I feel sure Higgins will play on in 2022.
So he should.
He wasn’t cooked, I just feel like he looked lost with an actual game plan instead of just getting the ball.
Something Isaac Smith mentioned a few times, that he needed to learn alot and he definitely did that

No doubt about it. His last six H&A games saw him gather 20+ possessions. And still came on as our medi-sub twice in the finals series.

I'd be the first to admit that I was underwhelmed by a fair bit of his footy this season. And his goal-kicking (if you can call it that) was simply abysmal. But the notion that he's going to hang them up when he has a contract and was still amassing decent numbers in games late in the year is just fanciful in my view.

On the other hand, Dahl may well pull the pin if his body is shot to pieces.

Agreed and so he should.
He has a contract so in that sense it’s true but he was woefully below expectations. His and ours I’m sure. If you physically can’t play at he level anymore do you play that extra year or bow out. Hopefully there is no sooking when he’s playing 2s next year.

No offence but that is garbage. Higgins was fumbly, unbelievably slow, didn’t want to make body contact (that did improve a bit right at the end) and his skills dropped off a cliff.

Game plan had absolutely nothing to do with that.

SHEEHAN’S TWO SMOKEYS IN THIS YEAR’S NATIONAL DRAFT
BY ALEX ZAIA 4 HOURS AGO
OJ230421MW0297.JPG

AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan has put forward two smokeys to keep an eye on in this year’s National Draft.
Murray Bushrangers talent Tom Brown is an exciting prospect who possess “mercurial-type ability” through traffic, according to Sheehan.

“He’s a boy from the Murray Bushrangers,” Sheehan told SEN Afternoons.
“His dad Paul Brown didn’t quite play 100 games at Geelong. He’s in the open draft and this kid has got some mercurial-type ability through traffic.
“When he comes off half-back or plays half-forward, he just steps through them as if they’re not there at times.
“He’s got great speed, breaks away on many, many occasions as well.”
Cal Twomey has him in his top 25. Surely that doesn’t mean he’s a Smokey. Shame his dad could squeeze out those extra games. When he was on or not injured he could really play.

Comparing 2007 structures to what is required in 2022 is the long bow of the year, 6-6-6 has left forward lines more open than ever and theres more giant key forwards than ever in the system, you just don't win without size down back these days.
Geez man, all I was doing was casually bringing one of our club's all-time best backlines in giving an example about heights of players and an opinion on whether we are best served with a tall defence or one more geared toward attack. Happy to claim the "longbow of the year" award with this effort though. Where do I pick up my prize? It is an authentic, right?

Conclusions you could draw from this:

1. GWS had ridiculous access to draft value (DVI) due to concessions upon entering the comp but has lost over half of it over the decade (and players leaving which “tops up” their DVI)

2. Gold Coast has also had ridiculous access to draft value (DVI) but just by virtue of being shit (and players leaving which “tops up” their DVI)

3. Geelong has had access to the worst draft value (DVI) of all 18 clubs 2011-2020. The system is setup for Geelong to be no good by the year 2021, not a top 4 side.

4. Geelong has used just under the median amount of DVI it was entitled to over the period (83% vs 87%). So it was slightly more inclined to trade value than other clubs. Port was aligned with Geelong on this measure while Hawthorn, Richmond, St Kilda and West Coast were “worse”.

5. Geelong has taken more national draft selections than average. This is probably a deliberate strategy to get more looks at more lower value draftees.

6. Geelong fares close to worst in terms of (1) proportion of draftees still on list, only Sydney fares worse (2) proportion of DVI still on list, only GWS fares worse

7. Geelong doesn’t get as many games out of each draftee but gets nearly the best value (games) per DVI point. This may suggest it is better at spotting talent or is forced to play more lower quality draftees than average. Being more inclined to trade in players would work against this measure.

8. Hawthorn’s list is in a world of pain.

I see a lot of people knocking back the idea of Talia for the belief in SDK. SDK hasn’t looked ready yet and he can’t be thrown to the wolves. I think Talia would be a fantastic acquisition to tackle the opposition’s key forward and let Blicavs play CHB and use his running and closing ability to affect the contest as a third man up. It would allow a perfect transition for SDK to get games against certain opponents, leaving Talia to rest and stay cherry ripe. Also, I would like to see us trial Higgins in the defensive half. He looked good in the role for small parts at North Melbourne and he could also move up the ground to the wing at times from there and chop out for Menegola/Duncan. I don’t see him having the pace at half forward with his back to goal or the general goal sense and creativity.

Stewart Talia Henry
Tuohy Blicavs Clark/O’Connor (if Clark leaves)

Bench: Higgins

This would mean we finally say goodbye to Kolodjashnij as a starter and use Bews as back-up. Also, it gives a huge amount of flexibility and with the clean ball movement this back 6/7 can provide I feel like our midfield will benefit and appear “faster”, and most importantly our forwards could feast out. And I must add, I see Rohan being named as an option for defence and I somewhat agree. He’s useless in big games up forward so it could be good to see what he can offer defensively with his physical assets.

Almost half of our DVI on list from 2011- 2020 was drafted in the last two years. Of which we've gotten 12 games from from most draft cohorts doesn't bode well. Removing the last two years and. Our Retention of DVI is around 35% over an 8 year period. If Clark leaves it is closer 28%. We just didn't find value at the draft this decade, it was either trade or decline.

You can see the DVI effect from Sydney's Academy bids.

Melbourne's DVI retention is notable. Unlike GC who have bled talent. I'd like to work out have DVI teams have spent trading. The players GWS lose tend to hold value while those of GC drop to near zero.

Point 8 warms my heart,

If you take out the last two years every team goes down. Geelong still ranks 2nd on games per DVI. I think it shows we have done well with the picks we have had but the problem is the picks aren’t good enough.

Precisely. And it's exactly what the AFL has been hoping for in our case for many, many years now.

SDK would not be thrown to the wolves, we have Henry, Blicavs, Stewart, Bews, Kolo, Touhy, O’Connor, Atkins, even Zac Guth. That is plenty of experience in defence.

We do not need another experienced defender. We need spots in the side for a guy like De Koning.

There’s only one KPD in that list, which is precisely why he’s thrown to the wolves haha

My only reservation with Talia would be his body, hes a miles better player than Henderson and has 3 years on his side, really a no brainer on face value.

Gaping hole this year was against the Max King/Harry McKay type of forwards and Talia is perfect for those matchups.

Provided we do medical due diligence on him. Knee then a foot injury, he could be cooked. But if he isn't, we do tend to get the best out of some of these oldies... He could do a Hendo. Even if he gives us 15 games next year, we can slowly push some youngsters into easier matches.

De Koning only works in a Melbourne sort of setup where youve got May and Lever to chop him out (like they did with Petty virtually all season) Expecting him to be the main man essentially just isn't going to work and is setting a kid up to fail.

Yeah, I agree. But he might be okay playing further up the ground like CHB, but yeah, its still a risk at this stage.

We just dont have the security in defenders to cover an undersized kid playing every week, especially when Blicavs is moved to other positions every 2nd week and the club has always liked keeping his versatility as an option.

Yeah, is there any other Key Defender options out there? Someone mentioned Skinner in the SANFL.
I know that Nick Stevens probably can't play key defence, but at 193cm, who knows if he develops he may give temp cover. Scarlo was that height. But he will probably be a Stewart replacement longer term, and play that quarter-back style HBP.

This is one of the best posts on this site in years.

9. Yes, yes you do have too much time. I used to love graphs and charts like this on here when I had tome at Uni. One of the things I miss doing as a worker bee now.

Now I get home sit in the office chair and fall asleep at the computer after work lol.
