Whoever plays them in the prelim has to run a defensive forward tbat can contest in the air on him AND the midfield need to be told dont kick it anywhere near him. Take him out of the equation and port are absolutely there for beating
Its a difficult one. They have shown vision of his ability to make up ground and cover the zone real quickly

Put a decoy forward and he still covers the space - I think teams need to go deeper then utilise the decoy forward . Its that CHF/Wing spot he dominates - in that 20m arc close to the goal he starts having to defend

Has been huge the last month or so

Last night was the first time in Ken's reign I have thought they can win the flag.

Alir is the difference. Will be interesting to see how his game works on the wider Perth Stadium. But at the narrow AO he can get to any contest.

He has struggled on wider grounds.

Ollie will win their BnF, and maybe Brownlow. But Alir is their most important player in terms of winning games.

Like Rance/Houli in the 2017 GF, and Dusty winning the Norm Smith.

They have some pretty dangerous and lethal small forwards too.

Perhaps not the best pressure forwards around, but flat out dangerous.

Going deeper is the problem, not the solution. The deeper you go, the more narrow the field and the easier it is for him to get to contests. You need to spread your attack, go hard and fast at your 50 and put the ball in front of whatever option presents.

Last kick into the 50 simply needs to be shorter and flatter.
Who has the best forward line to spread and lead? They're the only danger. Melbourne plays a similar defence too.
Doggies have been in poor form lately but their game has the best chance of working through the big intercepting backs.

Forgetting about Port, the Alir Alir story is terrific. I'm wrapped for the guy and if port go premiers, I'll be happy for him.

As a bigger thought however, I think we're watching a significant change in the game right now as the African ethnic boys start to become regulars on AFL lists. Those lads are genetically built perfectly for most of our game and as success becomes more regular and visible, I think we'll see a huge influx of players from African ethnicity joining the game.
Good for footy I reckon...

For what Aliir brings to the Port team, I would say he is their most valuable player.

I posted at the time Aliir Aliir was their biggest recruit as he filled a genuine hole in their defence, particularly after Howard left.

Come on Dees or Lions!

+1

To take on Hawkins who has sheer strength and Cameron who has aerial supremacy and to win defensively, Port's win last night was clearly built on Aliir.

Agree, don't be timid.

Geelong were too scared of Alir.

He was superb. But there is still a long way to go.
While I give those feral neighbours shit about their slops recruiting. He has been an ace up their sleeve, alongside with Fanta.

Mind you I guess if you keep taking multiple random shots, eventually you will hit a target. :drunk:
