The lay of the land according to AFL.com.au journos:

The Blues have offered Essendon their choice of either pick No.8 or a future first-round selection for Saad, but are refusing to budge from their stance of receiving a second-round pick packaged alongside the Bombers speedster.

As of Tuesday evening, Carlton remains confident that a deal will be completed by Thursday's 7.30pm AEDT deadline. However, Essendon has not yet offered a selection along with Saad that meets the club's demands.

Although both parties had originally anticipated minimal haggling in talks, Carlton is now preparing for the saga to reach the final stages of the Trade Period in the knowledge that other Essendon trades could hinge on a deal for the defender being completed.

Essendon is yet to put forward an offer that has satisfied the Western Bulldogs for contracted midfielder Josh Dunkley and may require a first-round selection from Carlton in order to complete any proposed deal.

There also remains complications in a trade that would see Greater Western Sydney youngster Jye Caldwell join the club, with the Giants determined to land a first-round pick as compensation for the talented midfielder.

A move taking contracted forward Orazio Fantasia to Port Adelaide is also in the balance, with the Power conceding they may have to walk away from the deal if the Bombers do not back down from their original asking price of a first-round pick.

The Power's initial offer of pick No.29 has so far been rejected.

Rival clubs believe a host of deals in this year's Trade Period, including Essendon's own moves for Dunkley and Caldwell, rely on either the Saad or Fantasia trades being completed as early as possible over the coming two days. - Riley Beveridge

Well you have to if you want to draft talls. What's the alternative, get some more plug and play 180cm flankers so we can play them at full forward and bomb the ball on their heads?

Disagree. A stack of skinny talls have played early in their careers lately. If you’re good enough you play. If they take three years to be ready, don’t draft 4 of them in one draft.

There is a very, very real possibility of getting nothing for Saad whilst Fantasia coming back isn't ideal, a likely compo pick is what's on offer this year anyways so non plussed.

The two big ins (Caldwell & Dunkley) would be nice to have shiny new toys but getting them in seems to be a speed hump Adrian can't focus all his attention on at the moment. I'm on record saying that missing both would be fine with me. No worse off than what we have already been.

Getting SOMETHING for Adam Saad is a must!

Saad deal is into haggling over the minor bits.

Relax dude, we're getting a first round pick for Saad, they're just squabbling for crumbs.

I still reckon work out what it'll take from the dogs to get Dunkley, then make it happen with Carlton. If thats 7+8 or 7+Carlton's future 1st, whatever. Its a lot for Dunkley but this is one of those occasions unlike say, Shiel, where i'm actually ok with it.

There’s no real possibility at all that we get nothing for saad. Dodoro would get fired.

I actually reckon getting Dunkley and Caldwell in is more important than getting something for Saad, you just cant have blokes nominate your club and then not pay to get them over, its why the blues should pay, port should pay and we should pay.

If you have people nominate you then you dont pay to get them in players will stop nominating you.

I agree. Pre trade period the narrative was of how poor a position Essendon was in with Saad and Daniher leaving being poor reflections on the club. However Dunkley and Caldwell have basically turned that narrative around completely.

I also think Dunkley in what he brings from a standards and leadership point is huge for us as a club moving forward.
