So, when my 50+ year old work colleague starts dressing in leather and telling everyone he is going to be a music star and all the big music names are calling him up wanting to record with him. When he starts buying cars and shit he cannot afford and getting neck tatoos because he is a huge celebrity, I shouldn't worry, it's just a scam.

I am a bit confused by who is doing the scamming, is it him? And who is he scamming?

I don't see how it's the medical industry, because they didn't get involved until after he admitted himself, when he realised he had lost touch with reality.

Instead of a scam, maybe it's just much harder living in our own skins than has historically been recognised? The pressure to conform to any ol standard that doesn't fit the way your psyche, brain, soul etc is held together ain't good for mental health. I sure as heck wouldn't have coped presenting as a man in Louis XIV's Paris, that's for sure, but I cope alright in a flanny.
