Only error was giving the ball to Newnes, which was understandable given the downfield umpire wasn't expecting a downfield so the Docker went and got the ball, all the players move, then low and behold he has to work out who was closest. Given the mark was set 10m away from Gibbons, Newnes wasn't actually that much further away. Casboult was almost the closest from the other direction. Thank God the ball wasn't given to Levi
Looks like Newnes was further down the ground from the kick than Gibbons, even though the ball went over Gibbons head. Gibbons was in line with the kick and therefore looked closer from the camera behind Doc. Where they ruled it went oob, Newnes was ‘closer‘ to the free kick area in distance from the goal line from the umpires view in the forward 50.

Newnes also had his back to the umpire who would have seen his number, maybe that also influenced the decision.

Hilarious reading the Freo autopsy thread. They are hoping for the AFL to overturn the result 😂 Very conveniently they ignore the two gifts they received right in front of goal in the first quarter...

One poster ranting about SOS kicking their butts in 2001 and then cheating by bidding on Liam Henry and using the PSD to draft players 😂😂😂

I wonder if they remember trying to poach Cam McCarthy and making him sit out the year at GWS, then to top it off they traded away the chance to draft Taranto/McCluggage to get him

Clueless bunch over there
Tell the ****en idiots their blokes made 4 critical mistakes that cost them the game. 1. Taberner didnt take possession instead knocked it out deliberate, free kick 2. Then the idiot didnt stand the mark, Doc plays on kicks it deep 3. then gets knocked over after getting rid of it, free. 4. Not one Freo player went and told the ump the wrong bloke had it. EOS, EAD.

A massive shout out to our “whole team defence” that restricted Fremantle to only 2 behinds from the 8 min mark of the 3rd quarter until the end of the game.

This not only includes the back six, but our mids running both ways, Cottrel and Walsh on the wings getting back to help our defenders etc.
Cottrel and Walsh turned the game with their running. Phenomenal.

Okay - but with no centre bounces what constitutes the midfield in open play? I just rewatched the stoppages in the last quarter, and yes Serong and Brayshaw were at pretty much every one (as were Cripps and Curnow), but so were Walsh and Setterfield.
As Montagna said, Mundy and Fyfe rotated through.
Surprised on a second viewing that Murph was in the thick of it as much as he was.
Side note: Walsh was immense in the last. Seemed to be everywhere. Amazing that he just presents over and over. Was a part of so many chains. Just a brilliant player.

Loved Walsh’s game, he works his arse off and he puts himself in positions to score too, he only needs to work on his composire in some instances.
I didn’t think there was anything wrong in what Montagna said, Freo largely persisted with a younger midfield and we largely relied on a older midfield, which was propped up by an epic game by Ed. He gave credit that we got the win.

Tab was good for them up the ground. Provided a target and stuck a few in very average conditions.

He kicked 3 of their 5 goals too.

Of course he deserves votes.

I'd disagree he gave Wietering a bath or that this is a learning curve.

Tab won the match up for the day, beat Jacob once in the F50 on a 1v1 and was able to get his hands on it.

Basically all there is to it.

So the AFL have ticked off the deliberate call and the down the field call.
They've said nothing about where the kick was taken.
And they've said Gibbons should have taken the kick, not Newnes.

I think the Newnes/Gibbons thing is completely understandable as well. At the time the ball went out of play, off Doc's boot, the umpire would have been assessing which Freo player was closest. 5 seconds later, after the players have all moved around, he finds out it was a downfield free. He can't rewind his vision to see which Carlton player was closest, so he goes with the one who is closest at that point in time. We didn't **** around arguing the point because the siren hadn't gone and we wanted to take the shot as quickly as possible.

Only way the AFL avoids that scenario is to have a video ref judging eeeeeverything. Taberner's frees...nice that the field umpire paid them, but we should probably go to the tape to be sure. Dusty with a high fend-off, field umpire lets it go - but wait, the video ref had another angle and has called the ball back. 60 seconds goes back on the clock and Richmond lose the goal they'd just kicked.

But then the game turns into NFL where it takes 3 hours to get through 15 mins of play.

Mistakes will happen, fans will hate it - but if Newnes had missed, would there be segments on every talk show about how Carlton were ripped off because the umpire should have had Gibbons take the kick? Nope.

Pretty much, but the critical point was that even though Gibbons was closer to the boundary line when the umpire nominated the player, it was Newnes who was closer to where the mark was set.

That's what I saw and that's what I think came about. It's hard to spot, but it is there as Newnes walked towards the umpire.

EDIT: Newnes may actually now be closer to the mark being set than for Gibbons.
The mark was not at the 50 mt line. I can actually understand how the umpire may have got this wrong, given the moment he had to nominate the player.

Was more confident in Jones, thought it would be some kind of message from the universe to have the failed forward turned solid defender come from the clouds and win the game for us with a late goal.
I think Eddie actually flustered him. Jones needed to take his time to compose himself but Eddie pushed for that dodgy handball. After that he was rushed which isn't how you want Jones to be.
