Ask and we'll try our best to assist - so here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

As normal, would like to acknowledge & thank Lore for creating this, keeping it up to date and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

2024 Free Agency Period

The AFL introduced free agency at the end of the 2012 season, giving players another vehicle where they can transfer from one club to another. Free agency is a common form of player movement in major football and sporting codes around the world.

Free Agency Opens: Friday October 4 at 9.00am
Free Agency Closes: Friday October 11 at 5.00pm

Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period

Trade Period Opens: Monday October 7 at 9.00am
Trade Period Closes: Wednesday October 16 at 7.30pm

All for scrapping it...but I say that as a member of a successful club who is usually on the wrong end of these moves.

Trying to be objective, it's one of several distortions that affect the draft. I think someone mentioned a few pages back that at most, any compo picks should be end-of-round at best - that's something I could get behind.

Clubs would fight more to hold on to players and end up overpaying

It's big if he doesn't attend the B&F. He can force the trade to happen if he really wants it. Can literally leave melbourne no choice but to do a deal if he is prepared to go scorched earth. He can make being at melbourne untenable. IMO it already is, at a good club. Not a dumpster fire with woeful "leadership" like MFC.

No but I did see Danger riding the Tiltawhirl with Zac Butters and Harley Reid so make of that what you will 🤔😂
Not gonna lie i got a bit worried there as i read it as “i did see Danger riding Zac Butters” 😳

Whilst nothing is real until there is an official announcement one way or the other... I still absolutely expect this to happen or be hotly negotiated at worst.

Don't take much from the Dees apparently saying they won't entertain it, the wording has left the door ajar enough. It was just to calm the storm before the BnF... will ramp up again rapidly in the next 48 hours I would think
first lesson when you enter the AFL is how to keep a straight face when you lie

Fagan when asked about Joe retiring following GF
response - "First l have heard of it"

then only days later he says joe told him after losing GF that he was going to retire but will stay for one more year.

No news on whether Oliver will rock up tonight. But I'm told as recently as this morning, that his management team are adamant the player wants out and they are supporting the move.

This has all the makings of a classic stand-off. I don't think Mackie or Hocking will be the first to blink - but the way Melbourne are going they'll announce tonight that he's a required player - and by lunchtime tomorrow there'll be a courier van delivering Oliver and his locker contents to GMHBA in a nicely gift wrapped box.

Is it Geelong only …or is he done with Melb so completely that he would listen to StKilda or whoever who probably got more to offer Melbourne..

Because the way this usually works is the player picks his destination and then it either can or cant get done.

I can understand if he wants to stay away to keep out of the spotlight and be alone with his own thoughts. It's been a whirlwind week for him and he might just want to have a reset.

Wouldn't necessarily read into it that he's out the door.

Only thing that annoys me about the whole thing is that Mack/Wells etc have wasted half a week focussed on it when they could have used that time looking at other targets/progressing other deals. Not to mention wasting Stewys and Stanley's time with farm tours etc. Kinda half happy if it doesn't go ahead, I mean I see how getting CO could be (COULD BE) a fantastic result but could also be a disaster. But then I'm not a huge risk taker, I take it pretty personally dropping $20 on the pokies let alone 1.3 mil on a potential culture/pay structure killer.
Time that you enjoyed wasting is not wasted time

I don't think it's a waste if the effort meant that Clayton declares he wants to go to the Cats.

It means other players will file that away as evidence that Geelong is a good destination.
It's also a good indication to the dogs that we're willing to walk away from trades so we're serious about the limits on what we offer for Smith

Agree that this is far from over… Melb trying to calm the storm before the B&F… they have to address the elephant in the room and if they have no good news (in terms of an attractive offer) what else can they do?
They have stuffed this up (not surprising when their leadership has been Roffey, Pert, Goodwin…. Sheesh 🙄)
But come Monday…. Game on.

I personally like the idea of getting rid of compensation but i know others don't.

Was an idea earlier that i thought could be good as well. Compensation picks are at the end of each round but depending on the contract they may be multiple picks.

E.g Lynch from GCS to Richmond would get 19 and 20 instead of 3.

I’m not sure it’s quite that straightforward.
If a 27 year old isn't adult enough to stand up and answer a few questions then I dont want him anywhere near us.

This is completely different to the Smith scenario.
As far as we know Oliver did not request a trade at his exit meeting.
Smith Did.

Smith didn't even play a game this year. Oliver did.
Smith has nominated Geelong. Oliver has not.

As others have stated, it wasn’t Oliver that initiated this latest bunfight. If he feels uncomfortable being effectively centre stage amongst over 1000 people all staring at him, giving him their 2 cents worth, having a crack at him after a few sherbets then I don’t blame him.

He can sort things out next week one way or another. And can make a public statement then. He doesn’t need to hang himself out to dry tonight.

I think we should do away with it.

If you can't create an environment where players want to stay, why should you be compensated for it?

But failing that, yeah, all compo picks are end of Round 1 at most

Yes he does.
1 night can destroy a reputation instantly. I repeat, it's a very, very low chance that a trade is made.

Turn up. deal with it.
And if you move, then all good.

But if you dont turn up, stay, you're in deep shit.

I’m hearing Oliver isn’t going to be attending the best and fairest tonight…

Sounds like MFC are coercing Oliver to go + play happy families. Purely to save face. Management know the cluster**** has harmed the club, players are leaving, constant media leaks, members are angry + they’re at Mach 10 damage control. Oliver + his manager know MFC are using him as a pawn in this fiasco.

Perhaps it’s an ultimatum? Oliver could agree to play their game on condition they trade with Geelong ???
