My wish would be for picks, but it’s the least likely you’d think.

Agreed, unlikely. It is interesting that we are putting it on the table.

In the PR world of the AFL, the term 'compensation pick' already exists. They absolutely could sell it to the footy world.

Knowing the AFL, they’ll actually push our pick down because we should have finished higher!

i dont think the umpire should lose his job. while obviously it really sucks right now and probably will for a few weeks, standing him down for the rest of the season is fine by me. it's a monumental **** up, but it's still a mistake. the afl should be ensuring that it doesnt happen again. he would feel like absolute shit but sacking him just sends the wrong message to umpires at a time where it is hard to get umpires.

Its a hard game to umpire, there's mistakes every game. Thing that bothers me as how many times has this conversation come up that the games are not equipped well enough to make these decisions!

The AFL threw the umpire under the bus. Sydney gave them no chance to review. Hogwash. It was a failure of process and the field umpires could have easily stopped play and taken it back to the goal square had arc decided to review it. The AFLs refusal to admitt its own failure is just again, yet another signature amateur ad-hoc decision.

What world do you live in where you expect no lasting consequences when you make a mistake that is worth millions of dollars due to your own arrogance in disregarding a failsafe put in place for the very instance you've just experienced?

This guy can go work at Aldi for all I care, his feelings are the last thing I will think about.

Some people are just not cut out for certain professions. Remember, it's not the first time he has been in a situation similar to this. (another decision that decided a game).

An
Financial for a start.

We’ve lost money and potentially the commercial benefits from increased exposure and membership momentum from a finals run

To compensate for that lost exposure and momentum: better fixturing

To compensate for lost revenue: cold, hard cash
And pick 1 in the national draft..then we are all good and can move on

Luckily for goal umpires they can review!

We should demand they rig it so that Walker wins the Coalman and Dawson gets AA captain.

No one here thinks for a second those requests are beneath the AFL
On reflection the AFL has decided to remove all goals against West Coast. TEX wins the Coleman by 1 goal.

Why do people think you can't be held accountable if something is a 'mistake'?

I don't know what the flowchart is to figure out if a review is needed but it really needs to be a lot closer to "Are you 100% a goal was scored/not scored?" and if the answer is no, go to the review.

We know this umpire wasn't 100% sure because what he thought happened didn't actually happen.

If you are guessing based on something you thought you heard, send it to the arc.

Review each game, wrong decisions not being sent to the arc? So you're guessing? Warning and then career over.

I'm not saying umpires have to get it right 100% of the time, I'm saying they should have to be 100% sure of their decision.

The goal of the AFL should be to get the technology to the point where the umpires aren't needed, and then have them on the goal line for tradition, to wave the flags and for rare occasions when the technology fails. Maybe they can pay frees for holding and pushing and whatever else, how many must they see and not be able to do anything about.

Sure, it would cost a lot more, but they spend so much money on other stuff that's not really needed to put on a game of football, so oh well.

Why do we care about those things?

I'm an oppo supporter but a footy fan first and I just wanted to say that I and like the majority of the footy public stand with you guys on this BS call and it SHOULD be overturned and the ladder adjusted. Absolutely disgraceful. Made me sick to the stomach to see the footage.

If the goal umpire seeked a goal review instead of going off on his own, he wouldn’t get any backlash of his decision. Even it was a behind, we would’ve had time to restructure with a minute to go where anything could’ve happened.

I don’t condone any abuse of him and I hope he will be okay.
