Lobb for Howard seems like a dumb move on our end.

Would not happen unless we either get a good draft pick, or a good mid, who would be the main prize. ie Lobb the "steak knives".

Howard is a first 22 FB. And young enough to be part of our next flag tilt.

Lobb will be 31 next year, and no guarantee to be first 22.

Howard would only be traded if it helps us gain a player, or good draft pick, for our flag tilt.

Bumped into McCartney (GWS GM) in the lounge before my flight home this morning.
Had a chat about footy, brought up Jack Steele and he said the news he's been hearing recently is we're trying to get rid of him...
Watch this space on the Steele rumours I guess lmao

Why wouldn't they?
OOC Tim Kelly cost West Coast 2 first round picks.

OOC is not Free Agent.
Because Bell gave away Acres for a future 3rd rounder & we would all agree on current form & how he played last year he was worth more, now Henry has played 43 out of a possible 90 games & wasn't even rated until he started getting some possesions played the first 7 in the WAFL & only got a game because Aish got concussed.

I think he's worth a 2nd rounder only & he's OOC so they have some say but not all.

I agree with that. I just don't think we'll get anything of sufficient trade value to add anything to get that great pick/trade.

Obviously I am not on the list management team.

But the way I understand it, it is not that they want a particular pick for a particular draftee, but rather that they want a pool of draft pics, both this year and next, so that we have multiple shots at finding such a player.

I'd take Newcombe or Day!

Wouldn't today be their Mad Monday? Weird day for exit meetings!
I think it’s later in the week.

RTB and SOS are making sure the formalities are done asap.

We have a lot of players with their futures up in the air

Apparently he is meeting with Sydney and other clubs.

I would say Billings is out the door , Howard could well be as well and Clark , Gresham will be let go at the right price - this would give us the opportunity to deal with clubs who have interest in the players.
All 4 of these players are starting to look as only depth for us.

If he's crap, i don't want him in the first place.
If he's good , then their claim for more value is legit.

Acres is 27 this year. Makes a difference.

Will anyone want Billings though?

Bring out the coin and entice a topline midfielder.

Coin alone rarely attracts a topline player. FA was brought in believing that FA stars would leave for cashed up bottom teams. Miggins St Kilda showed Goddard and Dal the door thinking we would later get a "Big Fish" FA, which as we know never happened.

"Big Fish" Players swap clubs not just for cash (they will be well paid regardless), but other reasons. Chasing a flag, big crowds, family reunion/returning to home state or lifestyle etc.

A big reason why Cameron joined the Cats was lifestyle, and that he loves to fish.

Hill's partner wanting to return home, which was very near Moorabbin, was very helpful for us.

"Big Fish" walk into best 22's.

"Little Fish" will change clubs for opportunity to get into the best 22. eg Dow.

I don't know why Henry chose us, but I am glad he did.

The advantage with Howard, as I think you have posted is that several clubs may want him and also be willing to pay something decent for him, and that we can cover his loss to some extent till hopefully Van Ess comes on enough.

That Howard is contracted till the end of 2024 puts us in a good position as long as another club really wants him enough to pay a good trade price.

Howard is probably our best shot of getting a good draft pic, or possibly player.

This is shaping to be the biggest off season of all on here......taking me back to the Kelly Jelly days.

Everything is getting thrown out there
And we ended up with a broken down hanners :'(

What I think we get out of picking up a player like Grundy is flexibility around Marshall.

Tom Campbell is not going to make AFL level. Max Heath is at least one, probably 2 years away. Right now, Marshall goes down and we are in all sorts. Just don't see how we do not have a slight need for a ruckman.

Grundy ticks a lot of boxes. Can do a job in the ruck, is handy around the ground, frees up Marshall. The guy is 2 times All Oz and still young. Not saying we should give away the farm but not likely to cost picks, just a matter of how many dollars.
Grundy hasn't been much chop for 3 years and the experiment with Gawn more than confirmed that sharing ruck duties isn't his go.

He's off to Port Adelaide anyway so there isn't much point discussing it.

Okay. Let’s say we trade Steele.

Find a club with the currency and genuine trade that works.

Not a lot out there.

I said Melbourne.
You forgot to put the "North" before Melbourne.

Steele would fit in perfectly with their young mids.

Pick 3 (McKay compo) + something back from us?

Marshall has absolutely shown that he plays elite footy when he is the #1 ruck. He is not and never has been a forward and this year should have settled that debate. He went to another level without Ryder.

You can either choose an elite tap ruckman who struggles to impact the contest in the midfield, or an elite midfield contested player who struggles a bit in the hitouts. The only player in the comp to do both at elite level is Max Gawn.

We have to recognise what Marshall is - the best 'follower' in the game who is an average to slightly above average tap-ruckman. There is no point trying to over-correct the part of the game that he isn't as good at (hitouts) by spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on another player which then forces Marshall out of the contest for 50% of the game. The definition of robbing Peter to pay Paul.

What we need is to improve the midfield around Marshall and continue to develop young/back-up ruckmen.

Much better off spending our time and salary cap elsewhere in my view.
Probably one of the best posts I've seen regarding our ruck situation.
