Training Pre season training

Just when you thought Hawthorn couldn’t come up with a worse jumper they outdo themselves. What a shocker tonight’s jumper is.

Almost as bad as the “Jockey” jumper they wore in pre-season back in the 90s. Remember that one? Blue diamonds over the top of the piss and shit colours. The horror………

I have named them the "Tim Tams".

Bit on a more serious note gees they push the rules boundaries. Sicily clearly pushes his opponent in the back every marking contest, they are all duckers (dropping the knees) and they are all tackle or forcibly scrag opponents without the ball.

The rules and umpiring need a serious shake up.

I think Cam McKenzie is trending to be a very solid 200-250 game player to a similar level as Dunkley/Dawson which is on the edge of the very best but not quite there. Would be rapt to have a player like him on our list. In saying that, Phillipou has the attributes to be a top 5 mid in the comp giving his ability to hit the scoreboard and embrace big moments.

That's the Clarkson blueprint, enthusiastically adopted by Mitchell, Hodge etc. Push and overstep all boundaries, squeal when caught and repeat. Its one of the reasons I absolutely loathe them, the sheer hypocrisy of everything about the "family" club when they've been thugs for decades, including to some of their teammates.

You underrate Dawson - much better player than Dunkley especially with his kicking. Well inside the top 10 mids in the comp

Mackenzie still has a long way to go because he isn’t particularly damaging with the ball. Wins contest which is good, could develop to be a Caleb Serong

Can you ladies take your almond milk, decaf latte chat to an appropriate thread please........ :laughv1:
yeah over 3 weeks before getting back to australia they already have me planning my full cream milk strategy, when visiting my 2 overweight sisters who decide low fat milk will solve all their weight issues,my vegan ex wife,my pussy whipped brother and son & my cheap father, who uses low fat crap now because he gets it for free

while i should be focused on life here in pattaya thailand, rather than fearing all those other garbage milks

He's a smooth mover. Might take longer to develop because he looks a pure midfielder, and because they bat deep he'll get less exposure for a while. Although if Worpel misses that could change.

He'd be on a path to AA this year if a humble bayside club was able to take him as an academy selection, as he'd be starting on-ball. Sadly that has been ruled out and won't return to the competition anytime soon, which at least allows a level playing field.

Remember his first quarter on debut. Absolutely laced Luke Breust and all I could think was we'd been ruled out of getting a future Brownlow medallist.

Hey Sainters, I have not been following the thread, but if someone could please update me on the fitness status of Sinclair and whether he has returned to training I would be very grateful. Cheers!

So no training reports?
Looks like everyone (including Josh Gabelich) decided to make it an extra long weekend.

So no training reports?
I was there sorry.

Was great to see Tauru involved in 3/4 of training, just not the full field 'contact' stuff. One play in particular caught my eye, basically showed off his closing speed and punched the ball into row F of the stand at RSEA. 10 minutes later, Cordy spoiled a contest in a similar manner but hit it 5 metres back into the corridor. Not trying to be super negative about Zaine but Alix' punch had authority and the difference was obvious! His kicking was solid, if not a little loopy. Not concerning, like, at all, just an early observation. He is super athletic, really exciting prospect.

Barrat was also training in defence. As much as I talk him up, we can't get too far ahead of ourselves, still just a kid who is showing a lot of promise. I think once or twice went to mark instead of spoil and things like that, but again, just a kid. He is usually solid overhead, moves well and likes to go long with a penetrative kick, doesn’t mean he doesnt have a great short game. Both Tauru and Barrat, with a bit of luck, will be pretty formidable down back for years to come.

Clark was a ball magnet and read the play incredibly well, his disposal by foot was erratic at best which was a shame as other aspects of his session were class. Nas on the other hand barely missed a target by foot.

Macrae just keeps on dominating, his 15-20m kicks into the F50 are a thing of beauty. He is exactly what our midfield, and forward line for that matter, needed.

Hastie is looking solid down back. He's much better overhead than I thought he was.

Ross was particularly vocal on Friday getting everyone to pause where they were highlighting the poor positioning. Arie, Hammer, McLennan and Keeler in particular are being held back by their game sense off the ball. They aren't alone though, plenty of players are running to the wrong spots. Those guys in particular weren't necessarily singled out on Friday by Ross, it's just my own personal observations over time. Gus had some particularly shocking clangers by foot, Wilson also overshot a number of passes. Arie's left peg is a thing of beauty, he's getting better at halving pack contests, one on one is still a work in progress but that boot, man that's a beautiful peg!

Higgins dominated, seemed to be everywhere up forward.

Butler not training, nor was Said - which was strange considering he seemed to be in that video warming up. Owens, Irish running laps and I think I saw Doogs do the same.

Unfortunately I saw Boxshall coming back from the rehab pool. Not sure if just sore or a minor injury, fingers crossed he is fine and just being managed.

Both Henry and Marshall completed the session but didn't seem 100% at the end of it if I must be honest. Hopefully just fitness issues and nothing more sinister. Sinclair looks fine, I'd suggest he'll play no problems in round 1 and Ro will probably play but be sore/underdone.

Carroll was out there, not as dominant as some previous match sims, still did some nice things and I'd love to see him round 1.

Garcia almost snapped his leg in two whilst kicking a good goal. Not sure who it was but it prompted a contact work doesn't mean injuries type of blast. Hugo was fine, but could've gone very badly.

If I must be absolutely brutal, neither Hammer or Keels absolutely stamped their authority on the training session as forwards. Keels did some nice things, but wished he'd made it impossible not to pick him with our injuries up front.

Stocker trained well, vocal as always and very good defensively.

It wasn't a brilliant session, they are all really hot or cold this preseason. Some sessions are vocal, up and about and we are looking a million bucks. Some sessions are just sloppy with seemingly poor understanding of their roles and poor skill execution. I guess I'm trying to say training has been inconsistent and thats what I'm fearing from the season ahead of us.

Re Taru , I really think he has superstar persona. Curnow, roo, etc. he just needs to be up forward, imo.

Thanks for that. One week to go and still no real idea of how they will set up.

Looks like Keeler and Caminiti competing for a spot fwd, no clear indication of who will be the 3rd tall defender, Marshall fit (ish), Boyd a maybe, Sinclair looks like he'll be OK.

Monday session may give a better indication.

Re Taru , I really think he has superstar persona. Curnow, roo, etc. he just needs to be up forward, imo.

Looked like a better back last year but perhaps forward craft will develop. If forward you imagine he becomes an Aaron Naughton type of high flying excitement machine.

Last year his read of the flight of the ball seemed elite. He'd run out to meet it and nothing in his path would stop him getting there. Sicily has that too. Has the Jeremy Howe aerial game too.

Ross likes a spiller and Hammer probably has that role at the moment. We might need Keeler too. Play him like Sharman as a more rangy tall forward option.

Unfortunately it sounds like we are not going to have Butler available. Perhaps need Garcia to play forward. Just a shame Collard isn't a bit closer or Henry fit.

What's up with Butler?
