That stuff was well known long before Qanon jumped on board. Qanon is just interference for Trump's relationship with Epstein.
doubtful.

More like interference for those up to no good in Hollywood so the Vals of the world can shout "conspiracy theory." Once that is stuck to something it can be swept under the rug and everyone acts like it's absurd...just like the death of Epstein and chemicals in the water that turn the frogs gay.

I am really starting to think that this and other social media like it are quite possibly some of the farthest reaching worst inventions in the history of human beings.

The sheer amount of disinformation that is out there furthering political or ideological agendas is mind bending. the fact that these platforms play so neatly with the brain chemistry and dopamine production is truly scary. People are addicted to being voyeuristic conspiracy theorists. This thing that Suckerberg created sucks life from people every hour of every day.

When Ruth Bader Ginsberg died I thought to myself well now they are going to have a GOP judge replacing a DNC judge and that this is likely to have an impact upon the more liberal sided SCOTUS precedent cases, Like Roe Vs Wade.

And then I stopped and wondered to myself if I could name a single judge that sits on the high court in Australia. And I couldn't This sent me down a spiral of why is the ever living f*** do I not only know the name of SCOTUS justice, but I know their ideologic stand point and they fact they are likely to be replaced by someone with opposing views. Why TF do I give a s**t about Roe vs Wade. These are things that don't and likely will never effect me.

I’m all over the Epstein “suicide” Joycey. Do you reckon they’ll get Maxwell? I think Chouvin is a good chance to get knocked too, because he won’t get done for murder if it goes to court and the country can’t afford that.

Best and worst. It’s what you do with it that counts I spose.

After Epstein I've all but given up on all that tbh. That was one of the most absurd sagas I've ever heard of. He was whacked like it was some ******* movie plot. And no one battered an eyelid. It is as equally funny as it is horrifying. I'm convinced it was some pilot test to see how easy it was to kill someone in the news and to see how quick the general public got over it.

Good discussion on the process of appointing justices to the HCA and comparison with other jurisdictions including the US here.

I helped my old man with something the other day and couldn't help but notice that he had a s**t tonne of sponsored ads, all of which were propounding the same qanon crap. No doubt they select their target demographic as people of a certain age, certain locations and probably gender, too.

He struggles to discern what's true from what's not and it has caused a discernible shift in his political opinions since he joined social media. My heart actually broke a little bit as I thought back at all the robust debates we've had where he's put forward some blatantly false things that he's convinced are true. It's as close a thing to brainwashing as I've ever seen.

Conspiracy theories were big before Facebook. Even before the Internet.

In the US especially. Ever hear of the John Birch Society? The Protocols of the Elders of Zion? The so called "moon landing".

Yes but they simply spread further and faster through the mechanism of social media.

And that's one of the elements that makes social media so bad.

This is the issue.

I see these ads everywhere. And they are ****ed up. But they are fully programming people to be little nazi campaigners.

"True Brits should worry about this" is one I've seen recently.

I don't use Facebook or other social media beyond here and one or two other anonymous little discussion boards no one has heard of. But these ads are everywhere on Internet Mainstream Media sites. Old and new media.

My own personal conspiracy theory about all this is that the people behind the Heartland Institue and other similar think tanks came across the Micheal Aquino paper I posted upthread and went "Bingo! we never have to answer to another thing again."

As a result American (and large parts of other western societies,) society's ability to understand reality is fundamentally broken. It doesn't matter what reality is, if people are uncertain and confused and have no trusted authority they will revert to forms of tribalism that are easy to take advantage of.

That is the bit the underpants gnomes pretended not to understand. With all the question marks between "steal underpants" and "profit".

It's another version of "make people into mushrooms" ie keep them in the dark and feed them bullshit.

Best and worst. It’s what you do with it that counts I spose.

Or what you allow to do to you.

Issue is as pointed out a couple of posts after yours, some people, in target demographics, don't think anything is actually happening to them and don't understand targeted marketing wearing the clothes of news may not be factual.

The difference now with social media is that it also removes the natural human interactions with people of differing opinions. I mentioned this the other day here. But it is extremely unnatural to have a tool which so easily connects you to people who agree with everything you do.

It's not unheard of before, lots of political parties and vanguards had this issue (and consequent purity spiralling as they found increasingly trivial things to argue over). But the scale of how many people it affects is tremendous. It connects people who reinforce each other's opinion and prioritises them over people who may disagree.

Doesn't take long to find yourself in an echochamber of increasing radicalism.

At least here at bigfooty we came here for our beloved football team. We probably see more genuine disagreement here than anywhere else in our lives because of that.

When all your connection is online - and expanding your connections is weighted by an algorithm of people you'll agree with - it just results in really polarised societies. The only real forced 'natural' connection we have is workplaces - and most people are afraid to voice a political opinion or enter a political discussion there through fear of being fired if someone disagrees.

It’s ****ed up. Everyone knows what they did and just excepted it...whoever ‘they’ are. It’s easier for people not to care because Epstein was a scumbag. But if they’re willing to do him like that with everyone watching..makes me think they’ll do anyone. It’d be so much easier for them to knock off a nobody.

They did it under the microscope. The whole world was watching. TBH the veneer of western/first world democracies don’t do that sort of thing should be finished for anyone. They operate the same as the Saudis who killed that journalist. Except the people of Saudi Arabia know it and except it.

I live in the bush and we socialise the way we have for years. Sitting around a table near the shop drinking beers and smoking the odd scoob.

It helps that all the dickhead rednecks I hang out with might have those poitical opinions but don't bang on about them, and all the anarchist, hippie, greenie campaigner w***ers they hang out with have the same attitude.

But as you say face to face human interactions are different, and despite these political differences we have a lot of other things in common and enjoy each other's company. As a result we are more likely to listen to each other's politics and find common ground than get stuck in that purity spiral (great term too, perfect.)

I know I go off here a bit and that might sem unlikely but it happens and is easy if you've been laughing about something or sympathising and bonding over broken pumps, dickheads from cities, too many coppers the roads, not enough rain or whatever.

There is no room for any of that in most social media.

In the bush people help each other too. Give up their time and resources to help each other out even if we disagree over other things. Cos there is no one else around to do it. Money isn't as important in these situations.

We once had the back axle of the car snap. My missus was driving on her way to work. The tyre came off and rolled down a gully. It's probably still there fifteen years later. That car was back on the road for 75$ and two cartons, within 24 hrs. The 75 bucks was cost price for the parts from a wrecker and the two cartons were my idea. No one asked for anything. Easy to not give a * about people's politics when they'll do that sort of thing to help out.

And it only works cos what goes around comes around again.

That journalist was also the only material witness in a potential class action against Saudi financiers of the 9/11 attacks. Tho most of those people probably met the same fate under MBS.

My old man, approaching his 80’s fairly switched on, traveled the world etc. he has been self isolating since the start of the year. He hasn’t really seen anyone, well apart from FaceTime.
the last convo I had with him, he was talking about one world government/covid/single currency etc.. I was actually quiet shocked, as there would be no way he’d searched for it.
And that was an algorithm talking, and got me thinking, he wouldn’t be the only one in that age group..

As you get older, you start to wish for easy solutions. I know this, as I can feel it happening to me at 65. The world is so complex and we instinctively want black and white answers.

We've become physical hosts for our electronic overlords.

I mentioned Kevin Rudd to a mate in a text the other night. Hadn’t thought about him or talked about him in a decade. Lo and behold, 10 mins later I’m scrolling through YouTube and it suggests a video on him. They are actively listening and stealing our info, it was actually a bit surreal.

"They" aren't even human anymore. That whole process is happening automatically. Bots and AI are doing it all and not even referring to human control in the process.

Check this out...

That experiment is eleven years old. It's a poor article too. There were better ones and the paper a decade ago.

It's interesting that the first emergent behaviour the AI does is lie to hoard resources and throw other robots of the "scent" of food.
