Autopsy Some promising signs but Hawks too good

He put together a year of focused high end footy through his old man carking it. That took a lot. Losing parent while you come into adulthood is hard, but moving to a new city and working in really high pressure job while doing it is presumably harder.

I think you can make criticisms of someone's football without pretending you've got a psychologists assessment of them.

All you do is watch him on tv once a week and from a few hundred metres away every other month or two if you're lucky.
Yes agree, he might not be mentally weak but he is as dumb as a bag of hair.

Feeling a bit better about how last night went with more time to ruminate on it. A few of the newer guys and players that aren't locks struggled but I think it was senior players down on form or just unfit (Grundy, Paps) that really hurt us.

We know that the unfit duo, Heeney and Rowbottom have far more to offer than what they showed last night.

McCartin is still getting used to the new position, but I thought he looked promising, and 7 marks is a very good sign.

Amartey has evidently improved and was really good. Wicks flourished in his new role, Paton got better as the game went on, Jordon seems to have improved as well.

Sheldrick was disappointing but should improve with more time in the team. I've made my thoughts on Campbell's game and how I didn't think he impacted enough clear but I think we should back him in, and that he certainly could have something to offer up forward if he's able to get more of the football (even 12+ touches a game is enough for him to do a lot of damage).

Players like Florent and Hayward need to be made accountable. Hayward is crucial at his best so I think he should be backed in for a few more weeks, but Cox needs to make it clear that 5 touches from a senior player simply isn't good enough. I think Florent just needs a role change, and should be playing as a forward with maybe the occasional stint in the midfield or on a wing. That's a pretty simple adjustment if Adams is injured.

I can't see Rampe being dropped for a while yet but I think Hamling or Francis would have offered more last night.

I think for such an average performance overall, there's a lot to work with and a lot of scope for improvement. I wouldn't make any major changes next week, but if Grundy and Papley still aren't fit, they shouldn't play.

If that were the case, I'd go Francis/Hamling, Mitchell (sub) and Ladhams in for Grundy, Adams and Papley. Hayward to be instructed to try to shut down Andrews' intercept marking game. Florent spends more time forward. I'd lean towards Hamling over Francis because he could be given a defensive forward role if we're coughing up too many intercept marks - the Lions key forwards aren't particularly threatening anyway.

See how that goes, look at making bigger structural changes if we're still struggling.
I'd give Riak Andrew a game

Fair enough re: Hayward.

I think Fox on Sicily might have worked, but obviously not available and would have hopefully been put down back from the start or soon after Paton looked unlikely. Paton I thought got better, but might be suited to skinnier types. In any case, he and Wicks are it for small/med defenders until Mills, Cunners and Fox return. Not sure we should debut Leidler yet.
We have Vice. He went well in the preseason game

Yea as good as he is down back , I think the further up he ground the harder he is for teams to find matchups.

He’s not the same player he was when he came . I’d love to see him on a wing
He is playing a defensive role as a key defender and his run has dried up. To get the occasional but not so many as before. He needs to be freed up. He might be 200cm but he is not a Key Defender

Swans list is the proverbial frog on the frying pan.
Huge problems with recruitment, retention, and poor drafting over the last five years and the chickens will come home to roast.
I'm expecting some horrendous years ahead
Just so many playets who are either cooked or not good enough.
No idea how we managed to hide this for so long .

A grade defenders is the major issue imo

I think after this season we are in for some real down the bottom years

I don't think so , might hover in the lower part of the 8 , but we can trade, delist , recruit each year .

They shouldn't panic after one week.

We can’t seem to trade anymore that’s the thing besides not wanted players

No longer the destination club

One trade period ago we got Grundy and Adams via trade, can argue over the success but they were both decently rated.

It can turn quickly, who is at the Academy, can the guys we drafted come good- especially if we play them.

Like you said elsewhere a lot of the struggles may be mental here, who played anywhere near their best?.

Some shit signs this week, but they can’t panic so quickly. No point being awesome the first few weeks again then fading either I guess

This group won’t win a flag mate , they have had there chance imo. We will fall before rise.

I also wouldn’t say Adams and Grundy are high recruits , Hinkley didn’t want Grundy because of his attitude towards what was required at port and look how Adams has gone.

Adams has been a massive blunder on a 3 year deal and Grundy not looking to good on a 4 year deal

Where did Hinkley say that, got a link? I remember it being Port put a solely footy package to him, were happy to have him and we offered more about life balance . I don’t recall Hinkley saying I don’t want him because of his attitude, and I mean what does Hinkley know.

Like I said can debate the success of the deals but that off season we got players in for spots we needed, I remember you were happy with those inclusions at the time.

Time will tell, I was pretty annoyed Friday and concerned, but won’t write the next few years off after a game.

Don't know what you are talking about, look at these amazing choices.

Our first two selections from 2019 in each draft onwards

Pick 5 - Dylan Stephens
Pick 26 - Will Gould
Pick 4 - Logan McDonald
Pick 5 - Braeden Campbell
Pick 18 - Angus Sheldrick
Pick 34 - Matthew Roberts
Pick 20 - Jacob Konstanty
Pick 27 - Cooper Vickery
Pick 16 - Will Green
Pick 24 - Caiden Cleary
Pick 22 - Jesse Dattoli
Pick 26 - Ned Bowman

Now obviously it is not fair to rate some of those players as it is too soon, but right this second I think the only player on that list who, given their draft pick, has achieved what we would like is Matthew Roberts.

1 out of 12 is a terrible strike rate.

Having 2 pick 5 and a pick 4 you would like to get a superstar there with 1 of them

Bice is not a small/med defender, he's a half back.

In the same way Lloyd or Florent or Roberts are not like Cunningham or Fox.

I'm amazed that people keep thinking if you're under 187ish and play primarily in/from defensive 50 then you're all the same.

Time will tell, I was pretty annoyed Friday and concerned, but won’t write the next few years off after a game.
Absolutely.. Its one game, and the first game of the season which is always rusty.

We can’t seem to trade anymore that’s the thing
Its clearly harder in Sydney than Melbourne (Adelaide, Perth). We tried for three years to trade a key defender and ended up with Francis and Hamling as no-one else wanted them. Hawks try last year and get Battle and Barrass - watching that on Fri night gave me the shits more than watching Florent.
Destination club? perennial finalists, state of the art facilities.. so I guess the cost of living, the fact that we're not a big Vic club and the Zero 'come home factor' all play a part.
So we've had to go to the draft.. Edwards, Snell and Riak over the last few years. And drafted mature defenders (as instant depth) in Paton and Bice

Worth remembering that Brisbane did not even get in the top 8 until round 16 last year. Imagine if they threw the baby out with the bathwater in March or April.
Shush.

We're busy wailing and gnashing our teeth over the absolute rabble of a club we follow.

No time for any rational thought.

Yes, Hinkley's Port, famous for understanding what it takes to achieve success.

Agreed, Too much doom and gloom

Even with most of the side playing at 70% we were in a position to win until the Florent blunder and we could barely lay a tackle 😂

Hawks supposedly top 4

If Cox can get the players to go at 85% we will beat almost all the teams

Grundy can at least work himself into good form (has done previously) and be a very good contributor again. Adams, not so much, and when he comes back should be used as an in and under player for the reserves IMO. Playing him (unless we have a lot of injuries) isn't going to help us much unfortunately and we'd be better served getting games into Cleary, Sheldrick and any others.
