Ofcourse I’m saying a quality one and not a B-C grade one?? I thought that was obvious.

Ollie Wines is A grade

I wonder if Petracca is available, looks like he needs a change. If Russell could get him up and about would be good for 50mid/50fwd

When does Petracca play midfield?

I don't see Wines as an A-Grader - Cripps, Dangerfield, Fyfe, Martin, Neale....but not Wines.
The term gets bandied about somewhat loosely, but ask Port whether they see Wines as an A-Grader.
Reckon most would be thrilled to net the two first rounders for him, that we somehow seem to be willing to let go for him.

Rockcliff accumulates ball and is bash and crash, but who'd want him?

There's no one way to get the job done and we do need/did need a quality inside/outside mid, but we don't need one if they're not particularly good.
Not Rockcliff, not Powell-Pepper and for me given what we may have to give up....not Wines.

Fair points, but Wines is a different package than Rockliff. Much better contested/clearance player. Rockliff relies on a lot of marks and sideways rubbish to accumulate his numbers.

Purple's sliding doors today:

IF Ollie Wines is indeed gettable...
THEN the Dees should take a close look.

Do you even ******* watch footy, Damo? One of their glaring issues is their midfield being dominated by relatively one-paced, mostly inside type mids, to the extent that there's even some people floating the idea of moving one on. Why the **** would they exacerbate that even further by trading for Wines? Especially as Port may want pick 2 involved cause 20 ain't gonna cut it and Freo probably want that for Langdon.

Did have a laugh that he effectively wrote nothing for Freo... actually finishes his THEN bit with But I've got nothing under the Dockers headline this week.

Wines is different but I just don't see him being the difference for us.
Anyway, I've got stuck talking about Wines and am now simply repeating myself. Best to find someone else to talk about :)

Yeah...I read that and thought the same.
Don't think that Melbourne people will be looking at that and thinking - 'Wow! he has a point there.'

. . . but what Barrett means is simply:

IF

Carlton snare Wines or other potential handy mids (and bloody hell it seems possible)

THEN

I must do my bit to stop Carlton by encouraging others (Gil, please? Anything? Thanks x)

Yep, I think we need another big body in the midfield. Wines would be fantastic.

Besides Cripps we don’t rly have anyone, would say Dow, Setters, Walsh etc are those bash and crash. Stocker may be that guy but still think we need one more.

Does anyone still think Kennedy could be that guy?

Finals footy is all about contested ball
I think we will see a different Kennedy after pre season being a lot fitter and will be more than handy running through the guts.

Dow is the guy, huge pre season coming up

I guess the counter argument is Rockliff can play forward and tag while Wines is a bit more one dimensional in that he's basically a pure contested/clearance on-baller.

That was still old school messiah mentality, factually it just continued the yo yo seasons

Do think the Judd deal was ok -

Masten (average) Notte (terrible) Kennedy (elite in recent years especially)< Judd (club credibility lifting, Brownlow Medal, finals winning)

otherwise: the messiah yo yo years could return if we trade for Yeo and his brother Corey (who plays in the WAFL for Perth)!

Elliott missed his opportunity to have a stadium named after himself “Yeo Gabba Gabba”
. . . hope that doesn’t spark another kids 📺 chat!

I see this also, bit was somewhat disappointed for the year he put up, even for not having a pre-season.
Dows legs are huge but he does need to build up the top half of his frame.

Hard to say what the ideal midfield looks like, as it really is only one part of the whole but a Cripps, Dow, Walsh/SPS/Setterfield combination excites me.
Throw in a Fisher, Stocker and whoever else we may recruit, the balance/blend starts to look pretty good by way of strength, speed, smarts etc.

And that is fair enough

IMO from what we were to where he singlehandedly got us on the field and off it, I’d do it again in a heartbeat and thrice on sundees

Me too mate. Easiest decision ever. Now you add what he’s bringing off the field it’s prob only decent decision club made in that era.

Administration wasn’t ready to bottom out backthen... imagine Wayne Hughes in charge of a full rebuild!! so if we didn’t get Judd the dream of the haters was that somehow Kennedy and Gibbs/Murph and the draft somehow turn us round earlier... I don’t subscribe to that at all. We were blessed to get the great man.

It’s all come together perfectly now though and glad he is still around .

I’m not as big on Dow as some but he is a very good clearance player and Stocker was also known for it and is built for “crash and bash” type stuff. As I said earlier WC lost the clearances last night even though Nic Nat was unbelievably dominant. Swap those ruckman around and Essendon would’ve murdered them in the stoppages and still easily lost the game.

I think this is why Wines would be a great addition. Because we have an absolute superstar in Cripps, but we rely on him winning 10 clearances a game. If we get Wines - a very good, but more limited player - I think we play Wines almost in the "primary" inside mid position, tell him to go a million miles an hour, and we see Cripps move into more impactful, hybrid roles. Arguably all of Dangerfield, Bontempelli, Martin (and Cotchin too) have become better players and their team better once they weren't always playing as #1 pure-possession midfielder. I bet Fyfe wishes he had more help.

Of course Cripps' "1-wood" (to use the parlance of our times) is still inside work, but I bet he'd relish starting 1-out in the goal square sometimes, or getting more time on the bench, or being able to switch out to a "gentler" role for periods of games.

Just a thought. Agresta said it, can't have too many good players. I think help in there would be great, and whilst Wines (or similar) may not have versatility, it might allow Cripps to shine even brighter with his. Would be pretty luxurious to be able to send a fresh Cripps into the middle for a "must-win" clearance, right?

I was happy to give up Pick 1 (Walsh) to get Shiel last year.

After watching last night, thank **** I don’t manage our list.

Haha, we all have those moments. But it's a good thing to remember, sometimes, that it's possible we have no honking idea whatsoever what we're talking about! :D

Shiel has a lot of good qualities, but gee... his disposal is BAD. Worse than I thought. He's probably also trying to do too much in a team that is not capable of meeting the expectations placed upon it.
