Given Atkins didn't start playing midfield until age 27 i reckon young Jyhe is a couple of steps ahead of him
Age-wise yes, he is ahead of him and has many years to improve (i'm sure he will).

That doesn't mean he ever get and/or goes past the level of footy Atkins has played when at his best.

I think he will be thereabouts... If he goes past what Atkins has produced at his best for a number of seasons then i'll happily take it.

I was hoping he could be a Viney level player (good but no star)... but I have lowered my standards to Atkins.

I'm going to keep hoping on the Viney level if it's all the same. Hope costs nothing

Personally I still don't see it (yet) as far as Knevitt in AFL stoppages. I'm happy for them to give him a crack and prove himself though.

So far there seems like more potential as a workhorse wingman. These things can change over time. For now he needs to play wherever makes him most comfortable.

Think this is reading it perfectly. Given exposure in the middle this week, but i think they will have a more outside role for him. wing is perfect imo, he'll provide a marking option on the way out, is a good runner to get back and help out too. i have him on one wing and dempsey on the other as our mainstays. hopefully he just keeps improving and building confidence. may very well end up an inside mid but still seems a bit out of his depth there for mine

That's not my memory of it - I certainly didn't shitcan Zuthrie, and I don't think I was alone in that. He just looked like an AFL footballer in a Little Athletics body.
I had no faith in Zuthrie. Thought he tried but didn't think he had any attribute good enough to overcome his size. He wasn't tall enough to play on key forwards, wasn't quick enough to play on small, wasn't good enough by foot to be a rebounding defender and then on top of it all was built like a twig. Even if he got bigger, I thought at best he will be a solid VFL player.

Turns out that he just isn't bad at anything. He's tall enough, quick enough, skilled enough, smart enough and now strong enough to be a pretty darn good footballer.

Yeah agree. Think he deserves some time so we can see. (I'm still annoyed he got dropped after the dogs game 2 years ago).
Whilst he gets some clearances in the VFL, for a big bodied mid, I still think he gets beaten at clearance a lot. Thats not to say he can't be a midfielder, it depends who else is making up the midfield.
His best attribute is his height and marking. He looks best in a contest with the ball in the air and provides a good out when the ball carriers under pressure.

Zuth always arrived with only one big asset : He sees the game better than almost every defender.

GFC took a small risk putting him on the rookie list and connections probably helped with that.

His first game of AFL v GWS in a very depleted cats team showed how he was physically not ready but also showed he knew where to be and that he wasn't going to be intimidated. (Our best ever draw).

A few games later he was monstered by Roughead, and that made it very clear that he had a long road ahead. Many had doubts. The doubt for me was putting on size not his football kitbag.

Fortunately, at this time we had little depth and his place on the list was safe.

His is one of the great stories.

Forget top 10 draft picks, Zac's story is far more interesting.

Watching Zac glide around again on Monday reminded me of his start and that his biggest asset is still his ability to read the game.

Go Zac, Go Cats

Second half of last season Knevitt was very good in the VFL. Started to get his hands on the ball in close and get it out. If you watch him, he is very good in tight, gets a handball off quickly and makes good decisions in close. He also covers a lot of ground, has good pace and is good overhead. He is still a year or two away, he only turned 22 last month, so he will continue to improve and get stronger. Hopefully they do what they did on Tuesday and play him in the middle for an extended run. I reckon that once he gets comfortable with the speed and pressure he will be very good. We have a few smaller inside mids, but his size and marking ability would make him hard to match up on.

I remember Zuthrie’s TAC Cup U18 year had him named in the best players something like 13 out of 15 games. I always felt the only thing missing was size, and the only question mark was whether he could add any. Talent was never an issue.

I may stand corrected but he's played HFF in the games I've seen.
Actually - Zero Hanger has him as a forward whist AFL has him as a Forward/Midfielder :thumbsu:
Yes, he's certainly played more games as a HFF so far overall (but the end of 2024 was predominantly as a mid). But even then he's never been a marking forward. He'll probably end up as an 80/20 mid/fwd in time.

Either way, I don't want to give too much airtime to the Phillipou vs. Clark debate as it's a bit futile. But it irritates me a little when people minimise Phillipou to justify the selection of Clark (not saying you were doing that). Both are young and developing, so we won't know who will be the better player for a while. But Phillipou's last month of the season were better than anything Clark has produced so far IMO.

Apparently players can only have their own branding on feet/boots

Ridiculous really
Not really, tbh. You can't just add branded bits to the uniform.

IIRC, it wasn't all that long ago that all players on a club had the same branded boots, too. Pretty sure all of our boys were laced up with the Adidas three stripes. Then the penny dropped that boot preference is highly personal

I am going to prioritise going to all of those games so I don’t have to listen live to BT! (I am ok listening to him on replay when we win - actually enjoy him talking down Cats when I know the result!)
Happy to help you 😹
I mute Ch7 + Fox, listen to KROCK. KROCK has a widget to sync commentary with live broadcast 👏🏻

Here’s a little bit of BT to remind you that you’re mostly free from him

They should just do what the cricketers do (re bats) and slap a sponsor logo on custom made boots.

Pretty sure Kouta had is own deal with Adidas when Carlton went to Nike in the late 90s
That's when the boots were allowed to be personal supplier

As for the headband, it really should be a personal choice as it's not specifically part of a teams uniform and it doesn't affect integrity of the game as in say gloves which need specific approval.

ZG, Blitz, Stewart all have branded headbands, albeit thin straps

The AFL gets involved in things it doesn't need to.

Except you can't see the brand on the other headbands without a microscope.

No issue with it being personal choice which headband to wear, so long as it's in team colours.

This is pretty standard stuff across all the big football codes, FWIW. Players get to pick their own boots and clubs live with the fact that the manufacturer logo is writ large. But you can't wear any other large branding - on an undershirt, gloves, snood, headband, whatever.

If I were Cotton On, I'd be a bit pissed that I'd shelled out plenty to manufacture and sponsor Geelong's kit, but here's Bailey Smith with a swoosh stamped across his forehead.
