Well it doesn't make sense if we had Phillipou at no.2 on our draft list.

Say we had someone else, still reckon Phillipou and Clark > Tsatsas or Wardlow
I think we would have had Sheezel as the one we wanted.

I'm really happy with how it ended up. With the new coaching group let's hope we see a fresh Clark and he re-signs soon. It will be disappointing if he leaves at the end of the year, but most of the guys that put him on the trade table are gone.

StKilda let it be known that Clark was gettable if the right deal could be done, we wanted 2 picks in the top 10-12 in this years draft

Starvo#4 put it in the pm group very early that Clark was gettable and on mainboard he said many many times that Clark would only go if it was a super deal for us

Brady rawlings himself confirmed what we had told them was acceptable according to gags.

It was gross.
It was anything but a super deal for us- it was clark for a few spots upgrade on our first round pick.

That's the problem.
What he wanted for a contracted clark was terrible.

As for bowes, the job of a list manager is to get a seat at the table.
The fact that he couldn't get us a seat at the table with bowes, when the hawks, bombers and blues could... doesn't exactly scream 'I'm amazing at my job'.

The fact that Clark is still at St Kilda suggests the opposite - the proposed deal can't have been as bad for as you suggest otherwise North would have jumped at it.

Either that or North thought Clark wasn't worth what the Saints were offering in which case Gallagher was trying to get overs for Clark.

No it wasn't. It was Clark and nine for three and a second with some pick swaps, North didn't like it and only wanted Clark and 9 for 3 or it was off. It was off.
Even with a second, it was anything but a good deal in my opinion. Thankfully it was knocked on the head.
What Joffa has said is correct.

The media only reported the initial deal. Clark + 9 for 3.

The deal we wanted involved a second back and favourable pick swaps for us.

The deal north wanted had no second and favourable pick swaps for them.

We were then planning to move into the first round by trading multiple seconds. Probably for a teens pick if I was guessing.
Phillipou being ranked at #2 on our entire draft board is just a rumour from this board.

Twomey has reported multiple times we were fine with whichever of Tsatas, Phillipou or McKenzie was available at our pick but that ranking was with the knowledge of who was already going to be off the board by Essendon's pick.
We really like Tsatas and he was the one we were always trying to move up for.

Ignore Phillipous potential. Which is what has the fan base excited - because they are imagining our own version of Bont.

Tsatas numbers were exciting our recruiters and Coach.

The fact he was injured had us believing he would have been taken in the top 3 if he had played a full season.

One of our coaches in a video, I am pretty sure it was Lyon told Phillipou that if we had the number one pick we would of still taken him with that pick.

Could be the truth, also could of been a really smart comment to a young man who expressed that they believed they were the best player in the draft.

IMO if we did have pick 3. Playing it safe I would of taken Wardlaw. Phillipou is a very exciting prospect. I am not draft expert though.

North were in damage control after fans were melting about Horne-Francis compo and their star coach signing was not even certain to be their coach. Trading JHF compo for a guy who might or might not be a star and Geelong picking up a similar player but receiving a high FRDP for nothing, made HC look like a shitter deal as well.

For once luck was on our side. Gags was the architect of a plan that was meant to have a whole lot of excess players who we would trade at high value. He talked up trading Josh Bruce out at top dollar then folded. He was another that was better than some of our past list managers but still not top shelf. Hopefully this time we get it right.

Tsatas is real boom bust IMO, either he ends up a rocket powered Andrew Gaff or he's an Aaron Fiora/ Jarred Poleck type. ARR has spooked me on him, glad we missed him at this stage. Wardlaw looks like the one that will be the star from this draft IMO. Looks like a Petracca/Oliver type.

Ultimately doesn’t matter now does it?

Phillipou is doing all the right things and has the Roo/BJ work 24/7 on your craft type of mentality.

Which is unique to our list

Agree with mowman, great to see one of the lifebloods of the forum back. Welcome to 2023 stav.
Looking forward to this season more than in any for the past decade.

I think you’ll find it’s SOS if we fail in luring Cripps from Port.

I don't know if the story about being on our list as no.2 is apocryphal or not but if Lyon did say that to Phillipou, I reckon it is good psychology.
This kid is confidence plus, his ego would be dented by having nine players selected in front of him. Tell him we think he is top two, he has said he wants to be the best of his draft, right there is that extra incentive.

Windy wants to be #1 midfield bull!
Phillipou wants to be the best player in the league.

Wants the glory. The name in lights. Etc etc.

He is baby figjam at the minute.

Goes home for Christmas break and runs everyday. Doing gym sessions etc.

he has his sights set in a different stratosphere and that’s more to do with his personality etc.

But it is unique to this list.

Windy probably wants to be the #1 mid. You won’t hear him saying a word about it and talking himself up.

He is the Lenny of this group.

Both are needed. But Mattaes is unique to our list both physically and mentally.

I think it was fantastic management of a young kid.

Ross told Pou we would have picked him at #1

how can we get it right when only SOS does not have a current job. it is unlikly at this stage of the year, that the Saints can pick someone who will walk out of their club to ours.

SOS looks a lot better in hindsight than he did at the time. Carlton have a very good list. That said he was list manager so didn't pick the players.

Two Coleman medalists, a brownlow medalist and another who finished third, one of the best key defenders in the league and ridiculous midfield depth. He’s had some stuff ups like all recruiters do but if we had all of that I’d be over the moon.

The Dow (3) and O’Brien (10) picks hurt him, along with the Live trade for Stocker during the draft. That’s 3 first round picks potentially torched.

But he also had some big wins.

I’m not thrilled about the idea of get him back though.

You’re not going to get them all right but Cripps, McKay, Curnow, Walsh and Weitering as first round picks all nailed. Just because you’ve got a lot of first rounders doesn’t mean you’ll nail the picks, just look at our record. I don’t think he’d be a saviour I just don’t think he’s as bad as what he’s made out to be.

Also didn’t recruit players, just did the list management. Sold Brice Gibbs for overs, paid too much for Stocker. Bit of hit and miss.
