Hot Topic Michael Voss - Coaching in 2026. Should he remain beyond that?

We’re not choosing to play ultra defensive games, the opposition are.

Fans are right - if we could play free flowing footy Charlie and Harry would kick a bag of goals each and we’d win most games. If it’s slow and ultra defensive we can barely score. So teams want to make games against Carlton slow and ultra defensive.

The team doesn’t have the foot skills to combat opposition flooding, and we’re not winning clean centre clearances to get easy goals in before flooding can happen.
Not sure I would go to the lengths of saying that we would win most games. Although I agree with your overall sentiment. Playing fast footy definitely gives us a higher percentage chance of winning than what we are doing right now.

To me it would appear the guy/girl to fix the problems at Carlton that have existed for 2 odd decades hasn't been born yet.

That is entirely possible.

I still say give Voss to the bye to turn things around.

If we give him the rest of the year playing like this, it will be a form of torture for everyone involved. Would it be for a longer term benefit? Who knows.

I mean Melbourne only won 5 games in 2019 and looked similarly dreadful to what we do now, but they did make a prelim a year before.

Clutching at straws comparing our current predicament with dimma/tiggies before they’re run of success.

If no club sacked coaches would they all go on to win 3 flags?

The question for the people wanting to give Voss more time to prove himself……what progress are you seeing with the current run of losses that gives you some hope?

I’m seeing detioration not progress. So what are we waiting for?

This is the thing, should every coach get 3 years minimum? Essendon got rid of rutten, I don’t think it’s destroyed the club or they have had to begin again.

The rutten example is probably the most comparable to ours, except rutten actually got Essendon to a finals appearance, Voss didn’t.

In saying all that, give vossy another 2 weeks and see how we all feel then.

Agree Voss should remain in place as Head Coach until the bye, if after next two games we see slight , but palpable improvements, allow him to coach the next 11 games and then review status.

Geez, that's generous.

Well he’s already had the last 2 months and it’s gotten worse. I thought after the brisbane game he needed at least 1 win before the bye, didn’t seem unrealistic, though apparently that is just mean to expect that much now.

I mean if we lose the next 2, that’s 7 losses in a row, 9 losses in 10.

I think the rest of the season (forget about finals it's not going to happen, this playing group simply hasn't got the ticker to go on an extended winning streak) should be about putting all players on notice, and see which players want to work hard enough/want to be at the club next year, I doubt the club will make a call on Voss before the end of the season anyway. There should honestly be more pressure on the players IMHO.

If we continue to lose games, replacing our head Coach and undergoing an independent & thorough review of footy department and management, would be the expect due diligence in poorly operation structure.

With or without Voss the playing group is going to be put under more pressure and scrutiny, as they can’t escape this regardless of Voss staying or going.

This is the 3rd coach they have failed under, so as a playing group they have failed and they can blame as many external factors as they want, they plainly haven’t delivered.

Our performance level in 2023 is untenable by any standard, our situation is unique & corrosive must be rectify asap , we’re imploding, irrespective of the last 2 decades of misery weary supporters have had to endure.

I personally am at this point now that we have been bad for so long, another poor on field season is not the end of the world, and in fact probably gives us an opportunity for a much needed overhaul of the list.

Sacking the coach to me, seems like another quick fix option to me, when I think it seems like the playing group is becoming a negative influence on each other and needs to be broken up over the next couple of years no matter who is coaching us.

It's quite conceivable things will get worse on field for us before they get better (even if we sack Voss)

It will depend on what everyone’s tipping point is, but as I’ve said we will see how everyone’s emotion levels are coming into the bye with a further 2 weeks of matches.

That is for everyone, fans, players, coaches, board etc.

The club might decide they just need to ride it out for the year, and the Cripps led mutiny can do what they like, they aren’t getting their way this time, and if they want to play in a shit football team, that’s on them.

It will make the rest of the season rather miserable viewing, but hey we have been here before.

Since 2004 only one coach with senior coaching experience at another club has coached a team to a flag. Food for thought..

(my research has been known to be shady in the past so no offence taken if someone wants to fact check).

Does anyone else think that part of our current culture problem and why we fire coaches so often and go through so much turnover of players and or off field personnel is that we have this (imo naive and arrogant belief that we should be challenging for the flag every year or thereabouts)

I feel like this comes down from the board and power brokers on the side too.

Is there anything with the club and board coming out and lessening expectations (saying we are going through another transitional period) and we have to do some more work to do before we start talking about playing finals ?

It's also arguable that our playing group have felt weighed down by such pressure to perform to levels that I think (from what we have seen) is beyond them (challenging for a flag etc).

l don't believe Voss will be sacked before the end of the season, he will given the remainder of the season, to make the necessary adjustments to the game plan etc and we evaluate at season end.

If significant improvement does not occur he will be under pressure.
