GOLD Coast and North Melbourne are exploring an innovative trade that would see the Roos acquire the Suns' pick No.19 plus half-forward Darcy Macpherson.

AFL.com.au understands both clubs have been discussing a 'salary dump' which would see the Roos take on the bulk of Macpherson's wage while also offering greater playing opportunities.

The Suns this week received confirmation they would be granted access to pick 19 in this year's NAB AFL Draft and quickly turned to conversations around on-trading the selection.

North Melbourne's salary cap sits among the most flushed for room in the competition, which would allow it to take on Macpherson's wage.

Should the move progress, it would see the Roos armed with three picks inside 20 – No.1, 19 and 20 – at this year's draft.

As part of the transaction, the Roos would likely need to hand over a future selection to the Suns – expected to be a second or third-round pick.

The Suns have been informing clubs they are keen to trade into next year's draft, and by trading out pick 19 this year, would be expected to bolster their stocks for 2022.

A move for Macpherson to Arden Street would also alleviate pressures on the Suns' salary cap, given they have been forced into paying above market rate for re-signing young players in recent years.

They have also informed contracted midfielder Will Brodie they are happy to facilitate a move for him to another club for greater playing opportunities.

Macpherson, 23, last signed a contract extension with the Suns in the middle of a breakout 2019 campaign until the end of 2022.

The son of former Western Bulldog Steve, Macpherson finished third in the Suns' best and fairest in 2019 but has been limited to 23 games in the past two seasons.

Should Macpherson arrive at the Roos he would provide coach David Noble with extra depth, which includes Tarryn Thomas, Jack Mahony, Jaidyn Stephenson, Charlie Lazzaro, Kayne Turner, Curtis Taylor, Phoenix Spicer and Eddie Ford. – Mitch Cleary

I would use 19.
trade 20 for another 20s pick + a 2022 second rounder.

That is a seriously smart move by us. We get another top 20 pick plus a handy player that will be at worst, depth.

Salary dumps aren’t really a thing in the AFL but can reap some great rewards for the team taking on the big contract in American sports, particularly in the NBA. We clearly have lots of salary cap room so it won’t affect our cap plans in the short term at all - and we get a juicy pick from Gold Coast by helping them out.

If it’s for next year’s second, absolutely 100% do the trade. Even if we win the spoon again, which I don’t think we will, the trade becomes pick 19 in 2021 + McPherson for pick 19 in 2022.

We could package up 19, 20 to get higher in the draft or on trade 19 with someone who wants the 1st pick of day 2 of the draft because the like a slider.

I reckon that deal you quoted would be what we would be working to.

Isaac Smith netted the Hawks a 3rd round pick (pick 42) for a two year deal. Taz is getting a 2 year deal (let's say a 3rd round compo pick if he went via FA (pick 40))

Taz + 39 for CCJ and 45 is about right and you don't lose the Chol compo.

I think the club should tell Tarrant if he plans on going, he should get Richmond to lodge the free agency paperwork so the AFL can make it's determination what compensation it is offering. I think we should have the expectation to get the same compensation that Hawks got last year for Smith.

I think the club would get the best outcome if it handled the two movements differently.

CCJ should be (38 now 39) via trade or PSD. Tarrant should be something equivalent to FA compensation or they can take him as a free agent.

Worst case scenario is Richmond doesn't want to deal with us, in which case we get CCJ via PSD and get FA compensation for Tarrant. If Richmond wants to trade, they have to offer something better than what we will get not bothering to deal with them.

I don't want to use the PSD on CCJ, it has value that has to come into the equation. CCJ wouldn't be free via PSD, it would be the opportunity cost of having to use it on him vs someone else.

Without the AFL's FA compensation decision on Tarrant, i can't see us getting something of equivalent value until we have that determination.

We could almost trade next years second for 19 straight up.

If he’s on as much as they are suggesting, they need to pay a premium to exit a bad contract.

We should be looking to trade 19 to someone like the dogs to up their points balance this year and ask for their future first. Improves our draft hand next year and flushes a pick above us
