Given how much we have invested in youth and the draft, it would be completely counter intuitive of the AFL to knock us back getting solid mature talent through the door on the basis of some “rule”.
If they did we might query a suite of assistance provided to the Gold Coast.

It’s really not that difficult, pick 9 is worth Gaff but pick 9 is not worth Papley.
Gaff is A grade and therefore worth a top 10, if not more and Papley is not worth a top 10.
I’m not sure how else I can explain my view.
Sometimes I feel people enjoy trading for anyone and anything, for the sake of it.
Thankfully I have faith the club and SOS values our picks and future.

True, but I think you are being a bit disingenuous in bringing it up. You could argue that trading for a 28 year old who will be a free agent next year is trading for the sake of it.

Which rule prevents a player having the option to terminate early at certain point/s? I only see one which prevents one party having the right to extend.

Even though I think it’s extremely unlikely, the only way I can possibly see Us getting Gaff is if...

Gaff deciding he wants to leave and telling West Coast he wants to activate the clause in his contract, and West Coast thinking that it’s best to get our future first round pick to help them satisfy Geelong and help them replace Gaff with Kelly, rather than risk Gaff activating his clause.

But I just can’t see all the above falling into place for us... and I honestly don’t think we will get any big name this year.

Most likely we improve this year to finals contention and then we get a big name to top up for a shot at the flag after that.

I agree it's unlikely, but by the sounds of it it's not impossible.

• Carlton09 saying Gaff will be visiting Ikon Park soon.
• Constant rumours from a few sources of something big brewing in terms of landing a big fish.
• Gaff allegedly had those get out clauses mainly because of his father's health...maybe his health isn't going well and Gaff would like to return for family reasons? The fact he was so close to signing with North shows he's open to a move back to VIC.
• Kelly is OOC and officially nominated WC, after finishing high up in the Brownlow count and even better year than last. Is 2 years younger than Gaff and currently a better player.
• WC need currency and cap space to bring him in and just may be happy to sacrifice Gaff to get it done, especially if they're worried he'd leave in the next few years anyway.

All needs to align, but sounds plausible to me.
