Na . I thought he was poor. I mean he's at every contest so he's going to get some of the ball but geez ,stop giving it to the opposition.

He had six score involvements which for how he plays surprised me so I feel like he definitely provided his fair share of value. Collingwood did score five goals from centre bounces which is probably the biggest thing but that’s hardly just on Big O. He’s a much better stoppage ruck than centre bounce ruck.

Don’t want to be accused of tooting my own horn but did think that the pies wouldn’t tag him. Which to me is crazy given the impact it has.

After our first two goals they had Mitchell run with him but he broke it easily. They don’t really have any midfielder who is proficient at it (which doesn’t usually affect them since they’ve dominated the way they have been playing.

He actually did have an impact when he came into the game. I think whether he comes into the 22 will depend partly on Ah Chee and McCarthy's situations. I'd still be a little uncomfortable starting Neale, Dunkley and Lyons in the centre square all at once, remembering that next time we play Collingwood they will likely be stronger in there, and Melbourne and Port are considerably more potent in this regard.
When Lyons came on it was clear that his work around the ball was making a big difference. I was at the game and it was also great watching him organise his teammates. When the pressure was on he tackled definitively, set up a goal with his strong foot skills, took heat off Dunkley and Neale and allowed us the luxury of playing McCluggage and Bailey in their true positions. I really like the way Fagan was playing him as a high half forward. Lyons looked deadly at forward half stoppages and probably should have kicked the goal when he got on the end of a beautiful tap out in the third quarter. Lyons is a gun footballer. He didn’t look slow and if he is not selected in our best 22, he should always be SUB. Come finals, his presence and coolness are exactly what we will need.

Agree. What's with the Oscar hate?

He comfortably won the hit outs, had 16 possies and laid 5 tackles.

Thought he was very good myself.
Except he didn’t win the hit outs (which is the most overrated stat in football) and Cox dominated him in the centre bounces.

He gets caught behind in most boundary throw ins and doesn’t break even at a contests

His disposals sat at 50% which is actually up on his season average.

Re Oscar,

He was good last night at the ruck contests and his contested possession numbers were great. Dunkley had 15 and then Neale and McInerney with 13 and then McCluggage and Coleman with 9.

One area where McInerney was a little off was in presenting and marking down the line as we transitioned out of defence. It was noticeable, especially in the first half that he wasn’t impacting marking contests on the wing.

That said, there really are no grounds for being critical about McInerney’s game. Watching live, he covered a lot of ground and tried his heart out. I was talking to him at a club footy clinic for kids a few years ago and he said that his marking around the ground is a success measure for him at the club. Clunks a few more marks than he did last night come finals and everyone will call him an underrated superstar.

One of those on today at The Brunswick Oval this morning....get your lad down there to help keep our goal kicking sharp. ;)

That has to be our finals team. If everything goes according to plan we should have 2 x one week spells in the next 6 weeks to rest up players.

I wanted him sub during the week and I’d keep Lyons there now. He’s not going to break the game open (we don’t use our sub in that way) but he also doesn’t need any time to adapt to the speed of the game when he comes on.

Just sets up a great weekend when you win a huge Friday night game like that.
Counters the Cowboys shitting the bed on Thursday, but then I'm fully used to that over the years.

Love and admire the O but surely he can be coached to improve his boundary throw-in technique....appears so slow and always behind....frustrates me to death.

Other things that were evident from watching the game live last night.

- When we are transitioning the ball out of defence, we really want the ball in Lester’s hands. 100% Disposal Efficiency last night and unlike a few around him, he doesn’t panic.

- We used the corridor beautifully and while he can be a bit frustrating at times, Zorko’s kicking is still elite and he opens teams up with aggressive field kicking. Having Zorko fit for the finals is VITAL.

- Wilmot panics. He and McKenna also had what looked like a heated exchange at one stage.

- McKenna did some great things last night, particularly in terms of his hard running and supporting teammates. That said, it is heart in the mouth stuff when he has the ball as he is prone to the odd ‘brain fart’.

- Our forward set up was elite last night. Daniher, Hipwood, Cameron and Rayner were great.

- Coleman was dynamic. He was running really well both ways and took some superb grabs.

- Payne had a really poor game. His lack of physical presence was really noticeable.

- McCluggage had a great game. Some of his corridor and delivery inside 50 work was impressive.

- Neale and Dunkley worked their arses off all game.

- Dev Robertson was fantastic, particularly in terms of the little things, like getting a hand in to put the ball in front of Cameron for a goal and giving 100% at every contest.

- Ah Chee is a very very smart footballer.

Just reading Magpie pages a few of them think we (brions lol) r monties to make the gf if we secure the top 2 with 2×Gabba finals. Mitchell getting bashed for being so slow and some minor disappointment in Fly for his inexperience. "Malthouse would have done this and that".

We were saying half way through the second quarter that he'd hardly touched the ball but he really stood up in big moments after half time and kicked some great goals.

Really liked his game . 2 or 3 years ago he would've dropped his head but now has a lot more confidence that his turn will come and just keeps persevering.
Hippy owned flog Maynard in the 2nd half

A lot of the talk on the Demons and Port boards is about avoiding having to play a final at the Gabba, especially in the first week

I was disappointed with the crowd. It would be good for us if our Collingwood games became an event.

Need a Matthews and Sheedy like tete a tete during the week.

Hippy tried his best in the first half, which I commented on at half time, and the game opened up for him later. He was like the proverbial junk yard dog.

What about Charlie's spoil deep in defence and he did lay a sheppard for Hippy to goal?

Cox killed the Big O when he came on and at the game there was discussion about Fort being the sub. Have a fresh ruckman certainly was a plus for the Pies.

Our forwards won the game: Charlie 4 Daniher 3 and Hipwood 3. If they kick 10 goals each week we will never lose.
Charlie's spoil was sensational... May not have shown up well on TV but he came from a mile away. Showed exactly the same speed he shows at the other end of the ground. Even the pie fans were saying "what's he doing there!".

And yes he blocked for Hippy to run into goal which I loved, especially when he was originally calling for the ball. Really selfless act.

I’ve always found Pies supporters to be (relatively) quite fair, especially when compared to Essendon supporters - and that goes back decades.
The worst fans for mine have always been St Kilda fans. Altho yes Essendon fans aren't far off.

I think we played better against Melbourne in the 2nd & 3rd quarters of that game but in terms of overall 4 quarter effort, yep for sure.

Sucks that a lot of Lions fans were shoved up the top tonight, wish this had of been at the MCG. The Lions chant would have roared loud.

Watching on the tv, I was surprised to hear the lions chant quite early in the match. It was my understanding that this chant comes out after the fat lady has sung!
