Wasn't the Japanese plan to ride pushbikes from FNQ southwards as they did on the Malay Peninsula?

If you set out from the tip of Cape York and ride the length of the Malay peninsula I dont think you'll even get to Townsville. It is a very long way.

I don't think marines saved Australia. Ie fought in any battles that mattered specifically from our pov.

Some may say the US didnt even save us, ie we'd have been okay anyway. The whole argument is more complex and nuanced than that tho. Their resources helped. The Battle of the Coral Sea probably clinched the deal, ie made certain Australia was okay. But really any land army invading mainland Australia in the 40s would have its work cut out. Think about how hard it was for the Germans in North Africa which was next door comparatively to SE Australia - where everything important was - from Japan.

The Japanese government was desperately trying to surrender. The Truman administration knew full well that Japan would have surrendered (1) without the need to demolish Hiroshima and Nagasaki together with their inhabitants by atomic bombs and (2) without an invasion of Mainland Japan by my father and his comrades-in-arms.

The Truman administration dropped these two atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in order to make it crystal clear to the Soviet Union and to everyone else around the globe that the United States of America would be in charge of running the World in the post-World War II era. So it has been ever since.

The Imperial Japanese Navy asked the Imperial Army for an invasion force to take Australia, they denied. They were stretched too thin and while they didn't think we had the means to defend ourselves from a full on invasion, the ability to hold such a large land mass with the cities so far apart would have been a logistical nightmare.

They intended to blockade us from reinforcement from the USA and UK and pressure us into surrendering, we really lacked the means to have a wartime economy, we lacked the industrial capacity to produce military equipment fast enough for a war of attrition. Our isolation was our greatest asset.

Japan and Germany were stupid, they didn't coordinate. Thankfully Hitler didn't think too much of Asians along with pretty much anyone else, had they coordinated on Russia it would have been game over.

What’s the go with these? I’m guessing sort of advertising campaign
Surprised at the lack of public details. I suspect a very clever marketing campaign building. Certainly captured plenty of attention.

“Chinese officials have previously claimed to have detected coronavirus on frozen products including chicken wings from Brazil, squid from Russia, shrimp from Ecuador, pork from Germany and salmon from Norway.”

Well I guess it was only a matter of time

Whatever happened to crop circles?.They were all the rage years ago.
I missed this, but basically people stopped making them.

I knew someone who claimed they were part of a crop circle crew in Toronto. A couple of times they would say to look out for one in the news and within a few days one would be found somewhere in Canadia..
