Do you know enough to elaborate on the concept of restraint of trade? Did the GC show a restraint of trade by not trading Martin when a fair deal was offered or would they face a restraint of trade if they picked up Martin in the PSD if he openly stated he didn't want to go there?

How does it work?

The latter is a situation the AFL have never wanted put to the test.

We threatened it with Thornton and Russell one year, but they both ended up re-signing voluntarily.

He was up for grabs for anyone really. We wouldn’t commit to him.
Sorry HavUEvaSeenTheRain, I think you may be making that up....it was never stated anywhere he was up for grabs for anyone and we wouldn't commit.

Like any player who is searching for a new home, he was more than likely exploring his options, and ultimately chose St Kilda. That doesn't mean he was up for grabs for anyone.

As much as I also find it hard to understand, not every player wants to come to Carlton....

Opinion mate. Not one footy scribe said Papley was worth Pick 9.

Swans said they weren't trading him regardless without bringing in Daniher so our offer is moot.

Word was we wanted the Zac Jones pick back (32 in the end). Not a big deal really.

I’ve already posted that if we offered 9 and Sydney refused, we live with it.
You are right, it’s only ever anyone’s opinion but there are many here on this board that did value Papley at 9 and i value their opinions re Carlton far higher than the majority of the lazy unresearched footy scribes with their snouts in the trough.
If we didn’t drop pick 32 coming back from the equation in the end and just offer 9 flat out i do consider it a big deal.
When you court a contracted player and have them publicly nominate you, you are morally bound to do everything reasonably possible to get the deal done.
Pick 9 for a contracted Papley was not unreasonable.
If we failed to offer 9 in the end it will no doubt be noted going forward by players and managers alike.

Can't find links right now, but I seem to recall some reporting that GC president Tony Cochrane was pushing the hardline stance on Martin, and that the Swans board were similarly involved re Papley. Could be that the list managers in each case had specific marching orders or were simply overruled.

On the other hand, * don't seem to have anyone to blame but Dodoro.

It’s a long held theoretical point. Many good lawyers believe if any player challenged the draft and trade system in court they’d win on the basis it is a restraint of trade. Ie: at the end of your contract you’re a free agent - just like any other employee in any other industry.

Because of that noise the Afl doesn’t like uncontracted players being held captive. A world where Martin chooses to leave GC after 7 years only to be forcibly returned there is a disaster for the AFl.

Just won’t happen.

How many knees have they done between them?
3, so as many as Patton. Ahern did the double, Bonar did the one and had to get it re-grafted, ie. the surgeon done goofed.

They’d be playing Northern Blues next year
Ahern's played 32 games in the last two seasons for North, including 18 at AFL level. Would have had ample opportunity to appear for us as much, perhaps more so.

Bonar is more of a potential pick, but his best is elite. The issue with him is his development as a stoppage player, but I'd be happy to have him rotating between the wing, the forward line and stoppages, similar to Setterfield.

Better for us than Kennedy, and puts pressure on Jack and McGovern.

Holy shit, now we failed because we didn't recruit a Richmond reserves player.
I said Butler would’ve played 22 games this year and I think this because we played Gibbons, Lang, De Luca and even Kennedy in this role. Is Butler a better player than Gibbons, no, is he a better small forward, yes.

Butler kicked 30 goals and was a premiership player in 2017 and is behind Cartagena and Rioli in the pecking order. He’d walk into our 22 because we have nothad a genuine small forward in years.
