Port played Soldo rounds 1-6. Then he got hurt and came back playing 2 games before getting dropped and playing the season out in the SANFL.

He lost his spot to Jordan Sweet who the power acquired easily for pick 50 at the end of 2023 (see how is easy it is to find ruckman for cheap).

Yup. Was their #1 ruckman to start the season and got dropped. Essendon now have 5 ruckman on their list and we are likely (and unfortunately) gonna swipe one.

You asked for two examples of teams that dropped their lead ruckman last year - I provided them.

Ahhh you were asking which teams kept the ruckman they dropped last season. Well - just us.

Well only 3 teams dropped their ruckman. We are the only one going into the season with one - probably because we have two mature rucks contracted through 2025.

Yeah - Preseason don't matter. ROB has a season like 2024 - we will be just fine.

He came back okay after he was dropped. Averaged about 40 hit-outs a game. Also had Didn't he dominate All Australian English in Rd 22 earning 8 coaches votes (4 from each coach). He can still be very good. His bad is at least competitive and he responds well to when he is dropped.

Once again going into 2025 with ROB as your #1 ruckman aint bad.
So you’re ok with playing a leader of the club who is out of form until they are eventually dropped because we effectively don’t have another viable option and Strachan isn’t one.

Preseason does matter, how many times players who have had good preseasons have decent seasons?

What the preseason has shown is that ROB has consistently been beaten by a SANFL ruckman.

I agree, but I reckon the coaches know with Strachan not much chop even before he was hurt, they couldnt afford to lose ROB so early in the season.... or at all.

I can imagine they would hate being hamstrung by it.
Surely they haven’t told ROB “don’t even try to jump”. In reality though we know he can’t jump, which is a major disadvantage against a ruck who is taller and who can jump, which is what McAndrew is.

3 things have the potential to derail our season:

Nicks
Injuries
ROB and lack of rucks

I don't think he should be a leader.

Not sure he is out of form. We haven't even had a preseason game yet. He finished 2024 well and has played 84 of the last 90 crows games.

Huh?

At practice. Don't make me quote Allan Iverson.

Strachan won the club SANFL best and fairest last season.

Actually, he's won it the last three seasons.

Maybe they think he's a good backup as is. He's been the best overall ruckman in the SANFL for the last few years, and maybe they didn't feel the two games he played last year were career ending.

I'm not arguing for him - I'm just saying there's more evidence of the club rating him than not.

I think you missed my point.

They aren't going to risk our only remaining ruck in practice games.

Interesting to note McAndrew is playing tomorrow.

Harry Boyd has been the outstanding SANFL ruck and it's not close. Margarey Medal for a ruck is pretty rare.

Several years ago he was being called "best ruck outside of the AFL " (by the club).

Hopefully his insipid matches last season were from the groin injury, not a general lack of fitness.

I know you're trying to make a witty point, but enlighten me as to what that is ??
RoB has looked like he's hardly tried for the past 4 years. Pretty sure that's spenze's point.

I would disagree with that, he's tried he's just not very good.

Right now though, we cant really afford for him to get hurt.

Nope.

In the year he won the B&F he was a poor mans Rehn, I loved the way once the ball hit the ground he got his knees dirty and hunted the ball. He hasn't done that in years.

He's never been "very good" but his effort was, I'd go as far to say excellent and that has really dropped off

I reckon the effort did drop off last year but not for long. When youve got no competition for a spot that does tend to happen.

Unfortunately ROB at 80% seems to be better than Strachan at 100%.

I think dropping him was necessary for that little kick up the backside
Not sure about that, don’t think we saw Strachan at 100% last year.

What club is in a great position if they lose their #1 and #2 ruckman to injury?

Bulldogs are forced to play either Darcy or Lobb who are preferred as KPP if they lost both English/Smith before round 1. Just like we would be forced to play TT if we lost both ROB and Strachan for Rd 1.
The issue is we are in a bad position if our #1 ruckman is injured as we don't have a decent #2.

Because the Inactive List rules state that medical evidence is required proving that the injury is season-ending - and Strachan's diagnosis is nothing like season ending. They're talking about him being available around the R1-3 window, which is far from season ending.
We just need to borrow the Port doctor for a day...
