We oddly seem to draft ALOT of kids who are heavily injury prone…

I wonder if there is something going on with our fitness and conditioning that is overloading or under loading the kids early on?? It seems to be too often a trend with us… just off memory recently the injury prone draftees have been:

Kroeger, Willis, Conway, clark, Freddy Krueger, cooper stephens,Shannon neale…

You can go back further for players like cockatoo lang brown etc…
It's probably a function of how late our picks are generally. Just one of the risks to think about about its probably harder to teach a late pick to play footy than take a kid with an injury but can play and just rehab him.

A lot of those guys had injuries before we drafted them. It seems our recruiters probably saw them as 'draft bargains' because they were/are talented and only slid down the draft order due to injury. We've made the mistake far too many times, I'd think we should've valued durability by now.

Want durability? Just draft a few more steeplechasers😅

Its worth the gamble when you put it into perspective

Jeremy Sharp indirectly helped us recruit Jezza Cameron.

We got pick 11 (became pick 15) which was bundled up with 2 other late R1 picks, 18 and 25, (one of those from T.Kelly deal) in return for Jezza and 2 picks in the low 30s.

Thanks Jezza for Jezza.

Incidentally, the picks we gave to GWS became Connor Stone, Ryan Angwin and Brayden Cook (Adelaide). And in return we traded the 2 x 30’s picks to Bulldogs for 25 - Mitch Knevitt.

Selwood

Jeremy Sharp delisted from Suns. I know people have raised him here before. He didn't get a lot of opportunity at the Suns and could be a free hit for us rather than pick 100 in the draft. But I guess he is more likely to go back to WA?

Freo.

We have a minimum of five senior list spots to fill now. As it stands, we'd have to use 8, 25, 76, 87 and 94 unless we upgrade a rookie or two.

76 87 and 94 will end up in the late 50s.

But yeah its really either 8 25 53 58 and 60 or upgrade a rookie (dempsey) or take a dfa and dont use 60.

He's almost certainly going to Freo but would be hilarious if he came to us

I just wonder if there was an analytics person in that room pulling their hair out.

Part of thats where we pick though. When you have early picks you can guys who are top end talent and durable. With later picks its often either you take guys with moderate talent and a few flaws (who can be role players) or guys who project as more A grade talent but have slid due to injury. They have more risk but a higher ceiling. At times we should have gone the sager choices but its harder when you pick late.

We might also keep a spot open for mid-season draft or might even SSP !

We could although we dont seem to love the MSD as much as some clubs. Given the injury issues with conway id elevate dempsey and id use that rookie spot to get some rucks to train over summer and sign one as SSP. Or we could do the dfa route and use a senior spot on a re tread ruck.

Judd, Selwood (Joel), Varcoe, Cerra great examples of players with ability selected with significant injuries, who have made it big time.
Being injured at U19 level is not a guarantee they are injury prone.
It is just sheer bad luck

Hardie was very average in the VFL. Very. Genuinely surprised he was kept. Kroeger on the other hand looked promising the 4 mins he played in two years. Looked like he had an AFL size to him.

Oh well the club see them everyday and very rarely let good ones go of their own choice.

Unfortunately for FK, the best ability is still availablity.

After a full pre-season in an AFL program, hopefully MH can perform to the standard he did in the SANFL. If he can do that, we might have a player on our hands, and at the very least he should be handy depth.

I remember a key point being made on his dedication to get on an AFL list, and how he had clear work to do on his fitness to get there. Wells also said similar when we drafted him.

Suggests to me that while he's a mature age player, theres still some potential there now that he's in a truly professional environment. He could surprise, and is worth the punt IMO.

The fact they extended him says there is alot off field and something on field they like in him.. He comes across as someone who will be the first player to arrive and the last player to leave the training track.

Hardie, In games I saw at GMHBA started well. Then he was moved forward and his impact dropped right off. It would be interesting to see quarter by quarter stats if they exist.
If fitness worries were the cause of these moves then it makes sense to give him a chance to improve that aspect.

Pretty convinced we will trade down in this draft having read the predicted outcome of picks preceding our first. I think we’d hoped that Sanders might fall to us initially but that’s now unlikely with the Dogs wanting to replace their ageing inside midfield group. If Curtin or Caddy fell it would make us stop and think I would think but the likes of Twomey expect both to go a bit earlier.

The trade that appears most likely is with Adelaide. I’m hoping that our picks 8 and 25 will be traded for 10, 14 and 20 with a F3 going back to them.

Would allow us to still I think pick up some handy types and address a few holes in our list.

I’d be targeting Leake with pick 10. Just looks a Wells type. Versatile, tough and would bring some good footskills. Has a bit of toe too. Can pretty much play back, forward or in the middle.

Taken me a little while to really warm to this guy but I’d be taking Charlie Edwards with 14. Think there’s still a lot of development in him. He’s a great size for a mid, can win his own footy and has very good endurance. Kicking is good but can improve. Good overhead. Think he would compliment our young midfield brigade.

Pick 20 for me is a toss up between ZZ and Hastie. Having taken 2 mid sized players with the first 2 I’d probably lean to ZZ. He’s pretty raw but a competitive beast and has a terrific athletic profile. See him most likely as a KPD moving forward to accompany SDK.

If he’s gone no qualms in taking Hastie. Have liked this kid since I first saw him. Local kid who would bring some good line breaking speed out of defence. Good decision maker.

With one of our last picks I’m taking Philactides. We are in desperate need of a tough small defender. This kid is it. Would represent good value at this part of the draft.

Agree 100% with your trade suggestion but differ with some of your selections that I think Wells will go

10. Tholstrup
14. Hastie
20. Stevens

Like Tholstrup. Very comfortable taking him.

Stevens I’m only looking at late in the draft. Probably taken earlier though.

If we’re trading back I’m taking 3x high risk, high reward types and hoping one pays off. Blokes like Collard, Murphy, Delean.
