Toast Round 15 = Collingwood 88-77 GWS

If only that were true. We have kicked poorly for goal several times this year, some games it cost us (i.e. WCE), some we scrapped through. You can bet your bottom dollar it will happen several more times before season ends.
We have also kicked well several times this year.

There are games like yesterday where we just can’t kick straight. And it’s contagious. Then, on the rare occasions that GWS had the opportunity to score, they were accurate. I hate those games! We fans spend the day groaning.

But still very nice to get a win, just not by enough. We absolutely smashed them around the ground. It was, in general play, a good old fashioned hammering.

Moore rushed decision aside I thought they were pretty good. Even that decision by the letter of the law was right.
The non-decision yo award WHE the free kick when he marked and a GWS player continued to stay in the protected zone cost us a certain goal (he ended up playing on and Cox marked and missed).

Not paying Elliot’s below the knees on the final minute.

If I watched more of it I’d be sure to pick up additional ones like the play on decision to Steele.

Fly's presser

A few heart murmurs at the end?

What does a week like that do to the players? Is it a big distraction?

The game could have been over by 3QT, but you couldn't put enough pressure on the scoreboard.

Steele Sidebottom was excellent leading from the front and to have one of your real leaders stand up especially after a distracting week.

What did you make of the decision to call play on when Steele Sidebottom was lining up in the goal square from a 50m penalty?

The Darcy Moore rush behind decision has created a lot of discussion. What's your interpretation of that and what do you teach the players?

How impressed are you with Darcy Cameron and what are you going to do with the ruck when Brodie Grundy is available?

When is Brodie Grundy expected to return?

Brayden Maynard's 150th game and he looked on early and did a great job restricting Toby Greene to just one goal. Can you speak about how important he is inside the walls.

Have you spoken to Jordan De Goey since the press conference on Friday and are you expecting him to be at training tomorrow?

Is JDG happy with how the club has handled the situation? Is he angry and upset?

Could JDG return next week?

First time since 2019 you've won 5 consecutive games and you are 7th. In your wildest dreams, could you imagine the first season being as good as it has been under your tutelage?

Did Vossy end up taking you out for dinner?

At any point, do you dare to dream about finals?

What were the conversations when you took over. Were you taking over a side that was rebuilding and was it about patience. Is the rebuild done or is it a mini rebuild?

I like that we’re celebrating little moments under Macrae, this week side moving to 4th on the pies games list. It seems to be a theme.

On the Sidebottom 30 seconds, I think we just need to disguise it more. Fiddle with your socks, tie shoe laces or go back further to lengthen the run in. Standing at the top of the goal square and looking up at the scoreboard was always going to get the umps attention.

At the game I didn’t think it was a free.
I thought Billy went to ground as opposed to had his legs taken.
Haven’t seen the replay yet though.

That might work for deliberate out of bounds but I’m not so sure for the rushed behind. Devils advocate and touching it on the line equally reinforces he was deliberately trying to rush it through. If had have been any team mate then he’d get the benefit of the doubt for progressing the footy toward a team mate.

Given that he touched it on the line, the kick off the ground wasn’t the last touch and as far as I’m aware, shouldn’t even come into consideration any more. As though it never happened.

Did he rush it through on the line while technically under no pressure? Possibly, but he was;
a) no chance of knowing that Riccardi had stopped behind him, and
b) no chance of stopping the ball actually going through anyway. All he could do was deflect it slightly.

I don't understand why Sidey was faffing about. We were on top and I would have thought he'd have wanted to keep it rolling.

He wasn't the only one yesterday looking at the clock during their set shot routine. Maybe it's a new instruction to milk the full 30 when they are in front. Like basketball using all the shot clock.

Or go for a 50m run up like Ben Brown

McCrae admitted in the presser that he tells the boys to use the 30 seconds as much as possible.

Vital win by the boys, happy with some parts, but the game should never have been as close as it ended up being.
Definitely love the game and form of Cameron, and deserved his 3 year extension. Interesting in the next 4 to 5 weeks, when Grundy is back, and how we utilise Cameron then. I say he keeps his spot as the number 1 ruck, and Grundy may have to be relief ruck / forward, probably replacing Coxy, but even that would be a tough decision, if Coxy's form continues, eventhough he was quieter yesterday.
Love our back six, probably one of the best defence's in the competition. We start alot of our attacks through our back six, and we have a great balance between a defensive and attacking game style. Murphy has been a real important acquisition to the back six, so hope he stays fit....🤞
Elliott is super important to us both with his work rate in F50. On his day, he is hard to stop, so we need him to stay fit, and manage him well, particularly if we get to play finals. Along the same lines, McCreery is super important for our high pressure F50 game. Love the way he goes about it, and is becoming a vital cog in our F50 setup. Would love to see him one day play as a inside mid. I think he would be a beast as a clearance mid.
Goal kicking really cost us a good percentage boost yesterday, then on top of that we struggled to stop the opposition momentum, and allowed a run on with goals from the Giants. We did the same against Carlton and Hawthorn, when those games got to close then they should've been. Something we need to work on, but we are a team still learning and building, so over time hopefully we learn to really put sides away.
We are in the 8, so can't complain too much, and all we need to do is keep winning the games we're expected to, and steal a couple of those 50/50 games, and we should see finals.....Go Pies!!!

Good to see a section of this article focused on the umpiring and then being booed off the ground

Who did the best player ratings? The coaches? I would have had Maynard and Cameron as our best rather than Sidebottom - no problem with his game and possessions, but he gave the ball to the opposition too often. Maynard too seems to kick rather wildly when delivering into the forward line, but otherwise I thought it was his best game for the year.

I’m so rapt that Murphy is delivering. I always had faith in him and always talked him up on this forum. He’s a jet.
I’m also pleasantly surprised how well we played in the first 3 quarters; the GWS team is STACKED with A graders. They are definitely not worthy of their current ladder position.
Playing one short in the midfield nearly cost us in the last. I would never have believed I could see a player more out of depth than Bianco. I saw that in Chugg today.
…. I’m also not buying what Ginnivan is putting out. When finals are on and the physical heat arrives, I’m going for McCreery.
Darcy Moore needs to be released to CHB. He needs a lock down FB. Hopefully this Dean guy is good. IMO this will lead to a bit of shuffling, maybe Q plays defensive winger…. And Ginnivan gets squeezed out.
Having depth, going into finals is fantastic!
Ginnivan 'gets squeezed out!" You're a hard marker! He got 18 possessions and spent a lot of time under a crush of players, some of whom were deliberately trying to do him damage, including one guy who he had just helped up off the ground. He missed some chances and slotted only one of his attempts, but J Daicos also kicked 3 behinds. He did OK.

Tend to agree about Moore needing to be released from manning an opponent. He is not great one on one. He too often played from behind and was free kicked for interference or gave up marks. I didn't think he had a good game. However, it's a bit of a shame when you have to use a 200 cm defender as an intercept player when what is needed is a lock down defender. I did not see much of Howe. Maybe conditions did not suit him.

Live at the ground Moore clearly touched the footy again before the goal line.
I don't think it should have mattered. I would have thought it'd be adjudicated the same way as deliberate out of bounds and that wouldn't have been called deliberate.

I believe the rule is that you kick it through, especially from outside 9, it's an automatic deliberate, as we saw with Sidebottom not all that long ago. Doesn't matter if it's a deliberate kick or an accidental half volley.

Yes he went and touched it on the goal line but that would've only helped him if he was under pressure (if the GWS player was racing him for the ball and was anywhere inside the goal square). Unfortunately the GWS player gave up the chase so Moore essentially rushed the ball over without all that much pressure.

I guess there was some doubt at the time whether he touched it before the line (he definitely did with the benefit of replay) and whether the GWS player was actually in the square (I think he may have been from memory, only just?)

There's probably enough doubt either way to pay it either way to be honest, but you'd be absolutely stiff to lose a game because of any 50/50 call going against you.

Huh?

I don't get the controversy on this one, even as a Collingwood supporter who frequently complains about the umpriring.

It's one of the most black and white rules we have.

You can't rush a behind outside the goal square. It's pretty simple. Had GWS done the same thing down the other end we would have been screaming for deliberate

Fly confirmed in his presser that our players are now instructed to take the full 30 after we weren’t doing it against Geelong and subsequently were overrun.

I wouldn't have been screaming as I didn't know the law. But surely it has to be deemed deliberate. Otherwise a fist in a marking contest at the top of a square could be pinged or an errant pass to a teammate? I saw a Carlton bloke accidentally kick a behind for the opposition from about 30 metres away the other week. It wasn't free kicked.
