I read one of John Marsden's books titled The Year My Life Broke a few years ago, which was about a kid moving to this shithole town and playing cricket. Was catered for kids and was a great read when I was younger despite having a bit of swearing in it. Might have to check it out again.

What advice did he give that you still think about regularly if you dont mind me asking?

It was basically saying rules are there for a reason, but you've gotta use common sense when that reason no longer applies. He used an example of someone standing at an empty set of lights with no cars in sight waiting for the crossing light to turn from red to green.

It sounds a bit silly, but it took me some time to break out of that habit after having it drilled into me you never cross if the crossing light is red. I think about it almost every time I am waiting to cross the road and remind myself that life is so much more than following arbitrary rules.

That's the reason Paul Hogan hasn't been considered funny for nearly forty years. There's only so many jokes you can make about sheilas and p***ters before someone asks if you can make granddad stop it.
