Letter from the President: Brand research project

President Dave Barham provides an update on the club's brand research project.
By essendonfc.com.au - 1 hr ago

To all our Fans and Members,

The Essendon Football Club has a proud history as one of the oldest clubs in the AFL and we have a strong recognisable brand.

We are conducting a preliminary research project which centres around the Essendon brand and its elements.

The research project is in its early phase. Members and supporters have been and will continue to be canvassed as part of this process, in addition to the engagement of multiple Essendon Football Club stakeholders.

We have a proud history of more than 150 years and a deep connection to our members and supporters. This is and will always be respected and embraced.

There is no immediate action to change the club logo or any elements of the club brand. This is a longer-term project with significant work to be completed.

We proudly recognise that our future legacy begins with our proud history.

We will always be called the Bombers.

- Dave Barham

Tigers are man eaters.
Lions are man eaters.
Dockers are unionist campaigners.
Magpies cause eye injuries.
Saints offend due to their religious nature.

Etc etc

Hopefully it's just a different type of war plane logo.

Yeah I do. But movies aren't real, thankfully.

I wouldn't celebrate it if it happened in the real world, even if Jason Statham did manage to whip his shirt off, slide around in oil and kick out people's kneecaps.

Never said they were. Club logos, like movies, aren't real. But what they represent is.

By enjoying said material then you are enjoying the message of the protagonist using said technology in the context of self-defense/getting over their adversaries.

Therefore, you are, in the same vein as heralding a club logo, also heralding the concept behind said movies through your participation in enjoying them.

Case in point, hypocrisy.

You don't know why I enjoy films or what message I'm taking out of it.

Demons can also offend !
The sun can cause cancer!!
yes!! and my 70 year old mum also just send me a telegram to say that the Giants upset short people!!
this is great stuff!

I guess the perception of warplanes changes a bit when there are graphic images of the destruction and suffering that they've caused in Ukraine, rather than being the aggressor with all the associated propaganda (in the 40s, 70s, 00s) and floods of romanticised war hero pilot movies being shoved down your throat.

Probably wouldn't like cannons, big cats and glorified seagulls so much if they were actively hunting us or our friends down either.

Happy to change the logo regardless, old and blood stained as it is, even if it was another plane. Given we're on airport property, it makes sense, and I don't think they're changing the club song?

I have never seen a mock up of a replacement logo that I actually liked though.

Perhaps a stylised version of a De Havilland Mosquito from WWII, an old club might as well have a historically inspired logo. Give it a red sash.

Or an actual mosquito made to look like either a pilot or stylised as a diving/"flying up" plane shape...

The perception of warplanes???

Everyone knows what they do, dogs probably kill more people a year, should we change the name of the bulldogs?

Fighter jets are cool, just see how popular Top Gun is.

Well, your perception is clearly influenced by the romanticised war hero pilot movies I mentioned..... 🤔

Personally I prefer Flyboys. They had a couple of real life lions as their mascots! Better yet, they named them Whiskey and Soda 🤣

I think alcohol probably kills more people than mosquitoes and warplanes combined 🤔

so… did this thread go about the way you expected?
yeah. me and kong against the world.

but kong's a good one so pretty ok with that.

kong and I have posted about this before (Kong much much much much more extensively than I). i quoted a post from Kong in which they say "I'm happy to stop posting in this thread until the next opportunity in a year or two" for a reason you know.

It's a tool of death. We're not talking planes, jets or weather balloons. the bomber's job is to **** shit up. like...that's what it is. So all these comparisons to animals and mythical creatures to man-made killing machines as some kind of gotcha is so much weirder than just being "yeah I'm ok with the logo and name" which is a perfectly valid opinion to have (just like, I hope, people are able to accept that someone having the opinion that they're not ok with the logo is also a perfectly valid opinion). Like...no-one's gonna drop a napalm bomb and kill you for that opinion, it's fine. Last time this discussion was had I had to make a post pointing out that Demons are, in fact, not actually real which I hope did not come as a shock to anyone.

I can deal with us not being a big deal in Ukraine.

On the home front, I reckon magpies are 11 billion times more dangerous than any plane I've ever encountered. Collingwood's social media team will be hearing from me.

For sure. I disagree, but I respect your POV and it gave me something to think about.

I don’t give a crap if they change the logo or not, or what’s on it, as long as it is easy on the eye.

I doubt they’re considering changing the club mascot. Not even worth thinking about unless it’s actually on the cards.

If the logo is offensive, then Bombers has to go as well. The song would also have to be changed. I can't believe people are OK for us to go through such an extensive rebranding like we're some fledgling expansion club.

We need to at least keep the planes/jets theme if we're updating. I like that we're one of the only clubs with branding/identity that's actually relevant to our location rather than a generic name or random animal.

And please don't incorporate that ugly monogram.

I still think it's pretty weird that we completely branded away from the '97 plane for our 150th then reverted back to it this year as if nothing happened.
Feel like the current logo isn't actually great, or even iconic, it's just that it's stuck around for so long that it feels part and parcel.
I thought they'd certainly have changed it after it served as the lone press backdrop logo for all the drug saga pressers. Guess it shows how proud the club is determined to be.
Personally it's the upside down triangular shape that I hope we keep in the logo - the slightly anthropomorphised plane is whatever. Personally I prefer the more mascot-ized Bomber Shop one.

Surely the club thinking people are offended by jet planes is some clickbait bs? That's not even 'woke' it's just bizarre.
Especially since Essendon doesn't really lean into military branding at all - in fact this is literally the first time I've ever considered it - I just always associate our club identity with aviation and Essendon Airport/Tullamarine.
If there is a shred of truth to this I'd imagine 'offended' probably isn't the right word for what the club is concerned about as much as bombships and missiles being 'not marketable'.
