Word on the street (I promise this is not just me wishfully thinking) is that Eddie wanted to stick around at Carlton this year in a support/coaching role but we couldn't fit him in the soft cap. With the increase in available dollarbucks next year he's keen to return.

I love it that despite him working for the Cats, he is outwardly supportive and is still a full on supporter every time he talks about us. It’s good to see.

I wonder how Eddie would have gone this year if we'd kept him on as a rookie. Even at his age, he may have been the difference in a few games.

MEB that’s great if it turns out…but I would find it a strange sideways move if it does pan out for us

He’s in one of the most stable systems in the game and was brought over to basically mentor Stengel who he played with in SA

Also if I’m Carlton WTF you couldn’t find 200k for Eddie to be a specialist forwards coach…could have taken the pressure off Hansen

All the coaches are on reduced % of their salary (not that their salary is anything to sneeze at), but if anything they probably should be paid their normal contracted salary first before the adding more to the coaching staff

Eddie was cooked so I’m not sure he had much to contribute but if we’d kept him in a coaching capacity I reckon we might have got Stengle.
Even then he still managed to kick 27 goals last yr, more than any of our non talls this year.

Was cooked by his previous standards but ~25 goals from a small forward wouldn't have gone amiss this year.

10+ games for Motlop and 20+ for durdin is better than having eddie kick 25 goals

Probably a good point I'd agree with that.

Might've preferred him to Owies, though. His pressure was very good in the first 10 rds but aside from that I think Eddie would've provided more. Or at least as much.

Going to be a bit of a wet blanket here but after doing our best 22 in the other thread I really don't think we need to trade for anyone. Maybe Acres if Freo don't want him, I've watched a bit of him this year and he could be a good alternative to O'Brien on the wing. All in all we should hit the draft hard.

Probably no money left after sacking Teauge. Doesn’t his pay out figure go into the soft cap tax?

Playing Betts who couldn't chase and Murphy who couldn't tackle was a big part of the lack of forward pressure last year and why the defence was under so much pressure.

Curious to know if you guys think that Betts is actually a good coach and by coach. I'm not actually convinced of his ability to teach someone how to play a certain position. He was at the club for a couple of years which should have been plenty of time for some of our current smalls to learn from him but from the outside looking in it seems as though they havent really been able to get a whole lot from him. He is somewhat of a Mark Williams mk 2

Where I see his value is getting the most out of wayward/homesick players, especially the indigenous boys. Look at Yarran, Jeffy, Stengle with and without Betts. That in itself is worth its weight in gold, but kinda question whether he is best suited in an off field role instead that has him heavily involved with the playing group but doesnt form part of the soft cap.

Hire him as a player welfare liaison (outside the cap).

And if he 'accidentally' walks into the middle of a training session and stumbles into a forwards drill....

With our injury history. Can you do up a best 30 and let me know if you think the same?

Surely we don't go through that again next year. This is my team from the best 22 thread

Backs: Newman Weitering Marchbank
CHB: Docherty Young Saad
C: O'brien Cripps Walsh
CHF: Jsos Curnow Martin
FF: Durdin McKay Motlop
R: TDK, Hewitt, Cerra
Int: Kennedy, Williams, Fisher, McGovern
Emerg: Setterfield, Kemp, Stocker, Pittonett

Add: Dow, Cuningham, Stocker, Mirkov, Cottrell (he could replace O'Brien), Carrol

I mean who do we trade in? Id love Grundy but fat chance that is happening keeping an eye on our salary cap. Hopper maybe but who does he replace in the midfield? Taranto would get in in the best 22 but again we cant afford him, Ian Hill hasn't shown any better than our current small forwards. The pieces are there, its all mental now, 2022 needs to burn them over the pre season and we come out firing round one.

I was pretty much one of the only people on this forum to say we should look at Stengle
Maybe we did? No-one here would know to be honest.

Do we actually have salary cap issues or is that just bullshit talk
Every club has salary cap issues to be fair. How the cap is managed is the important part.
