Have you tried going around to the gates on Bishopsgate St? The only issue with this is that you can't be on the 'private property' part of the facility, which is essentially the stadium fan viewing area. I hung around what looked like the ticketing building for WAFL games to the left of the gates (under the big HJs sign) and at one point was seated on the metal turnstiles in the shed to stay out of the sun. Plenty of workers there but didn't say anything to me. Security guard that asked me to leave the private property area saw me up there and didn't say anything. Only issue is you can't really see what's happening on the outer oval.

So wear fluoro workshirt and fit in .

They also promised better and more frequent content due to having larger and better facilities for their media team/content creators at Lathlain. So far we’ve been getting less than we we did based at Subi. And I thought they were having a club museum?
The only thing there resembling a museum is a (approx.) 1.5m x 10m dead-end corridor running off the wider corridor where you can, sometimes, observe the internal training area. This corridor has some memorabilia from the earlier days. That's about it!

Wednesdays open session was what has become a bit of a Groundhog Day session.

Basic warmups followed by a short kicking exercise that starts as static kick to kick progressing to kicking on a bit of a run and ends with goal kicking practice. This all takes about 15-20 minutes after which the next hour is made up of a series of skill exercises , sometimes in line groups but not always. Nothing competitive and no contact drills.

In short, there’s not much of any real substance to shed light on. Regardless here are a few observations :

• Headcount during warmup ends at 44 so we’re one short (43 listed players plus Reid and Grey as train ons* is 45) Gov is the missing player
* I’m not counting Pickett as a train on. Haven’t seen him for at the last 3 sessions I’ve attended so he’s either pulled the pin or is that out of shape he’s training away from public gaze
• Brander kicking the footy during the initial warmup showing no signs of restricted movement
• Once the first phase is done and the session proper starts Brander, Allen, Reid and Hickey move to the outer oval (mcg) and start running laps
• Vardy, Barrass and Ah Chee who have previously been part of the rehab group remain with the main group
• Allen is running at a slower place than the other rehab players and has a trainer alongside him for company. He’s also running about 10-15m inside the boundary line rather than outside the line like the others. He looks a little proppy in his movements and running less freely than I’ve seen him earlier this year
• Brander doesn’t LOOK injured the way he’s running. Going at a good pace and he would continue running for well over half an hour. Whatever the reason for him being pulled out of main training it would not appear significant
• Forwards are on the opposite side of the oval from where I’m standing but it looks like Webster is coaching that group. That said JK is doing a lot of the instructing as an almost defacto coach
• Oh look there’s Gov (not in normal training gear) kicking a footy with moneill about 10m apart. Did that for maybe 5 minutes which was then him done for the day. Strenuous day for him. Not at all confident he’ll be ready for round 1
• Vardy and Williams with the forwards which is interesting since Jamieson is the only other ruck with Naitanui in the midfield group
• Can’t see Venables anymore. I later see him slowly jogging on the MCG before he disappears for good. Must have been one of those not so good days Simpson has spoken about
• Naitanui, Williams, Vardy, Shuey and Moneill splinter off to do some centre square style work as the main group do a full field ball movement drill
• When they’re done Hickey is talking earnestly to Williams explaining something to him. Given that those two are competing for one spot it’s nice to see the senior player still helping the younger one out
• On the main oval Barrass flies for a mark. He mistimes his leap and ends up on his arse but safe to say he’s pretty much over his surgery. Did the whole session and apart from being horribly left sided by foot he was moving well
• Schofield finished up and just casually signs autographs for a good 15-20 minutes. Genuine man of the people
• Session winds up and almost the entire playing group head towards the fans like they’ve been told this is the last open session before school holidays end
• I get my school teacher daughters nicnat book signed by the big fella himself and walk away happy

Other the progress, or lack thereof, of the players in the rehab group there wasn’t much to be gleaned from today. In summary on the rehab guys -
• Venables is a real worry. He’s physically fit and is actually in good shape but he’s clearly still having ongoing issues with that concussion. Pessimistic about when/if he might return but glad the club is being cautious because he has a long life after football that has to take priority
• McGovern hasn’t progressed from where he was at when he returned from the Christmas break. If anything he’s regressed in terms of the amount of work he’s doing
• Allen also looks to be taking longer than anticipated in his recovery but is ahead of Gov
• Hickey doesn’t look far away from a return to full training
• Brander appears like they’ve taken a precaution, perhaps due to his previous soft tissue injuries, and it doesn’t look significant
• Barrass and Ah Chee look to be all but over their respective ailments

My preference is to be between the two ovals as that way I can keep an eye on both. It’s hard enough as it is to keep track of players as it is without ruling out one oval

It means watching through the fence at closed sessions but it’s under the ample shade of those giant Moreton bay fig trees so it’s not too bad

These posts have really whetted my appetite for more discussions about inventory management, minimalist design theory and the nuanced local politics of playground maintenance - but, just as asides, did anyone go to the ******* training and can we get a read out?

I’m disappointed with the lack of news about Pickett ..It wouldn’t surprise me to hear he’s had some sort of injury setback ..
But if it doesn’t work out for Pickett, I would be happy enough to try Reid out on the rookie list ..

Venables struggles with injury throughout his career and now heavy concussion really are a constant source of disappointment.

Had high hopes for him this year, particularly if he can get through pre season unscathed. It's his 4th season now, and not looking good.

Once again, great effort! I used to go to training regularly and cant go now so it's good to have updates.

Is this make or break for DV? He's out of contract this year. Through a combination of factors we've got very little return from him. If he wasn't such a high pick I'd think he was facing a spell on the rookie list. More concerning is he might decide it's time for a fresh start back home.

It is maybe too early to speculate so wildly but it's one to keep an eye on as the season unfolds. Really hope he gets a good run at it this year and gets over his concussion symptoms.

Ashton was a midfielder played forward at AFL , Reid looks an xfactor forward so could surprise and be a handy player , Jarrad Humphries from Bunbury with the Beagles this season hopefully does well and can considered in the future also but have to wait and see .

Reid could be a Puopolo type player I reckon..
