Bluemour Melting Pot XXI - Like seriously, the polar ice caps have got nothing on us

Doesn't look good if we gave up on other targets to pursue them. If we had no other targets and stuck firm with our offer, no harm, no foul.

Nobody can deny that we agreed to pay overs for Papley as a contracted player and that Gold Coast were playing silly buggers for an unproven uncontracted player.

Just hope Papley and/or our other targets next year aren’t spooked by the deal not getting done, and that we take more due diligence in what is required (and what other deals must topple) at the trade table before we go public.

There were many posts from our ITKs saying it wasn’t reliant on a Daniher deal getting done. I know things change really quick but the Swans are a reasonable club and they seemed willing to deal. Just hope there was no stone left unturned, he is really what we need.

Don't know why people keep mentioning Butler, Cutler and Bonar. Clearly the club didn't have any interest in them. If we did they would likely be Carlton players tonight.

I guess Brisi if we can't improve the top 6 on our list with premium picks as we've tried over the past 2 seasons and failed .
We should IMO be trying to improve the bottom end of the list therefore creating more depth each year .
Our list is still carrying some sub par and project players so a bonar cutler and butler at inexpensive cost is a worthwhile investment IMO .
I think the sign of a good list in AFL is also having a strong reserves side of which we don't .

They’d have to agree to delist by a date. As they did last year with Lyons. If they don’t he has to run the luck.

Not sure what GC do now really. They simply can’t redraft him. Would be insane. Equally doing nothing would be odd.

If they are real pricks they will look to do a deal with Melbourne. Melb would have to be happy that he’d want to go there. But maybe they go after 8 for 15 and 20. Gift them Martin.
Pick 15 and 20 in the psd? He won't nominate for the national draft

Can’t have that TODN.
Papley is worth pick 9/10 in this draft every day of the week.
If we didn’t lay down 9 straight up for Papley in the circumstances it’s inexcusable and will be duly noted by many going forward ...

Opinion mate. Not one footy scribe said Papley was worth Pick 9.

Swans said they weren't trading him regardless without bringing in Daniher so our offer is moot.

Word was we wanted the Zac Jones pick back (32 in the end). Not a big deal really.

Keep going on about Plan B to Z; tell us how you’d convince a player and their management to “sit tight” and see whether our priorities fall over, before committing and agreeing to terms with them?

Learn from the first year Saints guy, set a deadline and if not done move on... don’t wait till the last hour and expect multiple things to fall in line.

Not sure that i follow, how does GC doing any deal with Melb, make Melb be anymore likely to get Martin in the PSD?

For me it is like this. There are a lot of things in this you can’t control. It is not an easy business. That said this was going to be the beginning of our destination club year. We had two quality players who chose us and we couldn’t get it done. To walk away from this trade period with Betts and a list clogger is a fail.

I'll play the butler game.

We should have traded for him along with papley and Martin? Or do we tell him, we will only take you if either or both of papley and Martin fall through?

I'm sure he would tell st Kilda to wait for Carlton before agreeing to play for them......

As long as Polson is on our list, as long as we are not certain of getting Papley and Martin and as long as Betts is still turning 34 next year then yes we should’ve still got him imo.

And a fair chance with Martin........and papley was unavailable.........

Butler would’ve played 22 games for us this year.

That's an impressive set of alternate timeline crystal balls you've got there. Best of all, you can never be proven wrong.

You know that Papley would have kicked 6 goals in 11 games and been dropped to the VFL next year if we traded for him. Dodged a bullet. All hail SOS the oracle.

So, so true.

SOS’s negotiating skills have got us to where we are.

Have to play the “long game”.

It’s difficult dealing with people who renege on deals.

SOS will be sure other List Managers know what happened - Karma bus will catch up with them.

Only criticism I would have is he should have locked away Butler early as insurance.

We may get Martin for free - time will tell on that one.
Completely with you on all fronts.

Yes - we should have taken Butler 3 days ago as insurance with Papley and Martin still on the boil.

IMHO - just because Martin is indigenous does not make him a small forward!

He is a half forward/wing/half back.

Papley can play the half forward/mid plus small forward.

Blues were done over.

Deals were agreed to, then reneged upon and more, much more was sought for both Papley & Martin.

Last night Dodoro was offered pick 9, next years 1st and 2nd by Swans, who were going to seek AFL approval to enable deal to proceed or obtain a future 2nd as part of other deals.

Dodoro has shafted a family member of Essendon royalty who wanted to leave Melbourne for relative anonymity in Sydney.

AFL complicit in the shafting we received by the Gold Coast Suns, told they needed to flex their muscle and harden up.

SOS didn’t fail, at this point he hasn’t delivered the players but he also didn’t overpay.

Very obvious many in here have never been involved in a commercial negotiation of any significance.

Puts hand up as someone involved in commercial negotiations (it’s my job).

I’m happy no deal was going to be done for Papley if demand without Daniher trade was greater than pick 9.

But our key missing piece is a small forward besides a short term fix in Eddie.

My question are we getting a small forward this year that is better than Butler, to take the pressure off Eddie?

if the answer is no I’d be asking serious questions about SOS and Agresta’s strategy.

Also OR is there internal pressure on why we aren’t landing the big fish?

Swans said differently after it all finished.

Bring on draft day now. I hope we take best available and not just a small forward because it’s what we need with pick 9

The only loser here is Gold Coast. SOS loves the elite end of the draft, and his career so far as list manager at Carlton has been characterised by bringing in highly competitive kids in bulk through the first round, so why would he waiver on Martin?

We may have earmarked our first round pick to be used on a high caliber player, but we didn’t, so SOS will again comb this year’s prospects and bring in the next Weitering or McKay or SPS.

If we miss out on Martin because of Gold Coast’s bravado so be it.

Yep, 100%. People need to read/listen to what Craig Cameron said. Anything but the best of picks wouldn’t be accepted. For an uncontracted player.

Sydney situation was different. They were getting headbutted by Essendon and weren’t in the mood to let Papley go the other way. It seems they were very open about it all from the beginning and I can understand their stance.

No way in a million years is Martin worth R1 Pick.

GCS are now like spoilt little kids.

Have picks coming out their ears.
