Bad luck Blues. Just wanted to point out the obvious that Cripps is a gun. Not sure how the Brownlow votes will fall but he was clearly the best player on the ground and in the game. Fyfe got 3 votes a few years ago in a loss to the Hawks and I reckon Cripps is deserving in this game.

Wanna see Carroll get a run.

For some reason he has had a harder path to put himself in the frame & his form is too good for just a dew kicker.

Him for Newnes, who is a clogger.
He looks a ripper and ready for a crack at the real stuff.

Dockers look good, very hard working, good pace and great tackling.

Our key ballwinners got it, but gave it up under pressure or to floaty kicks. Our non ball winners just couldnt get to it. 10 odd players <10 including some talls, i know, but the small forwards were ineffective entirely.

Need some aggression in the back 6 too.

And far out can the fowards stop leading to eht same spot or congregating.

Think most of us see it.

Too much left to too few. We have maybe 8 or so players who we consistently get enough out of, and I mean more or less each week. That is simply nowhere near good enough. If our top 12 or so don't play really well, we will be shown up against decent teams, because our bottom 6-8 are not at the level (bottom 6-8 level) most of the time.

We know our wings are an issue and there is not much we can do about it. Carroll will get a game next week for either/or so that's a good start. I've defended Setters this year and stand by that, but he was god-awful last night except for that pass to Cripps. Looking forward to getting Cuningham back eventually - we are desperate for his type. Surprised we haven't moved Saad up to the wing, but it would hurt our defence - having a great season. Feel they should try Honey on the wing too - utilise his exceptional athletic ability. Will be disappointed if they revert to LOB - a nothing move.

McKay turns to water yet again against a physical opponent. Sure people will make excuses for him, but it's his thing. He can't handle physical pressure - not consistently anyway. I harp on about it. Currently overrated.

The beauty of TDK is that he is courageous and gives effort. I prefer a Charlie/TDK/JSOS combo tbh. Give me consistent effort any day.

Weiters just a good player this year. Great backmen back themselves to mark and create, while beating their opponents. Good/very good defenders stop their opponents getting goals only. Weiters is more the latter, which isn't enough from him.

Durdin is young and has traits to be a good player. We need to keep an eye on the future, bc we simply don't have the cattle atm. He stays for mine. With an eye to the future, Owies goes for Motlop.

Williams is disappointing. Also doesn't go hard enough, but is definite best 22.

Players who we see in our future should be picked if those in their positions in the senior team are not predicted to be part of our next GF team, imo.

Only caught some of the game, but figuring out who those last 6-8 players that get selected every week is a painpoint for most clubs until they reach sustained success. May take the whole season, may take two but it shouldn't impede them from playing finals.

Fremantle played at a higher intensity and higher speed than we did.

We broke lose, they closed quick we closed a little slower. The ball spilled lose they closed on it quicker. There was more effort and speed around the contest for them.

Our skills were sloppy. We dropped a lot of marks. We missed a lot of kicks we shouldn't. We put pressure on our selves.

Defensive. Lose men forward of the ball. I thought we defended against the switch and corridor play well this week but let ourselves down with the basics. Gee they moved it quickly and easily at times. Failed to lock it into our forward half. Failed to create a contest.

Offensive we rely on individual efforts. They ran from behind play a lot, created overlap run, we didn't do that well enough.

I think we need to get some more speed and outside run into the team. We just looks slow and low on intensity. We need to rotate our forwards through the middle of the ground more as well.

Our forwards are allowed to get "cold" when the play is against us. I'd be pushing them up the field and rotating them through the middle more.

Walsh - He does his job as an offensive mid winning the ball but his tackling of recent weeks has been poor. Onballers need to be better tacklers. Accumulated a lot of the footy but just feel his impact wasn't as high as his numbers.

Cerra - Thought he was ok. His kicking is not outstanding, it's AFL standard.

Cripps - Sometimes he just tries too hard but gee it's a bad look when he's looking to give and there is no one. This is district footy stuff. Thought he was pretty good just poorly supported.

Docherty - Another consistent game.

Hewett - He's been our most consistent player. Another good game from mr reliable.

Saad - Without his individual brilliance we would be stuffed. We get opened up all the time and he just makes it work for us with his pace and attack on the ball.

Newman - Terrible game, butchered it. Hasn't been bad this year but he sometimes has games where he just picks out the worst options.

Weitering - Thought he was pretty good. Looked like we were trying to free him up.

Young - Young was ok. He's a player who plays well below their ability. Very indecisive as a defender. He has talent but he just doesn't have any confidence or arrogance about him to bring it out. He's very under developed physically.

DeKoning - Got another opportunity this week as a ruckman and I thought he was pretty good up against a quality opponent. Even took a few marks.

Williams - Was not his best game however this was not a good game for our defenders, under a fair bit of pressure.

Newnes - Really didn't offer us much.

Cottrell - He was quiet this week but at least he looked like he was putting in effort to chase and apply pressure unlike the rest of them. Offensively looked a bit lost out there but perhaps this says more about how we played as a team than anything.

Fisher - Did nothing at all. Starting to see that he doesn't do the defensive part of his role. Bad day to be a forward though. He should be going on the ball more, says a lot about our coaching, just not rotating the midfielders and leaving forwards stuck doing nothing.

Martin - Showed glimpses but again it was a dirty day for forwards.

Owies - Started well but was really sloppy which is not really like him. Quiet game.

Parks - did some good things but unfortunately he is a weak spoiler. Just an average game.

Setterfield - Pretty poor. Not a great runner, not great over head, nothing special at ground level.

Boyd - All effort but not up to it.

Curnow - Started well then could not find it.

Durdin - Looked good early but was left to get cold in the forward pocket where nothing was happening. Needs to go into the middle more, we could do with the pace and rotations.

McKay - Did nothing. Did his best impression of a statue.

Pittonet - a bad injury for us.

Re: Carroll. Sometimes for his development you just have to reward these kids.

He signed on for another 2 years and won’t it be great going into next year if this kid has 5-8 games under his belt.

Here's the issue there: our HBF's are less defensive than perhaps they should be, with Williams and Saad backing all the way up to HF. As a consequence of that, we need our wings to do more defensive running/positioning to compensate. If we had the defensive HBF's - or at least our HBF's didn't get dragged so far upfield - then we could use Walsh/Cerra as attacking wings.

Then you get to the issues with speed we'd have if they were shifted outside a stoppage.

I'd really be sending Saad up to a wing, because he'd be a gun on a wing. Let Williams and Doc fight it out between each other for the HBF and promote Stocker as a defensive back pocket.
I think the HBF are not attacking enough and push up with the wings to get the ball deep and hold it there -- our chain out of defense isn't taking enough ground on turnover so we only get to seventy out before it is coming back and then on the rebound we don't lock up the field and allow that sliding ball forward at angle to easily -- there scoring efficiency was no better than ours just our inside 50 number was terrible -- 6 in a qaurter for 100 possesions please I want to throw up ..

Went to the game live and then watched some of the replay. It probably wasn't as bad as some are speculating. Freo is a good team and has a great defence from the Lyon era, plus a good midfield rotation and outside run.
Always up against it once Pittonet went off and mcKay hobbling around. I thought Young and DeKoning both did well despite being lighter than opponents. Hewett has been a real revelation and Cripps our best.

I wondered if we'd try pace ourselves so our 3rd quarters aren't so horrendous, it did seem that way. We tried to play more through the corridor in the 3rd and actually had some good entries but just couldn't capitalise. Williams was driving it forward quite a bit off the flank.

hate to bag the umpires but we missed 3 pretty blatant f50 frees in the 3rd, Curnow arm chop, then Logue dropping the ball and Martin high tackle. Pick up any of those and could have been closer in the last when we had a good crack at it.

For next wk, I'd bring Silvagni, Dow, Carroll and Stocker in. Pitto, Newnes, Parks and Setterfield out. Plow as sub instead of Boyd.
Move Docherty to a wing and Stocker into the d50. Dow in means we could rotate Walsh and Cerra on a wing. Carrol was named as best in ressies so deserves a go.
Durdin, Owies and Fisher would want better showings next wk as well. Wouldn't mind seeing Williamson soon as well as i think he has more promise than Parks and could be a wing option.

Clearly not one to rush in ;)

11 likes for the 11 years of preparation. Well done :)

I actually think its our Half Forwards that let us down defensively.

Williams, Newman, Saad are generally in good defensive position while also attacking well.

It's the opposition half-backs that are providing all the link up play and even a lot of forward 50 entries.

My 2c anyway.
Oh, our half forwards/pockets are definitely letting us down at present. They only really clicked IMO round 1. More, as an explanation for why our wings have to play a mite more defensively than they otherwise would.

I get that Voss is playing as much as he wants us to play as he can off a single preseason, but the way this year's playing out has me thinking of a specific criticism of Teague Ross Lyon provided a few times last year: that we informed all and sundry that we wanted to be judged as an attacking team, so instead of the common critique provided by everyone else lamenting our defensive issues he criticised our attack.

We're arguably still trying to play that way, we're just more effective at it with a thoroughly improved clearance setup, Cerra, Hewitt and Doc having returned to form, and Cripps kicking straighter.

I don't know if this is Voss' method yet.

it's what the reserves are for - be better at mc than waiting for 40 possies and 3 goals from players - some blokes just perform better at the higher level.....

This X100…

Voss is going to pull the trigger soon, sometimes it just comes down to timing and when he will get the most impact from the dropped and the ones coming in…

Playin North could lull some into a false sense of security and will build confidence in others…

Pull the trigger I say…

think you mean that x 40 billion.........

Too many leaving it to the few as always has been the case at Carlton over the last 5 years.

Way too many happy with themselves and their half arsed efforts especially a few who are on big money.

We have conditional footballers (down hill skiers) who look like the Showtime Lakers when we have the ball and playing well but won't fight and scrap when we aren't getting things our way and don't want to do the hard things required at AFL level.

There are also a few who are just not AFL standard and it's time to send them back to the VFL and bring the youth, aggressiveness and better ball use of a Carroll,Stocker,Motlop,Dow,Kemp,O'brien into the team and give them a solid run to find form.

Being at the actual game you see so much more of the structures and set plays and one of Williams,Saad,Newman must actually be held
accountable by the coaching staff, not every one can play loose in defense and run and gun and not get back and man up it happened at least 5 times
on the turnover.

And Freo scored each time plus Williams gifting them 2 goals from direct turnovers did not help the turnover to Switkowski deflated the team
when we had momentum and were challenging in the last quarter.

The forward line also seem to be dysfunctional when the high ball is coming in when teams put us under pressure and mids just kick it Charlie and Harry have to get the **** out of each others way until they realize that it's not going to work at full capacity or to the teams benefit.

Someone has to do the sacrificial lead and be a decoy to clear the defenders out of the 50 to stop the intercepting which happens way too much when teams flood our fwd 50 and Voss and Co must get a strategy to beat this ASAP.

The usual contingent played well Cripps,Walsh,Hewett,Docherty,Weitering,Cerra,Saad and I thought TDK,Young,Cottrell all actually played serviceable games but the rest were either not up to AFL standard or too lazy and conditional to actually have an impact on the contest/outcome of the game.

Pittonet is one of our main barometers along with JSOS and him going down and JSOS already out hurt us exponentially hopefully they are both ok next week or Goldstein will take North to a win through sheer brutality in the ruck contest.

Hopefully we can get JSOS,Kennedy,Stocker back into the side next week to add grunt, hardness team first ethos and the sacrificial acts required to play at AFL level so a few conditional soft unaccountable not AFL standard players can make way and get the win against North.

GO BLUES!

Hewett disposals by match: 28, 32, 28, 29, 33, 30.

Not too far off 50% contested rate, yet still running at 84% DE. Incredible.

Now add in 8 clearances and 5 tackles a match.

The guy is getting it done, doing the hard yards AND doing all that cleanly.

I can't get over how amazing his recruitment is.
Absolutely. And he was averaged only 18 disposals per match at Sydney so he has massively improved.
