Fremantle Under Longmuir

So after all the knifing of Longmuir this week ( admittedly I may have been somewhat disgruntled) if we win the Derby this weekend against a reasonably full strength Wet Toast does that make him a good coach or is it good cattle ?
Going off the last couple of seasons it has been "burn everything top down" after a loss and "finals are coming" if it is a win

Honestly mate I'm not sure why your defending him so much. Longmuir seems a ripper person and one anyone would love to have around there club. But he seems to be one of the least inspiring coaches. Going from Ross who was obviously very hard on players to Longmuir who seems as soft as butter doesn't help. I think he cops alot of shit but he's the only one that can change that, drop the players that need dropping and start playing the young blokes that are supposed to keep this club moving for next 10-15 years.
Justin is very capable of a spray

The bolded part is on the money!

Griffin Logue was definitely a strange pick.

There was a lot of talk about him being a 2nd round prospect until Freo really sounded him out and he almost went at Pick 8 by default. Always looked like a project player at the championships, not a first round pick.

Funnily enough Freo would have probably taken Naughton - instead of Cerra - the following year if they hasn’t taken Logue.

Ryan and Darcy were great picks later on though.
There’s 2 players go high in recent drafts that I’ve really fallen for based on trends of the game. Paddy Dow as a super quick inside mid in the Richmond model. And Logue who had some Rance like traits and looked like a really high upside intercept defender.

He hasn’t progressed as hoped, but it probably stands out more because of draft position and because Freo are stacked for tall defensive options (if they can ever stay healthy) and also play a fairly structured team defence.

Every team has role players and I really thought a reason for Freo to be successful this year is because Freo’s wings, defensive forwards and defensive mid options are all fine. Mature bodies, ok skill level, good team cohesion.

The issue at the moment is they’ve got nothing from Darcy, Fyfe, Taberner, Walters and seemingly are missing Mundy when they shouldn’t be.

A good backline, Serong and Brayshaw isn’t enough star power to win games.

The focus shouldn’t really be on the coach. If anything it should be asking whether Brodie and Clark were enough to move the list along at a time where they need to keep improving. Those additions barely covered the loss of Cerra.

Fyfe, Tabs and a healthy Darcy immediately straighten Freo up. And then within a couple of years I expect guys like Sturt, Henry, Erasmus, Amiss will provide the X factor currently missing. That’s the bet Freo is making.

So far it’s just 1 unexpected loss making things look messy, and maybe they will be messy this year. I’d back the coach in.

I suspect recruiters generally overestimate a players rate of improvement and forget it is far easier to go from being a capable player to a good player than it is to go from being a good player to a great player.

Plus Logue was homegrown and already had a lifestyle comparable to the regimented routine of an AFL player as a high level rower. - early wake ups, highly structure exercise program. I didn't mind what I saw of him in the championships, but there was definitely something a little NQR about his game sense. I actually see the Rance comparisons - made up some ridiculous ground to make spoils - but you can't leave that kind of space at AFL level unless you're Rance himself and have years of experience pulling off those kind of heroic efforts.

It's interesting watching Thomson Dow in light of seeing Paddy's (poor) development in his first couple of years, and I'm starting to get a sense of what he may have looked like 3 years in with some time at VFL level in a proper system. He's basically at the opposite end of the spectrum though - a natural junior ball winner most recruiters would assume would go on to become a 200 game star who naturally lifts his game as the team around him improves.

I still hold some hope he can break into a stronger Blues lineup, but he's now clearly being made to earn a spot and the Blues have suddenly become stacked with inside mids.

Losing Neale hill cerra has put us back another year still happy how we’re tracking.
Eagles have put a lot of mayo on there missing players issue
Yesterday They had their key backs
McGovern hurn
Gaff and nick nat in mid
And had their key forwards jd jk
Eagles had 7 players 150+games
Freo had 1
Freo averaged nearly 40 games less per player.
We were missing our whole starting midfield bar brayshaw.
Freo are tracking well but whether we contend the premiership depends on Treacy amiss Sturt.
Cox and walker in for Hamling and Logue looked a winner with better transition out of defence.
I think we will make the 8 if we do it will be a great platform for the next 5 years.
We should of thrown the cheque book at pyke to have as JLO senior assistant/technical director he has a great attacking mind and has turned a dour horse led swans to a great team.

The eagles have done no such thing
26 changes in 2 weeks...you're not real bright are you shane

Allen, Cripps, Duggan, Shuey, Kelly, Yeo, Barrass, Rioli, Cole out is decimated no matter how you spin it, add Sheppard a late retirement all out, Darling still building fitness, and the next up 2nd ruck behind Allen in Williams out too.

I'm pretty happy saying I made a killing on Freo as clearly they had a stronger side, even excluding Darcy/Fyfe/Serong/Mundy. They are clearly in a better spot than the Eagles. The fact WC started favourites was a joke.

Anyway, Freo got a game together in the end, but why it took them 1.5 quarters to start moving the ball with quick kicks I'll never know. Wasn't til Chapman set them off that they went "oh hang on". Thoroughly outplayed in general play by the Eagles in the 1st, were lucky to be leading. Thought they did the job well after that but clearly they aren't going to get those 40 minutes of lackluster ball movement without feeling it on the scoreboard against other sides.

Yesterdays win was nothing special, we did the same as against St Kilda got a 4-5 goal lead then started playing wide and defensively. The only difference is St Kilda were good enough to come back and win while the Eagles just let the lead slowly grow. I can't see any future with this gameplan against even middle of the road sides

Will Brodie goes alright.

I know tearing shreds off role-players like Aish, Acres and Colyer is a popular pastime but they were all solid tonight as well. Definitely not list-plodders.

Team looks very pacy now.

Yep a lopsided count for the gws game. However in watching it (we did get the good end of the stick no doubt) but our pressure was pretty intense thus received a lot of holding the ball and throw etc.

Most free kicks in the league (6 teams yet to play today)

Overall we are 6 free kicks up in the positive for the season though. Hardly a game changer especially when you look at Collingwood or Western Bulldogs.

I honestly can’t recall getting the rub of the green like that in 27 years of supporting the club. Definitely the exception, not the norm.

The most pleasing aspect for me is the difference in forward 50 pressure compared to last year. You can’t be a seriously good team without bringing that ferocity in the forward half. We’ve got a fair bit to go to get the level of consistency required to play finals but tonight really highlighted the spread of young talent we have and the harder edge some players have gained over summer.

Maybe the other team shouldn’t commit so many free kicks then?
