Ainsworth was a bizzare pick in a lot of ways. I know a lot of players around him are not much better (Worpel was the one we were kicking ourselves over but he’s still a bit average), so quality wise maybe we didn’t miss out on much, but he’s such an odd one out when it comes to the way we want to play.

He’s a poor mans Redden. Not really the Priddis type build to just be able to park yourself in the centre all day but can’t really kick either so can’t trust him to be a playmaker on the outside. Just doesn’t have any stand out traits and even moreso no traits that are valuable to our gameplan.

It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me what he’s actually supposed to be doing. If he’s just filling space on the field then you’re better off with Brander as a point of difference, or even Jetta. If Jetta got the ball 7 times you can guarantee they’d all be quality possessions. Not just cheap handballs or backwards kicks.

Compare that to someone like O’Neill, who looks like he’ll slot straight into Shueys place eventually, Ainsworth is a bit of a nothing pick. I think I did read somewhere that we were keen on Fritsch, who went to Melbourne the pick earlier, he would’ve been pretty handy as a half forward/winger who is good aerially.

Ainsworths' plus side prior to the draft was his ability to get the pill. So far he's had zero opportunity to play that role and has been learning his outside craft at WAFL level.

My main concern is there seems to be no effort in bulking the kid up so he can actually play at the coal face without getting murdered.

Whooo there.

I recall seeing several times Ainsworth pushed a quick, aggressive handball and kick inside the corridor to players running hard forward and hit the target.

So don't pigeon hole his entire game into being 'cheap backwards kicks and handballs".

In fact saying that backwards handballs or kicks are cheap is also wrong, it depends on the circumstances.
Are you talking about his previous games earlier this year?

Surely you aren't talking about the Collingwood game?

Very good points. If you're looking for a space-clogger, put Jetta on. At least he'll spear the pig skin onto the tit of a steam-training kennedy.

We've gone from focussing on a funny looking ball drop that has been proven to have no real effect on disposal efficiency, to one average kick. That I'm pretty sure didn't result in a turnover or anything, the recipient just had to work to gather it. boo freaking hoo. Happens all the time to everyone.

I want Ainsworth to succeed just for this ridiculousness to stop. Number one contested player in his draft year, would like to see him in the guts at some point, but at this stage, that would mean injuries to Shuey/Yeo/Kelly and no one wants that.

No, I'm talking about a player who had 2 kicks, stuffed one of them up and went for negative meters.

The previous game had 7 kicks and gained 107 metres.

Nothing ridiculous about the criticisms at all.

At his stage, he has not shown me one glimpse that he is AFL standard.

"Why do we always draft guys who aren't mids. Why cant we get guys that are proper midfielders"

WCE draft Ainsworth

"Why did we get Ainsworth?"

Good old Bigfooty

I think the gripe is that we tend to use our earlier picks on picks that are not true midfielders, but we hope maybe they could transition into one someday

Ie, Duggan and Cole as half-backs
Venebles as a half forward
Etc

By the time we get to picking actual midfield guys like Ainsworth, the talent pool is really fairly low/speculative

We need to spend the next few years at the draft using our early picks to select genuine, quality, proven midfielders

He's mostly been playing backwards of centre, a pseudo-Masto role, so has been switching the play, which would account for low metres gained.

Have the players he's kicked it to been in a better position to gain metres?

It's hard to tell because he's hardly getting a kick.

At least you got some run and carry from Masto.

I'd just like to see a glimmer of something from him that's all.

Number one contested player in his draft year
Based on four U/18 carnival games? He had good stats but Jack Higgins had more contested possessions than him. Does that make Higgins the second best contested player in that draft?

I never saw him play as a junior but it’s hard to imagine him being the dominant extractor he was described as. It doesn’t look like he’s put on any muscle since then, but maybe they’ve told him to stay lean until some of our inside players retire and he’s needed to fill that void?

Which would be ridiculous, he should have been using this time to build muscle and learn how to play against bigger bodies in the WAFL.

Maybe he is Notte able to put on muscle.

The problem with mid teen picks is that the top 10 midfielders in the draft are already gone but some of the top 5 or so KPP/Ruck are still around and that is where the value is with the likes of highly talented players like Allen & Grundy still available in recent years.

It’s possible. Jarrad Granted he’s still young but still, he looks pretty ragdollable

Because we had a dominant clearance mid before that couldn’t hit a dump truck 20m away and it seriously limited us. Half of us are scarred the other half are blind.

IF he stays on our list sure I want him to succeed, I just don’t see how he can with a kick like that.

And later picks like the one we used on Ainsworth are even more speculative. And I know Worpel was still available, but he's … also not that great.

I remember a quote from when we picked up YET ANOTHER tall in Callum Jamieson. You either get the 40th best mid in the draft, or the second best ruckman. In a scenario like that, I'd go for the second best ruckman too.

And I still argue you can't look at our drafting in isolation of our trading. Which superior gun midfielder did we miss out when we traded in Redden and Yeo?

Ainsworth is fringe for sure, but I think it's all been a bit over the top.

At least it's moved on from Nelson I guess :straining:

Whats vardys and hickeys contract situations? Article on afl.com has an article about clibs needing ruckmen.we really need to hold onto big bailey so one of or both of these guys need to go.
If its one its obviously vardy but if in contract would another club trade for him?
With our lack of picks even a 4th rounder would be nice[emoji23]

Same article...

Bailey Williams (West Coast)

Has been incredibly close to a debut on several occasions but the Eagles look to have settled on their preferred ruck set-up of Nic Naitanui and pinch-hitter Oscar Allen for now. Williams was edged out for the No.2 spot by Tom Hickey when the Eagles went with two genuine big men to start the season before changing their model. The Victorian is only 20 and has time on his side with a contract until 2022 but rival clubs will be asking the question, knowing the Eagles also have Hickey (2021 contract), Nathan Vardy (out-of-contract) and last year's draftee Callum Jamieson (2021).

I’d say Vardy is gone unless he wants to play WAFL

Tbh I’d rather Hickey out and keep Vardy
