Jack Martin's manager sounds like he's leaning towards skipping the ND and going straight to the pre-season draft. Confirms Martin will not be returning to Gold Coast, wants out because he believes his potential wasn't realised at the Suns and believes he can realise it elsewhere. Manager has also confirmed Carlton is absolutely still the priority, will be working to put a price on his head that Melbourne can't match.

Melbourne have given him a call and they got a similar response that they gave to Gold Coast in saying Martin is focused getting to Carlton.

Spoke highly of Carlton's culture and Martin's association to Paddy Cripps, the support and resources we have in relation to indigenous programs/culture. Martin asked if Eddie was coming.

Im hoping eventually clubs have control over players for the first 4 or 5 years before players become free agents, just like most other sports in USA. If clubs want to trade them, ship them off. Time for players to stop being babies and do your 4 or 5 years penance before getting the big $$$$

The old 'players wont agree to it' argument.....well stiff shit. Introduce it from a certain year (those already playing can be on the old rules, within 10 years most will be under the new rules), any player drafted from that year onwards agrees to the terms. Don't like it, don't sign on to be an AFL player.
Impossible within an Australian context. You'd see things go to the courtroom the second a player was being forced to a trade against their own wishes, with the backing of the PA behind them.

America has differing labour laws in place, and a different set of precedents surrounding restraint of trade. An Australian courtroom would have a field day the second such a rule was challenged.

Martin's manager seems a decent bloke. Listening to Andy and Bob..
sounds like it's all nutted out, and no way he is going back to Suns.
But Barrass already told us this. :D :p
they LOVE us.
Giving us a big rap.:):)

Might need to have a read of the regs - I'm not sure if a player can stipulate a salary for the ND. PSD, yes, ND, not sure.

Update: Yes.

A Player, (other than a first year draft choice Player or such a Player in his second year), may specify in the nomination lodged pursuant to Rule 6.2(c) the Football Payments which he will require if he is selected at a Draft Selection Meeting.

Same deal as the PSD, but it's a fixed two year contract.

However it does open it up to every other club with a pick prior to the selection we want to take him with. Easier to go the PSD, which we wouldn't otherwise use, and where he only needs to get past GC and Melbourne. I don't think Melbourne would take him, odds are we'll have a discussion with them, as will Martin's manager, and a handshake agreement will be reached where (if necessary) we agree we owe them a discreet favour down the line.

We don't have to offer a two year contract to Martin. We can offer one year, then negotiate after it. Martin is bound for two years, unless we trade or delist, he doesn't have to sign for two years initially.

I predict this is how it will play out.

Yeah I understand all that and to me its all bullshit (courts will disagree with me)

Ha, nothing wrong with getting a bit emotional

Have you seen the SOS interview, the Angresta interview? They're over the moon... And the media reports? Albeit with limitations, they're not wearing rose-coloured glasses - champ - and they're all reporting a shithouse trade period for the once mighty CFC
... which is different from how they usually report our trade periods/drafting how exactly?

'Carlton is shit' sells a lot of ad space. I've said it before, and I'll say it again; who gives a Mighty Mc'Guffin what people are saying about us? Do what we need to do, work our arses off, reap the rewards and the acolades when they're due. Don't expect the easy friends to jump on board before you've done anything of worth.

So was the whole GCS strategy about posturing in a pathetically stage managed (AFL endorsed) farce to send a message about being tough on those wanting to exit the failed franchise?

Ablett, May, Lynch, Prestia no worries.....but hey lets make a statement against Jack 'dropped to the NEAFL, didn't make GCS top 10 B&F' Martin leaving :)

It's not impossible, just improbable at this stage. Players are not paid enough to provide for that sort of system.

MLB major league draftees get 250k - $1mil dollar signing bonuses and $1 mil a year base salary as 18-21 year olds. They are then locked in for 5-7 years once they are on the active roster and play where they are told to play. They get no say in trades. Their salaries are subject to arbitration after year 2 or 3 so the MLB decides their pay. Not the club.

It could definitely happen in AFL, just not viable yet.

A pretty good day for us following a pretty flat night last night.

First Papley's manager quoted, praising us and saying we did all we could do...

Now Martin's manager saying still focused on getting to Carlton, won't be playing for GC next year and, most importantly, has already told Melbourne thanks but no thanks...

We talking ND or PSD?

I confess, I stopped reading after I gotten past the meat of it. It seemed to suggest that an ND draftee was bound to a 2 year contract, while the PSD could be anywhere from 1 up.

Effectively, the player outlines the contract value, and by nominating for the draft they agree to play for a club who are prepared to meet it, and by selecting the player a club agrees to meet the stated terms.

Minor league players barely earn anything and get traded everywhere (sure some get signing bonuses but most don't)

Typical Australian sports want all the best bits of free agency without the bad bits, and typical AFL allow it without thinking how it works

Both.

ND contract is 2 years only for new draftees.

PSD Martin can nominate for 1 year. He just can't play at another club in year 2 unless he is traded or delisted. It's to prevent a player club hopping each year for the $$$ as what occurs in the state comps.

We offer him a juicy 1 year deal. We offer him a nice long term deal immediately after he is included onto our list.
