Curious to know if you guys think that Betts is actually a good coach and by coach. I'm not actually convinced of his ability to teach someone how to play a certain position. He was at the club for a couple of years which should have been plenty of time for some of our current smalls to learn from him but from the outside looking in it seems as though they havent really been able to get a whole lot from him. He is somewhat of a Mark Williams mk 2

Where I see his value is getting the most out of wayward/homesick players, especially the indigenous boys. Look at Yarran, Jeffy, Stengle with and without Betts. That in itself is worth its weight in gold, but kinda question whether he is best suited in an off field role instead that has him heavily involved with the playing group but doesnt form part of the soft cap.
Reckon H would love Eddie to teach all of the forwards how to get in the way of opposition backs.

Reckon Lil Durds, Mots, Owies, Honey, Fish, Cuners would all love to add another level to their game under the guidance of Eddie. Not just the homesick. At least some of Stengles form would be down to Eddie. The other parts would be a better system, which we are now building.

Look what he has done with Stengle this year. Scrapheap to AA. Would take that development/ change of output with any one of our small fwds if nothing else

Hire him as a player welfare liaison (outside the cap).

And if he 'accidentally' walks into the middle of a training session and stumbles into a forwards drill....

“Eddie, what drill are we doing today?”

Eddie Betts: “I brought a video of the drill to show everyone”

“Now, I want you all to perfect that before you can go home today.“

Jesse Motlop: ”I don’t think that’s possible”.

Matthew Owies: “Totally agree.”

Corey Durdin: “Nice goal but c’mon.”

Josh Honey: * Gives it a try *

Eddie Betts: “What are you doing, Josh?”

Jack Martin: * Slowly walks to the defenders to join in their drills *

Charlie Curnow: “Why would I try to kick a goal from there. It doesn’t make any sense.”

Eddie Betts: “Yes, you to Charlie.”

Harry McKay: “Are we really doing this?”

Eddie Betts: “… Before you go home today.”

I'd just be happy if Eddie taught Charlie and Harry to take set shot drop punts that went straight.

Whilst I agree those two need to definitely ingrain that critical skill in their skill set, I’m curious to know how many of Eddie’s goals actually came from set shots - something tells me the vast majority of his goals were genuine forward crumbing goals and the sublime impossible goals

the talk on acres is now being mentioned by twomey and beveridge on their show and healy on 3aw brought it up aslo so must have a little bit...after the recontracting and trades.
But you have to wonder if they've had any info from their own sources, or are just regurgitating the Hagdorn rumour, which is likely rubbish given his reputation.

Do we actually have salary cap issues or is that just bullshit talk

I would think we are ok re salary cap to cover what we have on our list and room for future raises. I would think we arent in the market any more for players from other clubs who would demand big dollars to get them over. More lower end players and trying to find a diamond in the rough.

but then again, i would have a clue - just a guess.

there's a very fine line between fine and a squeeze.
The squeeze comes from back ending deals and also emerging players needing increased deals.

In other words given the current year is within the cap, it can only get worse if you need more in future than current.

Conversely front ended deals basically mean you avoid a squeeze.

Pretty sure Martin's contract for example was HEAVILY front loaded to the point where it's probably down to a more average wage (since a rumour thread I thought it was 3 Mil over 5 years, 1st year alone was a third of the money and 2.1 had been paid with 2 year left, mea in 450k next year and after for exanple)

2.1 was paid in the first 2 years, he's on approx 300k for the next 2.

that was initially correct but during 2020 all players had to take a percentage of the year based pay cut and i remember because his wage was distorted by the massive front end he came out of it rather badly and his contract was apparently renegotiated - that's all public domain at the time, no idea how it worked out.

edit

some back info here: Blues star Martin grateful despite ‘massive’ financial hit

I think they made it the percentage cut from 2020 became that percentage of the average annual wage over the contract, not the specific amount that year

Lachie Fogarty: "Hey guys, can I have a go?"

Jack Newnes: "Chuck your Freo jumpers on boys, I've got this".

Mitch McGovern and Lewis Young: "Hey, um, Arrow told us to come down here, what are we doing?"

Lachie Fogarty: "Guys, I'm still here, can anyone hear me?"

Tom De Koning: "Is there some way I can incorporate a jump into this?"

Jack Silvagni: "This seems like a forward drill, you guys know I'm a ruckman now, yeah?"

David Cuningham: "Easy as, watch this.... rip....goddammit."

Lachie Fogarty: "Guys....?"

If we bring in Blake Acres, trade out Paddy Dow, and just bring in recruits from the National Draft, i would be very content that with that.
Jesse Motlop this year has proven you cannot gave too much quality/top tier talent

I am not interested really in selly's stop gap solutions like a Bruest or Gunston type, I honestly don't think we can win a flag in the next two years, I just want for us to bring in and develop some medium to long term solution players.

I am not content or happy just for us to make us play/qualify for finals, I want us to have at least a 5-10 year flag window, so no recruiting anyone over 26 years of age for next season (well if I had any say in it)

I favour organic/development from within mostly, that's how Richmond and Melbourne built their flag squads.

Might keep this, will be a great reference point

Whilst a sign of desperate times, that must be one of carltons worst value contracts ever. And Im still annoyed about the Daisy Thomas debacle

Daisy Thomas contract was a nightmare on so many levels.

We could have kept Betts
We cancelled out Betts compo
He was never going to be fit for his first year, so we were effectively paying him $2.5M over three years
His output was never close to what we were paying him

I never hated Daisy, but I hated the contract.

He gave us reasonable output by the end, but the damage was already done.
