Considering the moving parts in the Pap trade, should we be making a decent offer to Jamie Elliot? Would be a risk with his injury history but a free hit, and if all we achieve is running his price up at the pies it might force a player out next year when they are re-signing Grundy.

I still want Betts regardless though...

Yeah he's a gun when up and running, 500k should be enough to get him to leave the pies and theoretically fills one of our greatest needs

This all day everyday.

Jamie Elliott is a gun, fragile at times I accept but a risk worth taking on at the right terms as a free hit on the trade front. Dangerous when the ball hits the turf, elite as a small marking forward and he works hard enough at pressuring the opposition when his team doesn’t have the ball.

Betts to me is a no brainer if we don’t get Papley, which is the most likeliest result,as long as it’s no more than say pick 60 and a reduced contract or crows part pay.

Pick up a Mal Rosa type for late 2nd early third and have Betts mentor him.

It does matter because we only have a finite amount of resources to use.

If we could put some numbers to it, let's say Tomlinson is ours if we pay him $650k over 4 years. Let's also say he would improve our team but only marginally on what we already have, like a 5% upgrade.

Versus using that money upgrading lang/deluca to papley, resulting in a 50% upgrade etc.

There's more to list management than just putting together the best list you can in terms of good players. There is a balance and you need to recruit for needs.

Using that example, which I agree in part with, you fail to include that Tomlinson is acquired via free agency where Papley will cost imo pick 8 as a minimum, both will be on roughly the same wage.

Tomlinson might be offered $650,000 somewhere but what if our offer is $600,000, or just similar in terms n value, might be lower?

He might be a 5% improvement on the player he replaces, but that player, pushed out of his position by To linson, can then hopefully push out Lang or Deluca, thus getting another % gain.

There is more to it, than just how much better Tomlinson is, than the player he replaces.

Your searching for an elite Harker , but they command a price , a princely one at that. Not sure that Paply is elite but certainly a step in the right direction,
I wouldn’t trade away more than either 2919 or 2020 1st rounder and I’d be expecting something in return.

Not elite at all.
Would we be the only team that currently doesn't have a small/medium forward capable of kicking a goal? Could be close.

It's clearly an area we've neglected and somehow 'hoped' that LeBois may have been the one. (Three years on the list suggests we had faith in him.)
Anyway, that's now history but the problem is that you can't just pick and choose the fruit when it suits you, so maybe somewhere along the line, we made a few List Management mistakes and it may cost us a little more, to fix them up.

I don't get the Papley hype.

Granted I haven't seen allot of Sydney this year, but he didn't make the AA top 40 and hasn't done much until this year. I understand you pay overs for under contract, but I just don't want to pay overs for the sake of it. I think Sam Gray could do a similar job and would cost us alot less.

Just worried he will turn out like after Brock Mclean..

You said it yourself you haven't seen a lot of Sydney this year...and that is obvious considering you think Sam Gray would do a similar job and are also comparing him to Brock McLean.

Watch some Sydney games this year, or even just some Papley highlights, and you'll get the hype.

Yes but Betts is 32 so he meant he will be 33 next season and Simpson will be 36 next season. Burgoyne even older. Age doesn’t matter - it’s whether a player is performing and best 22 or not.

Wasn't there talk around the authenticity of Bett's birth certificate a few years back. I'm sure he's around 43.

What similarities to Brock and Papley share?

Edmund struggling for relevance?

Seems that way. Comes across as an absolutely nothing article/statement.

Wow, who would have thought that different key people at a football club might have differing opinions sometimes that they need to sort out? Like they aren't some kind of collective hive-mind or something?

I know CL knows Ellis from his Tiggy days, but what’s he doing making contact without the consent of SOS (or so it seems)?

Don’t know about too many chiefs at CFC, but it looks like too many egos is the bigger issue

What makes you think Liddle made the contact?

All it says is that he was in contact with Ellis as early as February. Could have been Ellis and his camp reaching out.

This is a whole heap of nothing story.

My guess - either Ellis touched base with Liddle, or Liddle heard Ellis was looking around and touched base to see if it was the case. Agresta (List Manager) and Lloyd (GM of Football) were looped in and were open to discussing it, which makes sense given they'd be keen to line up as many possible acquisitions as possible so that choices could be made. Then at the end of the season as all the various trade scenarios start to come together, SOS (GM of List Management and Strategy) nixes the Ellis pursuit for whatever reason (finances?) because he sees other players as higher priorities.

Nothing there looks off to me. CEO with existing relationship with Ellis is the first point of contact, List Manager and GM of Footy continue the discussion and hash out what would be required to get a potential deal done, GM of List Management and Strategy shelves it because that's his prerogative (to prioritise and strategise list changes).

I think I recall one of the ITK's saying we were running interference on Grundy. Could pushing his price up force someone out of the side like Jamie Elliott who is a free agent at the end of the year? Thinking Fasolo mk II but with much bigger upside.
