Training 2025 Pre-season

I like the look of our reserves side.
We have genuine players in every position.

Did not have this over the last few years.
Genuine depth ? If we could reach a GF with our best 22 in top shape, we'd have a real chance.

A nice boost would be Chad re-signing early this season on a five year deal. Then, covered in glory in his late twenties and (maybe) thinking of settling down, he can take a $15m end of career six year deal with whichever west oz team is closest to a premiership.

KPD depth is Francis, Snell, Edwards and Andrew.
Defender depth is Paton and Bice. Both experienced.
Small defender in Leidler.

Mids depth is Adams, Sheldrick, Cleary. Experienced to somewhat. Corey and Mitchell. Kirk does not inspire me.

Ruck is Ladhams and Green. Depending upon whether we go a bit smaller in the forwards we may see Amartey and McLean.

Forwards. Wicks, Hanily, Datolli and Bowman as the smalls and medium. Buller and Hamling as talls does not excite I admit.

However, I still think we have too many mids. Some like Warner could be moved forward. Wicks moved back. Sheldrick and Cleary forward. Lloyd anywhere from back to wing. Florent can play back or mid.

Yes depending upon where we play players under the new coach I reckon there is plenty of depth there.

I think we still need someone who can fill Reid's very handy 2022 role (except his injuries). He was a solid 2nd tall forward, a very good 2nd ruck and good enough when he went down back to shore up defence (at end of quarter). He was also our most reliable marking target for pressured kicks from defence. He almost always marked or brought the ball to ground.

McLean did well in ruck and forward last year but he didn't have the defensive nous or the marking prowess.

Options: McCartin could potentially do all the Reid things but the ruck. Ladhams? I recall he sometimes panicked in defence. What about Amartey? Can Francis or Buller ruck? I'd like to know we have these needs covered. Last year the kick from defence was turned over far too frequently so it came straight back.

Thoughts?

Tomorrow's community camps:

N.B. The North Shore event, originally planned for Killara Oval has been shifted to Gore Hill in St Leonards due to weather.

Bat and Ball oval, how long did they take to name that

about the same amount of time it took to name that snake thats coloured brown, or the the black snake with a red belly, or the mountains that have snow on them, or the really big sandy desert, or the .............
it'd be unaustralian to name it anything else

hmmm.. what the f**k is a potato scallop?

Never enough mids
We didn't pick up one mid last year.

We will probably go all Academy this year depending upon Warner. If Warner stays we will probably only take Academy players with 3 highly rated players.

If we lose Warner then we will prioritize a mid in the draft I reckon.

I think Sheldrick will be in the mix for centre bounces sooner rather than later.
I predict Heeney and Warner forward more than last year. Smaller forward line replacing a tall.
I predict Mills into centre bounces as well.

Looking forward to the preseason matches.

Never enough mids
Mills, Heeney, Warner, Rowbottom, Jordan, Sheldrick, Cleary, Adams, Florent, Mitchell & Roberts. Papley Gulden, McInerney part time.

Rucks: Grundy, Ladhams, Green

Part time: McLean & Amartey

I understand your sentiment but with all of those rucks being basically extra mids I think things look good there.

I said never enough

My understanding is that the club has its last intra-club match simulation on Friday (14th), with the scratch match to follow the following Friday.

To those who’ve gone along to watch these hit-outs, at what time do they generally get underway?

When I was there a couple of weeks ago, the sim started around 10am

Thanks for the info. That sounds quite civilised. When I lived about an hour’s walk - non traffic impeded since it was mostly walking through Queens and Centennial Parks, I used to pop along to watch training a few times each pre-season. But then I moved, and while I can still get there in not much more than an hour, that depends on traffic (road and CBD foot traffic) so I hate doing it at the height of the morning rush.

I wonder when we'll get an update on Logan's ankle? Was meeting with the surgeon on Monday
But they said he was doing some drills on the sidelines , surely if was really bad he wouldn't be doing that . Might be just lingering and not real bad , but not improving

Being a key forward and someone the club expects to be at the club for the next 10 years , it’s smart for them to be super caution with him . He’s a big boy and you don’t want ankle injuries lingering in his career

Grundy is 32 in 2026 and maybe Warner goes, Rampe might be in his last year now then you have Adams 33 in 2026.

Not to mention in 2026 guys who are still key or even our best players in 2026 are Lloyd 33 , Heeney 30, Papley 30, Melican 30 and even Mills 29.

A lot of our best 22 don't have much time left to win, maybe 2025 is the last real chance for this generation.

I like our youth coming through, but if we don't win in 25 maybe 26 then it might be a while longer.

Would be a shame for Heeney to play his whole career and give us 0 flags, Rampe , guys we love .

But I can see a world where Grundy is basically done next year and we lose a key part of feeding the midfield .

All fair points , but i'll say again that the club had set themselves for 24/25 and 22 wasn't expected
