I just think west coast allowing him to play is a soft response to the airport fiascos.

At the minimum they should have said your done for the year. Getting done for a drug related issue whilst serving a drug related ban is beyond dumb

It's the end of the season, the Eagles are having a bad year, they want to get the media stuff out of the way, they need to make list management decisions. Lots of obvious reasons why they would do this.

Picking Rioli is about the individual (in my view) more than the teams season is done. I would suggest the squad support the decision.

when he's had such a bad run of injuries? From purely a fitness and medical point of view - not really. But the mental benefits of knowing he's made it back and can attack a decent preseason are huge.

I see the same kind of thing for Willie. He's back now. Get him a game so he can go in to summer with some confidence.

All his mistakes have come from stupidity and a minor (that becomes a major) issue. I don't think they are the kind of mistakes that can be fixed by a hardline stance. He either does the right thing now or he doesn't.

I also think it shouldn't be an issue for the guys who miss out on games. The Eagles season is done. And Langdon or Petrucelle or whoever misses out has to kind of suck it up and deal with the reality that in form and fitness Willie Rioli

Arguably the best small forward in the team, he's a walk up start any other year without the baggage.

He’s served his time, so that is ok on that issue.

I feel that he should have been made to earn back his position in the “firsts”, by starring at WAFL level for at least 2 games. Get his competition touch back, but also show his teammates that he has really earn this position.

Having said that, as mentioned earlier, I see that West Coast want to get the media circus of his first game back,out of the way. The other thing is they haven’t much to lose with this move, for this week.

This whole thing has been handled very strangely IMO

Perhaps the Eagles thought that adding a further punishment would serve no real purpose other than to push Willie further into a bad spiral? Perhaps they were more interested in looking after his best interests rather than trying to 'look tough'. It's 2021... it's idiotic that marijuana is still illegal, it sure as hell shouldn't be the cause for a young man to have his career destroyed.

Does anyone else find this a strange choice by the club. Without bringing past issues into the discussion (they’re long gone and been dealt with) but I find the willie Rioli selection to be a strange one.

He gets done trying to cheat a drug test, cops a 2 year doping ban and luckily not to get sacked. Whilst serving that ban, he gets cought with an illegal substance while travelling through an airport. Not only is he lucky to get sacked again but he doesn’t cop an extension to the ban he is already serving. Now the club is rushing him back into the lineup , to me that seems incredibly soft and doesn’t really drive home the string culture most teams try to create.

For me, as a paid professional athlete he let his team, supporters and the club down with the initial cheating ban and you would think the correct response for him was to take his king whack, and work on building that trust back. You would also think the correct response would be to stay home and train your ass off to remain in top shape and show everyone involved that you are committed to the cause and you take it seriously. Not jet off to Broome , partake in a few recreational activities that aren’t normally associated with being an athlete.

I meant he's a mile better when it form and fit, if gifting him a game now helps keep him on track over summer it's a worthy investment.

I think it's clever to bring him back now when everyone's about to start talking about finals than Round 1 when there's nothing else to talk about.

It does seem risky to bring him in for a must-win game though, after so much time off.
