The only cost would be taking one fewer draft pick in a draft teams don't really want to participate in (so in some senses it's a plus)

My concern is he could just be totally cooked. But it wouldn't exactly set us back, not any different to Henderson getting another year.
If he's totally cooked he spends his contract as a development coach. There's options

I’d get all of Kolo, Blicavs and Atkins out of the back six if possible. If we are going to move forward in that area of the ground, they need replacing. Unfortunately, with Henderson retiring and Krueger moving on we are very light on for key defenders. We may need to persevere with Blicavs for at least another year unless we can secure a better option via a trade.

I’d start next year with -

B: Bews, Blicavs, Henry
HB: Stewart, De Koning, O’Connor

I’d also hope to give Stevens some games next year but that may be on a wing rather than half back. We do need to recruit though another tall defender and a small defender too. Atkins and Bews are both limited. Bews the better of the two.
I agree about getting Blicavs and Kolo out of the back six. I would go with something like this:
Bews, Henry, O,Connor
Tuohy, Stewart, Zuthrie

SDK to be given some games at FB, maybe Stevens to debut, Kolo to come in only if needed. Atkins to midfield or midfield depth.

I'd like to see a back six that are essentially structured like a first line of offence. No more than 1 pure shut-down player. If the delivery is good enough, there is no stopping opposition key forwards anyway. Trust the mids to pressure well enough for the likes of Stewart, Henry and Zuth to get intercepts and contest in the air. But all six need to be able to offer some quick transition. But most of all, to have played together enough to work as a collective.

Edited to remove Okunbor who I thought might debut.

Really think that back six is too short. Really only have Henry to play on the monsters, and he’s better off being able to free wheel I think. I’d assume we will have to pick up a tall defender in the off season. The cupboard is now very bare.

I don’t think Z.Guthrie is a long term option. Like Atkins, he lacks quality.

Anyone heard how Declan Mountford is tracking in the WAFL? Thought he was a decent prospect a few years ago and was surprised he was delisted by Nth. Only 24 and could be a decent option to fill in that “middle aged” bracket which we are so weak in.

Lovely structure, if we want to finish bottom 4 that is, it really has become silly season on here.

Fair enough. In my view height can be overrated in a defensive group. What matters is team defence, anticipation and getting to the contest. Look at our 07 premiership backline - Mackie, Scarlett, Milburn, Wojo, Harley, hunt. Scarlett and Harley were probably the biggest at about 193cm. Henry is taller than that, Stewart and O'Connor are thereabouts. Zuth and Tuohy can play tall and small. Wrt Henry - yes! Play him on the monsters and let him free wheel while he leaves his lumbering opponent in the dust.

One can take this with a grain of salt but could use it to give an indication of potential salaries - the Herald Sun did their annual 100 top paid players:

"The Herald Sun’s Rich List is assembled following hundreds of calls to leading industry figures to provide a full picture of the top-100 paid players in the game.

It might not be popular with players given they remain sensitive about their salaries, and yet with only a handful of players paid over $1 million per season, the AFL’s stars are far from overpaid.

The Rich List figures are presented in $50,000 bands to reflect the fact many salaries have performance bonuses they may or may not meet, with salaries often spiking or falling over a single season of a longer contract to help clubs balance the books.

Some AFL stars are missing from this list, with Joel Selwood sacrificing to keep the Cats list together and paid around $550,000."

These are the Geelong guys on that list:

100. Tom Stewart
$575,000-$625,000
Headed for his third-straight All-Australian jumper, underlining what a super recruit he has been out of South Barwon in the Geelong Football League. The Stephen Wells masterstroke is a brick wall across half back and played one of the best games Chris Scott has seen from a defensive flanker in the after-the-siren win over Western Bulldogs. Provided incredible value all-round.

99. Mark Blicavs
$575,000-$625,000
The ultra-reliable tall is one of the AFL’s most flexible players. Chris Scott can put him on the opposition’s best forward or thrust him into the ruck and even the wing in a running role. He has been rewarded by winning two best and fairest gongs as well as a third-place last year. Opted for security when he signed a five-year deal in 2018 tying him to the Cats until 2023.

83. Cameron Guthrie
$600,000-$650,000
The no-frills onballer has picked up where he left off last season when he stamped himself as an A-Grade midfielder. Guthrie, who remains without a contract for next year, won All-Australian and best and fairest honours in 2020 and has been arguably even more important this year when Dangerfield went down. Tough and reliable, expect Guthrie to sign the biggest deal of his life on his next contract in reward for his stellar form.

82. Tom Hawkins
$600,000-$650,000
Is putting together another exceptional season which sees the superstar goal kicker heading towards a fourth All-Australian jumper. He is in great physical condition, creating goals with his ruck work on top of his obvious class and marking power. Kicked at least one goal in every game this season and is renowned for his selflessness. A champion forward.

41. Mitch Duncan
$700,000-$750,000
Would have been high up in Norm Smith Medal contention in last year’s Grand Final before the Dustin Martin second-half takeover. One of the best field kicks in the competition who poses a constant threat in the forward half. May not have some of the accolades as some of his Geelong teammates but he has been rewarded in his contracts for his loyalty to the club after turning down offers from the two Western Australian clubs

10. Jeremy Cameron
$850,000 - $900,000
Some may have argued the Cats sold the farm for the Coleman medallist, but is there any doubt now the trade was worth it? Cameron has been red hot since returning from his double hamstring blow and is steering the Cats towards another deep finals finish. In almost career-best form and worth every penny.

6. Patrick Dangerfield
$900,000 - $950,000
Has become the face of the Cats since his free agency move back home to Victoria. Played through the pain and restriction of a secret groin injury last year and is the obvious candidate to take over from Joel Selwood as captain if he hands over the skipper’s armband next year. Still one of the most influential stars in the game either midfield or forward.

And for comparisons sake, here's a guy taken the same draft as Clark and if these 2 are on near the same amount it would be a joke - though maybe it also says something about GC and what they have to offer younger guys to stay with the club

Jack Lukosius
Gold Coast

$600,000-$650,000
Lukosius is a strange beast, one of football’s most piercing kicks and capable of being the most damaging defender in the league given his height, marking ability, athleticism and capacity to cut opponents apart with that silky right boot. He isn’t a complete player yet but he has plenty of time. He certainly isn’t desperate to race home to Adelaide but like Ben King, he will want to see improvement at the Suns before he signs past his current deal to the end of 2022.

Yeah so Clarke to get anywhere near $600k a year he would have to be at the very least in our best 22 let alone in the top 10-5 in the club

GC would be different as they will have to overpay to keep up with the SC requirements

Are you sure your DVI calculations on list is working as intended. I'm getting the 60% DVI remaining for Geelong

I think your 10 year overview will be ugly view. The last decade we haven't got much value from our DVI spent. Sure our total wasn't great to start with but our games per DVI would be pretty shocking
Ah just noticed the issue. Using footywire as the source for “still on list” counts Fogarty and Kelly as they are still on a list. So this won’t work.

I agree re those changes but i assume if we were going to move kolo we would have let him go as a FA we are probably stuck with him now unless a new defence coach wants to put him in the 2s.
Atkins (who to be fair did really improve this year) could go back up forward and clark plays half back which i would like to see.
I agree given our lack of kpds blitz needs to stay in defence for stability for now.

Fair points. (Though you forgot Enright). We also had a dominant midfield too over that period which took pressure off our defenders. If you also look at the old names it was immense in quality - Scarlett, Enright, Milburn and Mackie in particular are all time greats of the game. Only Stewart and possibly Henry (in a few years) are in that conversation.

Id like to do what north are doing with lynch-have talia in a vfl development role but on the rookie list in case we get injuries.

You just need it get it to check if the team in the current club column is the same as the team in the drafted by club column
Can do. Will take an adjustment to the code.

And there weren't as many 200cm+ key forwards back in 2007 either
