deluca -> Papley
LOB -> Martin

No disrespect to our youngsters on the left, who are all tracking OK, but that's a huge improvement in output straight away AND sustainably into the future.

Hawthorn supporters are hilarious with their selective hearing:

"Hamish McLaughlin would know about Cogs because of who his brother is - hes coming!", and then a week later:

"Mathew Lloyd wouldn't have a clue even though his brother is Carltons GM of Football - hes coming!"

They've become so desperate that their resident "ITK" who they are all hanging their hat on, is using our ITK mail (re: Papley/Martin) to try and build credibility.

Stupid sexy 2020 Carlton.

PS - Lloyd has nailed our potential best 22.

He is the perfect all rounder. Why the hec wouldn't you want him for another coupla years at least? Can ruck and play forward or back. Who else can come in and do a 'Liam' like job down back?
Maybe depends how far away you think finals are? I can see us making the 8 next year.
Spot on...no logic in letting cas go and I agree we can make the 8 next year. We have a lot of young talent and plenty of salary cap to offer very good deals to cogs etc. our focus is not on draftees anymore we need abled bodies that can compete now. Cas is perfect player to have around over the next couple of years.

This is the information i have been waiting for re the trigger clause.
Sounds like it’s played out the way i was hoping.
The clause has been triggered, contracting Casboult for another year on the same money as this year, therefore, a trade is required if Casboult seeks to leave for a better offer.
My hope was always to tie Casboult into a trade for Martin, eg :
Martin for Casboult and our future 2nd.

You could probably make a case for a straight swap without the second rounder, RB.

Still, reckon Casboult stays. Loyal Bagger in good form, and gives us AFL quality coverage in 3 different positions. Even with a fully fit list you could probably argue he's best 22 at the moment.

He's been a little disappointing after coming back from the injury/illness no doubt, i see a player that possesses some elite qualities he's quick of mind and has tremendous awareness in and through congestion, he's decision making is right up there just his disposal efficiency letting him down at times atm.
He's a silky smooth player with wonderful evasiveness who has the ability to become a key player in setting up a strong midfield group, he'll be midfielder down the track but until he matures he'll be part of our rotations most likely forward and wing.
Personally i think he has serious upside, wait til he hits the 80-100 games mark👍
If he decided he wanted to go home Cerra would be the only player I'd be asking for...

Think he's suffering from the same issue SPS was for a few months - taking too long trying to find the "best" option, and missing out on good ones in the meantime. Just seems to be holding onto the ball a little too long and putting himself under more pressure in the process.

Needs to trust his instincts more and pick up the pace, will come good soon enough.

Yep they are desperate.

Had a read and they seem to have a few actual ITK's who have credibility from previous rumours, but none of them have said Cogs to Hawthorn...only randoms like Nash88.

One of them did say that Cogs 'had informed Carlton of his decision' mid last week, which seems to line up with the timeframe where a lot of our ITK's suddenly posted rumours suggesting Cogs was coming.

You would think if that decision was Hawthorn, the Hawks ITK would have said so.

Agree re their desparation. One minute its how they run a closed shop and then next you have their coach trying to appeal with statements about they could win a flag if Coniglio comes to them - but they still run with CLarkson wouldn't do it unless he knows!! As for Nash, the ****head just reads this and then uses information from our board to sound like he knows what he is talking about (eg BLues have Martin, Grey and after Papley) -its hilarious to see their dumbass supporters treat Nash like some sort of messiah, and he's lapping it up. He will be gone for all money if Coniglio doesn't go to them. I have no idea where he is headed, and nor do those w***ers over there.

TDK was identified and selected as Kreuzer’s long term replacement.
Good judges say TDK has what 2mP hasn’t ... if you know what i mean 😉
Cameron would be the bridge and might just surprise in his own right.
No room or need for Wright up forward with our big 3 and an improving Silvagni.
Use what resources we have to secure what we need.

It's not just the forwards, RB - Levi is proving a more than capable full back as well. Marchy is injury-prone, Weiters is still developing, Jones is a bit of a rollercoaster (more good than bad though). Behind them, without Levi, we've got Goddard, Macreadie, BSOS...

You wanna know how many games we had all three of Jones, Marchbank and Weiters available this year? 7. Less than a third of the season.

Combine it with the forwards - you know how many games all 6 were available? 1. A single, solitary game in which all 6 of our "first choice" talls were available. And you know what...Levi played that game too.

In fact, bar the first two rounds of the season, Levi has played every game. Opportunity through injury, perhaps, but it would appear he was, and is, well and truly in the club's plans.

I'm not saying Levi is critical to the list (though it might not be far off the mark), and if a suitable trade was offered I'd certainly be open to it - but throwing him in as steak knives in a trade for Martin is, quite frankly, an insult to his value as a player. He's first picked to cover for an injury/suspension to Jones, Marchbank, Weitering, Curnow, McKay, McGovern, and depending on what we do with our ruck stocks could be first in line behind Kreuzer as well. The flexibility he offers, without any significant loss of quality, is hugely valuable to a side like ours.

I wonder if Daisy wasn't renewed because of our intention to play Jack Martin across HBF.

I know he's a dynamic forward/flanker, but his kicking skills and game smarts could be utilised there (and SPS pushes back into mid).

Would prefer to keep SPS down back and pop Martin on a wing.

Jack has genuine skills in the air, and is a player I'd back in to win a one-on-one contest going down the line. Also has genuine pace and loves to go for a run with the ball, and weights his kicks really nicely to the advantage of forwards.

Samo's agility, composure and vision are much better suited to his new defensive role, allowing him to extract the ball from congestion and move the play forward. Also lays some strong tackles which come in handy in the defensive 50.

Jack Martin is fine asset anywhere we choose to place him, midfield, defence or forward line a quality footballer no issues whatsoever, if we snared him close to the suggested cost he’d be n absolute steal.

Daisy decision has got to be related to Martin (financial at least).

Question is can Martin defend ?

I would leave SPS in that defensive role as he can tackle, smother, run & carry, kick it well and plays with desperation.
