And there you have it. TheRedPill confirms SOS did offer a straight swap of 9 for Papley. He tried...but Sydney didn't bite.
9 is a fair price for Paps. Glad SOS didn't offer more than that

It's not impossible, just improbable at this stage. Players are not paid enough to provide for that sort of system.

MLB major league draftees get 250k - $1mil dollar signing bonuses and $1 mil a year base salary as 18-21 year olds. They are then locked in for 5-7 years once they are on the active roster and play where they are told to play. They get no say in trades. Their salaries are subject to arbitration after year 2 or 3 so the MLB decides their pay. Not the club.

It could definitely happen in AFL, just not viable yet.
... which is not a clause or set of clauses that would be stable or legal within an Australian context. There are jobs/industries in which such a thing can be argued as an exception to Australian workplace laws - mining, for example - but the business needs to make the case to government as to why such an exception needs to be made. If not, they are subject to precisely the same laws governing restraint of trade and contracts as everyone else.

Until I see Jack Martin smiling in a Carlton polo shirt, I’m not believing anything.

Still a small organisation called the AFL that will surely attempt to meddle in this one.

It’s their hobby team ffs
Nah the won't want to deal with the AFLPA.

Sydney actually did bite, that's why they included pick 9 in the offer to the scum

DODO had unrealistic expectations of what JD is worth
Only on planet Dodo is JD worth more than 2 first rounders.

Forgive me for being less than confident unless we see Martin in navy blue after the psd. No high fives just yet.

Please don’t tell me it was the plan all along. If it is I dare say not too many will nominate us knowing we put them and their futures at risk if we smell a less than favourable deal.

Don't worry they say, it’ll get done, well I’ve heard that one before.

Cochrane is “playing the game”.

If Jack Martin wanted to “play the game” after GCS takes him back in PSD?

He plays zero games due to mental health issues & keeps his $1M.

And ends up at Carlton the following year.

“We can all play the game if we want to”.
Happened with McMcarthy when at GWS wanting to be traded Freo. Refused to the play. Redraft at your own peril.

For the benefit of everyone, I detailed how a 1 year deal potentially works for Martin. All in accordance with the Rules.

1. Martin doesn't have to nominate payments. He can nominate as Category 2. He can seek arbitration. Rule 21.
2. Martin can use Carlton's offer during arbitration to obtain a 1 year deal for $800-1 million. Rule 21.4 and 21.10.
3. Melbourne can accept that huge offer, or release him.
4. If Melbourne accepts that huge offer, Martin can refuse to sign with Melbourne, and Melbourne must PAY him for the entire year before trading or releasing him. Even if he doesn't play. Rule 7.8 and 21.2.
5. If Arbitration is somehow unsuccessful, he can seek leave for restraint of trade to be released from Melbourne to accept Carlton's offer. Rule 1.4 and 21.3

All the risk is on Melbourne. For a player who doesn't want to go there. When they potentially have 6-10 uncontracted players seeking new contracts in 2020, and those players are watching the club blow $1 million on a single player, for one year, who again - doesn't want to be there.

We can also offer a whopper 2 year deal. But that has it's own inherent risks under Category 1. Our club will be allllll over this and determine the best process.

Good luck Melbourne.

I don't think anyone's saying taking Martin in the PSD was the plan. SOS offered what he thought was a fair price. It was insinuated by OR that GC reneged in their agreement.

Like GWS the GCS are chasing quality over quantity.

They’re not interested in R2 and R3 picks.

R1 picks or GTFO.......

That’s what happens when Santa visits and over fills your goodie bag.

This. And magnified by the fact that they don’t need to bank points that R2 and R3 picks would yield since they don’t need to bid for their Academy players. AFL never considered that!

Don’t you need to sign players drafted via PSD a minimum of 2 years?
