Review 2023 National Draft Review Thread II [McKercher, Z.Duursma, Goad, W.Dawson, Hardeman, Maley]

There's 22 spots in an AFL side and Duursma could conceivably fit into about 14 of them.

There's enough smoke that recruiters have him as their number four prospect behind Reid, McKercher, and Walter. Twomey, who rarely misses in regard to recruiter consensus at the top end this late in the year, had Duursma third behind Reid and Walter.

Just saying.

Still watto and Curtin for me if we stay at 2 and 3

Was mentioned clarko is a big watto fan also thankfully
Welcome back Nostra - things have moved quickly since you went missing.

The Watto/Curtin quinella is probably the rank outside combination of players in the top 8 - 100 to 1 at the moment.

if it gets up then the Nostra name is well deserved!

It’s the smart play

Both game changers and fills holes in small forward and KPD

Sorry, I’m being lazy and can’t be bothered searching, but why is GC trading away alot of their early picks?
you can't give a top 10 pick when salary dumping if you dont have one

Tarryn Thomas was suspended half the season and George Wardlaw wasn't ready to play for most of the year.

And Will Phillips' first season back from glandular fever.

All three guys SHOULD be stalwarts in our midfield next year.
A lot of “ifs”.

Cal gets fed info from Brady and other list bosses. No coincidence that Zane went to #3 on Cals talent order immediately after Brady’s Gettable interview. Around this time last year he was saying we’d likely take Sheezel (regardless of him ranking Tsatas higher in his rankings). Like last year, you can pretty much bank who we are taking at 2 and 3 based on what Cal suggests over the coming weeks.

'We'll see', said the zen master.

(That said, if Brady Rawlings is that transparent that he straight up tells a reporter our draft strategy over a month before the draft, and it's accurate, then he should be fired).

I'm not sure Brady or any list manager telling a draft nerd reporter like Twomey where we see rankings at the top end is selling state secrets stuff.

Sure, if we have some play afoot to snare a kid in the 30s and it blows up, that's bad.

But saying yeah jeez he has had a great last six weeks, you'd have to rank him in thst top echelon now isn't what I'd call giving away our draft strategy

I'd trade next year's F1 for concrete evidence on what Phillips and Powell will become over the next few years.

I think Sanders will likely be the best pure mid of the 3, sunk cost be damned.

I was gutted when we couldn't pre-list / match bids on him, and if we spend a high pick or trade up for him i'll breathe a huge sigh of relief.

I love Jy, and I heap praise on both Phillips and Powelly at every opportunity, but if our smallest starting midfielder is the maniac Wardlaw, I think we're hard to beat.

Are we more likely to cover passing on a Duursma type with Thomas/Sheezel/Zurhaar/Ford/George/Stevo/Harvey; than we are a Sanders type with Phillips/Powell/Simpkin to do the dirty work with LDU/Wardlaw?

McKercher is quick but if we play him as an in and under mid with our current list as it is, he's another not large player in the centre square. If he goes to HB or the wing it's a different story and I can see the merits.

Reid is a wildcard type we have no match for.

Reid/Sanders for my dream draft on patently limited knowledge.

I don't think we'll be doing that - next year will be time to put the 2024 First and the 2025 F1 on the table for a marquee player to top off the list build

Sorry, I’m being lazy and can’t be bothered searching, but why is GC trading away alot of their early picks?

Because they have 3 first round academy players this year who they can just “match” bids on with their abundance of later picks. Jed Walter (top 2), Ethan Read (top 10) and Jake Rogers (top 12ish) will all get to GC via their academy

By trading the picks it also allowed them to improve their draft hand next year also.

Isn’t there a rule surrounding number of picks having to equal the number of list spots?

These rules need changing. Should have to pay overs and be required to (partially) match with a pick that's within 10 positions of the bid and in the same round as it. Same should happen for F/s. You want the player(s) that badly? Need to trade a lot to get them. Shit is a complete joke at the moment, nevermind the priority and compensation pick systems. Every possibility that if neither existed north would be running with Daicos, Ashcroft and Walter after the last three drafts. That's your rebuild right there.

Because of our need for talls and roll players if another club offers us a pick between 5-8 along with a F1 for pick 3 we should jump all over that.

Take McKercher/Sanders/Curtin with pick 3.

Then take Watson/Caddy or O’Sullivan by dropping back a few places.
We should listen to offers on pick 3 but we'd be banking on other teams not taking them early which is a slight risk. The trade up from two late 1sts is probably the better method but teams might not want to budge until draft night when certain players are gone so we might have to make a call before that. I'd slide from 3 to 6 and 11 from the Dees. Should be one of Caddy or O'Sullivan at 6 and Murphy/Leake/Wilson at 11 which would be pretty appealing if we passed on one of McKercher/Duursma/Watson/Curtin/Sanders.

Can we do this to take advantage of this years draft given it is unlikely that there will be much strength past pick 30 in next years draft:

Current Picks: 2,3,15,17,18,57.

Pick Swap 1:

In: Pick 8 (Geelong), F3
Out: Pick 15,18, 57

Then we stack 2,3,8,18 - unlikely to use 57 anyway

Pick Swap 2:

In: Pick 6 (Mel)
Out: 15,18,57
Then we stack 2,3,6,17

Both unlikely, and we come up with points deficet in both, but i think we should keep 2 and 3 and not sell the house for 1.

Pick Swap 3:

In: 14 (adel)
Out: 17, 57, F4

Move up the order. We can rookie someone instead of using 57.
