Media: ESSENDON IS A CLUB IN TURMOIL, DISASTER SURROUNDS THEM, WHAT A DISGRACE

Essendon fans: How good is beer tho
yeah, but we're 15 years ahead of the media.
stands to reason we'd be bored by the topic by now.

Oh, and Moon Dog needs a mention.
Less for their concept beers, but their lager, IPA, stouts and porters are really good. And the Abbotsford joint is great. Can even take your dog.

I keep Old Speckled Hen in the fridge. It’s an English ale I discovered 23 years ago in The Turf Tavern, a 12th century pub hidden in a nook in Oxford. Was very happy to realise that Dan Murphys had imported bottles recently. Highly recommended although it was much better on tap.
If you get into the CBD at all, the Sherlock Holmes has speckled hen on tap. Used to anyway and it was a big deal so they probably still do. I too discovered it about 20 years ago, strangely a pub in Canberra used to have it on tap

Do you think this is an independent panel and a proper process? The narrative has already been set by the President before they were put together.

Perhaps not so thorough or independent ...probably worth asking the question - why would he do say that? Who decided that's what we need?...was it Barham unilaterally? Seems like a big call from the new president to rule out half the field - including potentially the next Alistair Clarkson. Who else may have influenced that direction? And who put this panel together?

I also wonder how the panel will work. Do they sign off on a single candidate or do the board sit in on the final round of interviews (perhaps with the panel chair.and a couple of others) and the whole panel is more for the preliminary rounds etc.

All that and Lewis could also disagree and Hird still gets up of course. There not a massive field if experienced AFL coaches to chooe from after all. It won't need to be a unanimous decision.

All.easily manipulated if the club wants that IMO.

I cannot see a scenario where Lewis or Walls recommend Hird. Walls might not give a toss about his reputation anymore and be happy to set it up to fail, but Lewis is far too young to go burning his reputation in that way.

The club could ignore the recommendations of the panel if they really wanted, but that's a separate issue, and presumably, part of what the EY external review would be looking at given the board is specifically one of the areas they're supposed to review, along with the senior coach appointment.

If I was to take a guess at roughly the order of the process we'll see;

1. The external panel (including Lewis & Walls) will be part of the interview process for the Senior Coaching role, whereby the candidates will present to the panel, and the panel then presents their recommendations to the EFC Executive. Given that both Mahoney and Hisgrove cover the Football Department and EFC Executive levels that should cover off the clubs participation in the preliminary stages as candidates go through whatever process is needed to weed out the unsuitable candidates.
2. The EFC Executive as a whole receives a presentation from the preferred candidate or candidates.
2. The EFC Executive then makes the official call as to whether they accept the panels recommendations or not, how long a coach is appointed for, and what said coach is paid.
3. The EY review will look at this process and consider whether the executive did things appropriately as part of the review they're doing as per Lore's OP;

(1) Board effectiveness & composition, (2) a review of leadership, operations and culture including the footy department, (3) the senior coach appointment and (4) the new CEO appointment.

4. The EY review is presented to the club, and then presumably made available in some form to the members, making commentary as to the four areas above.

There's plenty of scope for the EFC executive to ignore the recommendation of the external coaching panel, or to try to manoeuvre around the EY review, but we won't know this until the process is pretty much complete. If Hird is appointed Head Coach my guess is that it's almost definitely not because the panel that includes Walls and Lewis has recommended he's the best candidate, but because the EFC executive has chosen to ignore the recommendations of said panel.

Of the known candidates that haven't categorically ruled themselves out (e.g. Buckley) I'd assume it'll come down to a previous head coach like Lyon or Pyke, or a highly experienced assistant like Yze.

Enjoying a case of Leffe Brune at the moment, Belgian beer, bit of toffee/vanilla notes but not sickly sweet. Had it on tap a few years ago in Brussels and been hooked on it ever since :yum:

Similar experience, had kronenbourg 1664 a few times when I was in France back in 2015 and has been the go-to ever since

Thank you. I’ll tuck that little tidbit away for sure.

Coppers should be had out of a glass.

The beers are too dense to realise their potential unpoured in a bottle.

Perfectly drinkable but not as good.
I don't think ive ever had Coopers in a bottle. seems natural to just pour into a class.

Coopers stout is quite good too.

Yep.

Have to say though of everything they've tried since nailing the bejesus out of Pale, Sparkling, Dark, Stout and Vintage they haven't gotten a beer to the same standard since.

Neither XPA or Session Ale or whatever blue is called now are well balanced.

There is a funny labelled, maybe 'Australian Pale' that came in 4 packs as cans which is extremely good, Coopers standard but I've not seen it recently.

not a session or XPA fan anyway.

speaking of beers, does anyone know what happened to Cricketers Arms? I liked their lager.

What do you reckon of the Mild? (Orange label)

For a mid strength I reckon it’s hard to beat, and you can drink them all day.

Over the last few years for obvious reasons supply chain issues (particularly from Europe/UK) has made it very difficult to get those kinds of beers into Australia in kegs reliably, at the same price they used to, and in good condition. Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watsons have both had to move towards more local offerings to fill their taps instead, as have most venues that have a similar beer focus unfortunately. This stuff may have started trickling back into the country now but last I was in at SH (about 6 months ago) the tap lineup was pretty lacking in those UK options.

Wifey has banned me from coopers red.

Yeah, I've banned myself, it tastes too good for something at around 6%.
Gives hangovers the stuff of legends, that stuff.

It’s beautiful but the sugar and high alcohol content don’t come without consequences.
